Can W2K Be Installed on SATA Drives?
by Guest W. Watson- 16 replies
That's the question in the Subject. It seems to be balking at the idea. I have a 320G Western Digital. It seems to see something less than 320G, and tells me it wants to establish a C: drive, NTFS, of about 320M, and a D: drive of about 50M. I told it to continue, and it told me some format was incompatible with W2K. I just stopped. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

STOP error while starting GameGuard
by Guest Bubbles- 2 replies

(I hope it doesn't bother if I post this here again, because I think in Games it won't be noticed) STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, <insert many numbers here>, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED <insert many more numbers here> NTOSKRNL.EXE This is the bluescreen I get if I try starting the GameGuard to play a game. I can execute the game just fine when I start it without the GameGuard but can't exactly play because the GameGuard is off. (This is a anti-cheat-programm so I need it anyway). Can someone suggest the solution of the problem I have? My PC: CPU : AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ OS : Microsoft Windows 2000 Worksta…

Switching External Modems on Win2000/Pro
by Guest Chaim Caron- 3 replies
Hello All, I want to switch external modems on my Win2000/Pro machine. Do I have to "remove" the modem using the "Add/Remove Hardware" applet in the control panel? Or is it sufficient to power down the machine and switch the modems? I may want to reinstall the original modem later. I am having a problem with PCAnywhere on a dialup and I want to see if the problem is with the modem, that's why I am switching modems. If switching modems does not fix the PCA problem, I will return the original modem. Thanks! Also: I'm not sure if I have an installation disk for the modem I'm switching in. It is an old Practical Peripherals, model PC288 LCD v.3…

How to Install W2K on a Modern System (Lessons Learned the Hard Way)
by Guest W. Watson- 0 replies
Learned from various sources including the thread I started here, "Can W2K Be Installed on SATA Drives?" Let me start with an explanation of "the Hard Way". I have a P5NSLI ASUS motherboard that supports both IDE and SATA controllers. The key word is "both". I wanted to install W2K on the STATA HD, a 320G WS SATA drive. I had some fun trying to get to a point where the OS install asked how I wanted to partition the drive. I was stumped by this window that came up in the install: ============================== 76294 MB Dis 0k on bus 0 on atapi C:NIFS(Drv1_main) 76003MB<6360MB Free D:FAT32(Drv1_extra) 290MB<237MB Free 131070MB Disk 0 at at 0? on?…

Unplug hardware
by Guest Lincmark- 0 replies
I just installed a new hard drive and cloned the old one. Now, while trying to stop a USB flash drive, the message pops up, "An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\winnt\system32\hotplug.dll" while using the remove icon; and the same message with "hdwwiz.cpl" when using "add/remove hardware" in CP. If I just remove the flash drive, I, of course, receive the "unsafe removal" message. Does anyone have any suggestions?

record dialup authentication conversation?
by Guest Gretch- 1 reply
I have a dialup connection properly configured and functional; the connection completes as desired. Is it possible to save the details of the connection conversation to a file, please? We need to examine all detailed aspects of the authentication procedure, e.g. such as: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xedc61ec1> <pcomp>] and its response, including the IP address assignment etc, so that it can be duplicated on a different OS. Thank you for your assistance, as nothing suggests itself in the Properties of the dialup connection or its components.

2nd Q: unsafe removal detection of USB device
by Guest ntolson@gmail.com- 0 replies
Hello, I'll admit my mistake first - I stupidly removed a device from a usb hub that was working fine previously - without the safe removal option - The device is an external wifi plugin on a desktop - now it refuses to work - and seemingly doesn't allow re-installing. This device - Pheenet 802.11g USB wasn't assigned a Windows digital key - but it did load up ok the first time - all the problems stem from me pulling it from the hub. Every time I re-install, all works fine for a few minutes, then an 'unsafe device removal' box appears and the wifi box and connection disappear. I have tried re-installing / fixing with the install disk / removing drivers / diff…

Using An Old External Modem With Win/2K--Driver Problem
by Guest VFP Developer- 4 replies
I would like to use my old Practical Peripherals modem with my Win2K/Pro system. The problem is that there does not seem to be a driver available. If I try to use the old driver that was from the Win/NT 4.0 days, the system warns me that the driver is not certified for Win/2K and it may not work and it may cause the entire OS to fail. Yikes. Is there any way to use this old modem with my Win2K system? Is there some sort of generic driver? Thanks. Note: I will be away from 8/16 - 8/24.

Windows 2000 -- desktop icons have disappeared
by Guest chris.peressotti@gmail.com- 4 replies

Hi. I've seen a few older posts about this (from 2001, 2003, etc.) but I'm not sure if they're relevant. When I turned on my computer this morning, everything was fine. I have not installed any new programs, run anything that I don't usually run in the course of a day, I haven't run any mystery-attachments from e-mails, etc. I went away from my computer for about 1/2 hour this afternoon and, when I returned, all of my desktop icons were gone; however, when I look at the Desktop folder under my profile, they're all there. I know that nothing happens for no reason, but I don't know what could have happened. My windows updates aren't completely automatic, s…
