Instalation of Vista 64 after download
by Guest Jalar- 3 replies
I have just downloaded Vista 64 Premium Home Edition from the Microsoft download service, having purchased it there. It comes in three sections: * boot.wim * install.wim * Vista_HomePremium_SP1_64bit_English_Download_Part1_661-01936.exe I have two questions: 1) It is saved on my PC: can I install Vista 64 from here without creating a disc as it is a huge file, altogether? (I am currently using Vista 32 Home Premium) 2) If I can install direct from my PC, which of the three above files shall I launch? Many thanks!

About a year ago In Xp 64 I had 6 Nero entries that I could not remove from Add Remove Programs. I posted it in the newsgroup, but no solution was ever found. Today I found the solution, here is the link. They were msi installers & nothing else would remove them including editing the registry. The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility did the job.{;-)))).Prior to today I had tried many many add & remove programs . http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

Hey group! I'm quite new to this ODBC and would really like it if you could clear up some of my queries...I apologize if some of the questions seem ridiculous...:))) Im trying to get my C# .NET application running on a 64 bit machine and am facing a few problems. The app makes use of an odbc connection and this is where I am getting confused and I havent been able to get any reliable sources online... What is the difference between a 32 bit odbc and a 64 bit odbc connection? Can a 64 bit Application make use of a 32 bit odbc connection? Can a 32 bit Application make use of a 64 bit ODBC connection? **Im using SQL server as the database…

This one goes to my buddy Hugh (a.k.a. "Kue") in Canada. Nero has released a new update to its burning suite. Read all about it here: http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-nero8-update.php or download the 188 megs update from here: http://ftp22.nero.com/Nero8/Nero-8.3.6.0_eng_update.exe No changelog is available yet. I wonder, will they have fixed the SideBySide errors in Event viewer? Carlos

by Guest dirtydavid- 4 replies

One of our machines has developed a disk fault, and I need to move windows from the current hard drive onto a new one. It currently takes more than an hour to boot up!. The problem is, the shop we bought the machine from never gave us the disks or the licence label, though the product is correctly registered with microsoft. We have another copy of windows xp pro, and want to remove the old hard drive and reinstall, usingthe current licence number. I can recover the 20 digit Product Identifier, but do not know where to look for the full licence number. Please help David

Sleep mode not working
by Guest Jack- 7 replies
Vista Ultimate 64x SP1 MS updates are really a pain since they seem to stall all the time and although I'm on a cable (8MB) connection it takes forever to download even a small 1 or 2MB update. Then it takes a long time for the install process to complete itself. I have 2GB of memory which is fast doing other things but when the updates start, my system really drags until it is complete.. ???? Whether it is coincidental or due to some other reason, after a recent MS Vista update occurred, my computer fails to start in the normal method after closing down using the Sleep (hibernate) option. Prior to this happening, each time I closed down using Sleep, …

Upgrading to 64-bit from 32-bit
by Guest Bullybear- 4 replies

Questions from a laypersons perspective. I'm purchasing a computer that is only available with 32-bit Vista Home Premium. If I get the upgrade for 64-bit directly from Microsoft and install it over/in place of the 32-bit version am I asking for problems. I guess that's it for now. If not convinced to keep the 32-bit, or purchase the new computer with the 64-bit version already installed, I'll be checking back for advice when I screw up the upgrade. : ) -- Bullybear ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bullybear's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?u=53034 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/s…

Backup/Dual Boot XP Home & XP Pro 64Bit
by Guest umwhat- 18 replies

Can this be done with the XP pro? I want to backup the whole single 320GB Sata harddrive because I will probably be accepted for a computer course soon. I have been looking at backup options and would like to save the work and the computer to somehow rather than reinstall all manually if reinstalling becomes necessary. -- ....scribble...scribble...scribble...

Win XP Not Recognizing DVD Drive
by Guest Joe Ezell- 19 replies
I just replaced my Lite-On LH-20A1L-06 DVD Burner drive with a Pioneer DVR-215D. The Lite-On would only work if I inserted a disk and rebooted. If I inserted a disk and tried to access the drive without rebooting the system would freeze. Also, if I changed the disk after rebooting, the system would freeze. Now, Windows will not recognize the new drive at all. BIOS recognizes the drive by name, but Windows does not even attempt to see the drive as a new device. No drive letter is applied. I have been fighting with this for some time. I tried using a PCI express SATA add-on card and the computer would not POST. The System: Windows XP (64-bit) …

Report on retromigration installations (x64 to x86)
by Guest Colin Barnhorst- 5 replies
I am not troubleshooting here so please don't rush to tell me how to fix it. I am just reporting. (I have filed appropriate bug reports with MS.) Charlie has commented once or twice about the advisability of always doing a clean install when retromigrating (my term) from x64 to x86. I ran a number of tests of this. I consider a clean install to be the deletion and recreation of the target partition followed by the installation of Windows. A Custom install does not do that. It does result in a clean installation of the operating system in cases excepting retromigrations. I used VMWare Workstation 6 to host a Vista Home Basic x64 guest installed f…

Chess Titans (can't resign) . . .
by Guest Stan Shankman- 4 replies

Greetings all, I am not sure if this is an issue related to Vista 64-bit or not. (As I do not have a 32-bit Vista box for comparison.) So here I am asking if anyone knows of this problem, or if anyone knows of a fix. I like playing Chess on Vista using Chess Titans - a game that came with the Ultimate version of Windows Vista. I started out playing at a low level, but wanted to see how strong it played, so I switch it up to the top level (level 10). As I expected, it was able to lay waist to my forces within relatively few moves. At this high level (level 10), it plays so well, and so slowly, that it makes it no fun for me to play against. So I quickl…

Was instructed to restart the system. I restarted the system and a blue screen with an error message flashed for a second and the system moved the DOS screen (for 30 seconds) that normally allows the user to move into Safe Mode, Last Good configuration, etc. Was not allowed to move the cursor with arrows and then it continuously moves to attempt to normal start-up and then returns to the same process, over and over. Please help John in Guthrie, OK

RE: Microsoft updates Jack, If you want to read a description of those updates and learn something else use this address: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=934062 This one applies to Q934062 mentioned in your example. If you want to read another KB article, just replace the 6 digits with the corresponding ones. Carlos "Jack" wrote: > I'm really getting disgusted with Microsoft's constant updates.. 64-bit Cisco VPN Client 1 2
by Guest VistaNewbie- 27 replies

I bought an HP Notebook to replace an old desktop that was running Windows XP Pro. The notebook was configured with: a.. Vista Home Premium (64-bit) SP1 b.. Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50 GHz c.. 4.00 GB RAM To my dismay, I have discovered that the VPN client that my government agency requires to connect to my office network will not install on the notebook. The client is a 32-bit program and my IT department does not provide a 64-bit client. So my new notebook was rendered useless as a computer to telework with. I configured it as a 64-bit Vista OS because HP sales told me it was needed in order to be able to use the 4 GB of RAM. With memory b…

Vista Ultimate 64 SP1 on ASUS M2A-VM with Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 2 GB memory (was 4 GB but finally had to remove 2 GB to prevent constant weird failures.) I inadvertently hit the "Sleep" button on my keyboard (I *K*N*O*W* I should have disabled it!) and had the usual problems getting the PC to awake, it did wake up but failed to install a USB Printer and also failed to install my mouse software so..... I rebooted and... had a bunch of grief, the machine just refused to boot. I got the little green indicator which would freeze, the screen went black and only power off worked. OK, BTDT before, I know how to fix it, boot into safe mode, open Device Man…

Dual Boot ??????? 1 2
by Guest MadMax75th- 37 replies

Hey, I recently added a second hard drive that had a fresh installation of XP32 installed. My first HD has XP64 installed. It only wants to boot the XP64 Drive. I was hoping to DUAL BOOT but when I go to BIOS I can't get it to let me change Drive Priority. I am supposed to use the "+"(PLUS) sign to raise or minus sign to lower priority but nothing happens! Is there a good program that I can install that will allow me to choose the HD I wish to boot to ? I have Partition Magic but it won't allow me to add a FAT32 partition on XP64, so I can add BOOT MAGIC. Thanks a lot for any help you may offer. Max PS- My XP64 is on an SATA DRIVE & the XP32 is on an IDE…

Installing Windows XP 32-bit over Windows XP 64-bit
by Guest piccolo- 8 replies

Somehow, I wound buying a Dell Precision workstation with Windows XP 64-bit installed on it only to discover that a LOT of my software is not 64-bit compatible and never will be. HP, Nikon, even Adobe don't appear to have functioning fixes for Windows XP 64-bit. So I am faced with having to buy an OEM version of Windows XP 32-bit and installing that if I want to use my existing software library. Never having installed an OS before, the prospect of installing Windows XP 32 scares me and I thought I would ask here for advice. 1. am I going to need special cables, etc. or will the thing load from the CD? 2. I presume I can get the necessary drivers eit…

I found this interesting piece of information while browsing http://www.start64.com "The Xerox Global Print Driver significantly reduces IT involvement and eliminates the need to download individual printer drivers for each product. This truly universal printer driver lets users print to virtually any printer or multifunction printer—even to those made by other manufacturers." The rest of the note and driver links can be found here: http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2390&Itemid=1 Carlos
