Freezing when running programs and other things
by Guest Rob- 3 replies

Ok... so i just installed windows vista ultimate 64 bit version and after updating it all the way, it still freezes when the computer has to process alot of data, e.g. playing a game. Installing a game is a gamble because i hope that it doesnt freeze in the middle of it. the same thing happens when i try to download big files and also when i transfer data to an external hard drive. so basically, if i run a big program or transfer a lot of data, it freezes or just restarts the computer. if anybody can help that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Automatic Disk Defragmenter in Vista
by Guest Jack- 3 replies

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64x with 4GB memory, 500GB HD and most of the bells and whistles.. I like Vista but sometimes notice it slow down to almost a crawl at times and I've never been able to figure out why. When it happens I check the throughput speed on the Net and usually get between 8MB and 12MB. There was an article recently about automatic defragging in Windows Vista so I checked and sure enough, my system was set to automatically defrag every Wednesday at 1pm.. Thinking that might be the reason for the slowdown, I've unchecked the automatic defrag option (although it is recommended) and want to see if this slowdown will continue. Is there a…

I back up regularly using MS Backup to DVD's via Roxio Backup. Can these backups be read by another PC that has MS Backup? With a different (Vista, for example) OS? If so - What must I put in that other PC so it can read my existing DVD based backup and restore files to that other PC?

Did anyone else have a strange install experience with today's Windows Update "Search 4.0 for Windows Vista x64-based Systems (KB940157)?" After the required reboot, my computer remained active in the config screen mode reading "Updating - 97% - Do not turn off your computer" for about 5 hours until I couldn't wait any longer and just turned it off and restarted. All seems fine now and Windows reports the update as successful - but how does one test for this? I realize that the new search engine has to index all files which takes time, but I thought this was done in the background while Windows functioned normally (not pre-boot). I do have many hard disks,…

Windows Media Player

I have a laptop connected to a Sony projector and attempted to show an AVI file from the laptop using Windows Media Player. I can see the Windows Media Player session on both my laptop and the projection screen, but I can not see the AVI in the WMP display on the projection screen. I press the play button and the applications scroll bar at the bottom indicating that the video is playing is moving. The AVI file is playing on my laptop, but WMP display section is black. I have checked the video setting to ensure that AVI files are valid formats. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
