Vista problems 64 bit and 32 bit stability
by Guest Brandon- 7 replies

This is part suggestion, part discussion, part complaint ... (a rant?) Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit I've been using Vista for some months now and I have to say I am deeply unhappy with the OS. I have it running on a Thinkpad T61 (2GHz x 2, 800 MHz FSB), 4GB RAM, 160 5400 SATA, nVidia NVS140m, etc. In my first outing I tried Vista 64bit so I could fully utilise all 4GB of RAM. Yes, while the RAM is available my feeling was that the performance of the laptop was below that of my previous Acer TM803 with 2GB with XP. Initially I had issues because of a known broadcast issue with DHCP and older routers - I could not get Wireless working with DHCP on m…

Wincolor installation failure on x64
by Guest Lee Banyard- 5 replies
I'm desperately trying to install Wincolor on XP Pro x64. (I've been hit by two Samsung displays having different LCD panels in them!). However, when I try to install it, I get the message: "Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet for Windows XP requires that your computer in running Windows XP SP2 and that you have administrative or install privileges on your computer." Well, according to my system properties I am running Service Pack 2, running Windows XP, and I'm logged in as administrator. If I assume it's a problem with compatibility, then what am I supposed to do to synch up my two LCD displays? All the web seems to say is 'install Wincolor'…

64-bit Required for Dual Core...?
by Guest Ben- 7 replies
I have a laptop that came with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. It's a dual core processor -- and for some reason I thought you had to have a 64-bit OS to take advantage of multicore systems. Vista has been a bit of a pain, and I'd rather use XP on it. I have a copy of 32-bit XP Pro -- will the OS take advantage of the dual-core processor? Thanks!

In SIW the "Operating System" page reports: Owner: Microsoft Organization: Microsoft for my copy of Windows Ultimate 64-bit I have edited the Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion and they correctly report my name and my "company name" as I want them to be. I can not figure out where SIW is getting this information, but sometimes when installing new programs they think the Owner is Microsoft and the Organization is Microsoft. I did a search of the entire Registry for "Owner," but I was unsuccessful. Is there *another* key, other than HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current…

by Guest Don- 5 replies

Hey gang, I have Vista 64 bit Ultimate, and have been running the free version of AVG 7.5 I believe it is. I got a message yesterday, that I need to upgrade to the newer version 8, as 7.5 will no longer be supported after then end of this month. I run Spybot Search and Destroy, and of course Windows Defender. Seems like I have seen reports of some conflicts with those, when running AVG 8? Anyone here familiar with this or have experience with the newer version? Thanks, -- Don

Hi all. I just got a new computer with XP Pro on it. The Active Desktop option is missing. THere's no Web tab in the Desktop dialogue box, or in the View Folders Dialogue box. According to the registry, Active Desktop is installed. If it is, why isn't it showing up as an option where it should be? Can anyone tell me how to enable it? Thanks! Caley

How do I correctly delete extra Language Packs?
by Guest Realitygdk@gmail.com- 3 replies
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 –bit computer system. My primary language is English. I have 34 Language Packs, extra-optional, updates, dated April 22, 2008, waiting my okay to install. My immediate question, what are the correct procedures for selecting and deleting these additional language packs? During April when I selected these additional Windows Vista Language Packs, I was thinking that my system would need them when and if I were to visit a foreign language site. I suppose the logic was something on the order, that while on a foreign language page the system would translate the page into English using one or more of these language packs. Okay, I li…

I use Firefox as the default browser in Win Vista HP 64 bit. It works with no problem when running, and has no issues otherwise. The problem is when launching. I get a Error? A box pops up stating "Windows cannot find "TYPED URL" . Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again" After a second, my Firefox opens as normal and I can browse the internet as I wish. Firefox is set as the default browser so I don't understand why this happens... And is there a way to stop this message from coming up?? Thanks in advance for any help... -- JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.... WAXACE

The Msdia80.dll file in wrong partitition
by Guest xiowan- 1 reply

Hi all: I want to replace a 250 GB hard drive with a larger capacity drive but after transferring all the recorded tv in the recorded tv file on the drive, I am left with a Msdia80.dll file on the same partition that is apparently installed in the wrong place. It is part of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package I think. I did not download and install this package but I think it might have been part of either Vista x64 SP1 or more likely part of AVGFree 8.0. which I have since uninstalled thru the control panel because it caused 100% cpu usage during scans of my C: drive on a Q6600 cpu! Most likely just deleting the Msdia80.dll file will c…

Memory Increase for Vista Ultimate 64-bit?
by Guest Jim- 4 replies
The maximum memory one could have in Windows XP x64 was 4 GB per CPU. In Vista Ultimate you can have 128 GB total. (I still have the same 2 CPUs and 8 GB of memory.) Is there any advantage to add 8 more GB of memory to the 8 GB I already have to make a total of 16 GB? I have a Tyan motherboard which can accept up to 8, 2 GB DIMMs. I currently have 8 GB, so I could add 4 more DIMMs. I do not want to waste money, as I really want a new monitor, but I am interested in the possibility of adding more memory if Windows would really take advantage of it. Thank you! Jim

Is this a Windows XP 64-bit group? Or is it a Vista 64-bit group?
by Guest Stan Shankman- 4 replies
Greetings all, Is this a Windows XP 64-bit group? Or is it a Vista 64-bit group? I searched "Microsoft. public" for "64-bit", and this group was found. But because it did not specifically have the word "Vista" in the name, I assume it is a Windows XP 64-bit group. Does anyone know the best group for Vista 64-bit postings? This brings up a small beef I have: Namely, if one searches on the web for "Vista software", one often sees "Vista compatible" mentioned (or some such phrasing), but rarely does one find "Vista 32-bit compatible" and "Vista 64-bit compatible", and especially "Vista 64-bit Native" listed under "system requirements". Why do vendors so …

Yet another question about x86 & x64 Vista Upgrade
by Guest Jon W- 4 replies
After much reading and research trying to find out what included both 32bit & 64bit, and correct me if I'm wrong at any point, the ONLY full retail version that actually comes with both is Ultimate, while all other retail versions are eligible for the alternate media, meaning that you walk out of the store with the 32 bit and can order the 64bit DVD from Microsoft for the cost of S&H. I am also under the impression that the OEM versions can only be purchased with only 32bit or 64bit and are NOT eligible for the alternate media "deal". However the part that completely eludes me and I have searched for days for the answer to this question, because I…

Superfetch bug
by Guest James Bowery- 0 replies

I've been running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit for over about a year and then within the last week or two I noticed that the disk access light was active all the time. After a few hours of investigation I discovered I could get it to shut off by shutting down the Superfetch service. I know that the Superfect service is supposed to run while the system is idle, but is it supposed to run for days on end?
