Vista x64 and x32 activation status
by Guest Romeo Ghiriti- 3 replies

Dear all, I am ordering a custom-made PC and I will be getting an OEM version of Vista Ultimate. Now the choice is mine if it is x32 or x64 I am getting. The x64 version has all the drivers for all the hardware I require, and also has the option of accessing more than 4GB of RAM, which I am interested in. The issue is that if I get the computer with Vista Ultimate x64 OEM and I activate the copy, later down the line I may find that I encounter huge compatibility issues that force me to revert to an x32 version. With x64 version's being activated already, if I install x32 OEM Vista Ultimate (the system builder told me he could provide me with the relevan…

Context menu problem
by Guest Paul C- 4 replies

I run Server 2003 64 bits. Before, I used Windows 2000 Pro. I had a small hexedit program (Yuri Software HEdit), that installed in the context menu without problem. This 32 bits program consists of 2 parts: an .exe and a .dll file. I recently installed the same program under Server 2003 64 bits. The program works fine, except for the fact it does not appear in the file's context menu. In the registry, it is present in HKCR\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. On the other hand I installed a compression program, 7zip (64 bits version), that do appears in the context menu. Anybody an idea of what I have to do to make the program appear in the context menu? Do I hav…

hotkey.sys unable to run under restricted user group
by Guest Paul- 0 replies
Hi, I am having issues attempting to load Acer's hotkey.sys under a non-administrative account. The notebook is a AMD T64 running XP 64. The hotkey.sys driver is needed to access the Bluetooth and WLAN on/off buttons while operating under Windows. It is located in the syswow64/drivers folder. However, unless I give the user adminstrator rights, it is impossible to load this driver. Even under poweruser group the hotkey.sys will not load. I can not give my users adminstrative rights of course, so I am stuck with them not being able to use WLAN functions while on biz trips. Any idea? Thanks.

RE: just an fyi Add me to the list looking for 64bit Version OneCare for new Vista Ultimate install. I've purchased OneCare from its lanch and can not believe the mighty MS does not have a 64bit version ready. How is it the biggest companies with the most people and money are always the slowest to accomplish a task? Thanks Theo for alternatives. I'm just really disappointed Microsoft doesn't have a 64bit OneCare system to sell me. "Highdef2005" wrote: > I was running XP. by Guest Denise- 2 replies

Hi, I have Windows XP x64. Yesterday, I installed Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise. There were no problems installing it and it works fine. Up until a few minutes ago, my pc had no problems. When I rebooted a few minutes ago, my pc received the below runtime error. It's never happened before. I don't know if the error is connected to 2007 Enterprise or if something else is causing it. "Runtime Error, Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: ...ram Files (x86)Ascentive\Performance Center\APCMain.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for m…

Hello all: If like me you've had any problems with your Hauppauge TV tuner in Vista 64 Bit, I just came upon this comment on the Hauppauge website: "Currently, WinTV receivers used with the 64-bit version of the Vista Media Center application are limited to less than 4GB of memory." Here the url for more complete info on the Hauppauge tv tuners: http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/vista.html I now wonder if there are other drivers that Vista 64 bit won't work right with 4GB+ RAM? xiowan..........in tucson

Migrating from XP x64 to Vista Ultimate 64-bit
by Guest Jim- 2 replies
Hi Helpful Group! :-) I thought I'd make a *positive* post for a change. I actually got something to work! I migrated my system from XP Professional x64 to Vista Ultimate 64- bit. I expected a nightmare, as I had a relatively old Tyan K8WE (S2895) motherboard and I was using Opteron 270 CPUs. I also had a beta driver and BIOS for my AMCC 3ware 9550SX SATA2 RAID card. I can not say it was easy, as it took me several nights of being up until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. to get the old machine ready, but the actually *install* of Vista was almost painless. It seemed as if it took less than one hour. I have then spent several days reinstalling software. The mach…

For those without Vista, how do we get DX10? 32- & 64-Bit users in XP?

I have a cd rom that is really old, and I tried to run it, but nothing happened when I put it in the cd drive. I know that xp does not run 16-bit memory, but I was wondering if there is a downloadable thing that would allow me to run the disc. If this helps, the cd rom says, " MS DOS ISO-9660 " Thanks zman

Odd display problem - desktop bigger then monitor
by Guest Zootal- 6 replies
Here is an odd problem - I'm using an SIS mother board and an SIS chipset. The monitor is a Sony HMD1240. If I put the video into any mode > 1024x768, the desktop will become larger then the monitor, and as I move my mouse around, the desktop will scroll back and forth. My lap does this if I select a resolution bigger then what the screen can display, but in this case the monitor can easily handle 1280x1024. Is there any way to force the video card to actually switch to this mode?

Default Icons for htm & mht files in Vista x64
by Guest Lynn Henderson- 0 replies

I installed Vista x64 Ultimate over the weekend, and I notice that my icons for htm and mht files are the default "blank" ones that are used for unknown file types rather than the normal IE icons. In searching the web, someone mentioned such a problem after installing Office 2007, which I also have. I've tried changing the htmfiles default icon in the registry, but it didn't have any effect.

Strange performance issue on 2003 X64
by Guest flybean- 3 replies

Hi all, I met a strange performance issue on Windows 2003 Enterprise X64 Edition with SP2 / Intel Xeon 3G(4chips * 4cores/chip) . On the server, there is a j2ee containner with some applications. A simple jsp code to query/insert/update some tables after the client clicked the submit. The clients complained that this update is slowly. I did a test on both the server and another pc. The result is very strange: From the server, the code executed costing 400ms, while 5+ seconds from PCs! Any ideas? The SNP is disiabled. Flybean 2008-05-04

Hey gang, I posted the below, in the Media Center group couple of days ago, have not got any responses yet. Thought I might try here next, as there are some pretty knowledgeable folks hang out in here. Anyone else ever run across this? Not sure if it is something I should be very concerned about or not... I recently, have starting getting this message pop up on occasion, even when I am not running Media Player , or Media Center. " Windows Media Store Update Manager has stopped working". I click on to submit for more information, and do not get anything back. I copied the below, out of the details screen: Problem signature: Problem Even…

cpu usage hovers around 50%
by Guest cpw- 15 replies

I am using Win XP Pro x64 at work for 3D CAD. The cpu usage hovers around 50% when the 3D CAD is doing calculations. Most of the time the HD is idling and I have enough memory for the job, so I presume these two items are not dragging the system. I can tell I am spending an hour per day accumulatively on waiting and I certainly want to cut this down. There is a hotfix KB896256 for the XP SP2, but it seems not for the 64 bit machine as the installation warns me "This KB896256 is for a different hardware platform." Has anyone experienced the same and is there any other tweak? Hardware: ASUS P5K Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 8GB DDR2 800MHz NVidia Qu…
