I just did a clean install due to some new hardware and my IE is stuck on that first page that lets you set preferences. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 It went there once, I tried to make choices and go on but it hung. It just keeps going to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 and erroring out with "Page cannot be displayed." I have set my homepage to MSN.com and if I click home it goes there biut it opens everytime to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 and erroring out with "Page cannot be displayed." Thanks for any help and suggestions, Sam

Vista SP1 applied revisited
by Guest Kue2- 2 replies

Here is an interesting information.I I went to Msconfig & disabled everything in Start-up & in services I disabled everything except Microsoft services. Guess what.....it takes a whopping 3 mins & 20 secs to boot timing from when the desktop first appears. I wish I had did that before installing SP1. Then I could say SP1 is causing my slow down.Any ideas why my system is taking so long to boot.It was alot faster in the past. I think I could boot in under 2 mins before Carlos any ideas bud......... -- Hugh

Start Menu Sleep button
by Guest fs_fan- 5 replies

Is there anyway the red button in the start menu can be set to shut down the computer instead of putting it to sleep mode? This is because my network card (ASUS Striker Extreme MOBO with NVidia nForce networking controllers) crashes whenever my computer enters sleep mode. In addition, I shut down the computer much more often than putting it to sleep.

Vista with Sp1 applied
by Guest Kue2- 8 replies

Two things I noticed right away : 1: Sleep mode is still broken on my machine as it takes almost 5 mins. to connect after coming out of sleep mode. Any ideas how I can get my internet connection to "awake-up" faster (marvel Yukon drivers latest version applied) 2: Views set in folders still do not hold. I am not counting the very slow boot-up,(about 5mins give or take 30 sec).that still has not changed either. I know one of the culprits is the "new" AVG 8.0. It takes 94 secs to load according to windows. -- Hugh

Activation triggering sensitivity with SP1
by Guest Carlos- 5 replies
We have seen during last year many complaints about Vista asking for reactivation after just updating a hard disk driver. Does anybody know whether this sensitivity to hardware (or driver) changes has been eased with SP1 or not? RFM (Reduced Functionality Mode) is now "lighter" than the pre-SP1 era and I was wondering whether something similar happens with the reactivation triggering level. Just being curious on a cloudy Thursday morning. Carlos

Drive letters in a XP/ XP64 dual boot?
by Guest Pat- 12 replies
I installed XP Pro x64 in a dual with XP Pro x32 on my workstation last night. The install went pretty well, with the installer having all the drivers it needed to get a usable system (the printer being the one exception). Thanks again to every one who responded to my previous posts about this. There is one thing though that I have a question about. XP64 was installed on a second hard drive that was assigned the drive letter "D:" during the install (as expected). Despite the "D:" designation, I thought when booted up it would be assigned "C:" (and HD1, where XP32 is installed, would be given some other letter). At least I believe that's how it wor…

by Guest Scrat- 1 reply

Just attended the Microsoft "Heroes Happen here" 2008 product-line roll-out in Seattle. Developer Track. It was worthwhile simply on the basis of the free software I received: 1. Enterprise Server 2008, 32-bit and 64-bit versions - 1-year trial license 2. SQL Server 2008 Standard w/voucher for upgrade to Release - retail license 3. Visual Studio 2008 Standard - retail license 4. Vista Ultimate 32-bit w/SP1 - retail license 5. 90 day One-care license 6. Windows Mobile Developer Resource Kit - trial license (don't know how long, haven't opened; probably 1-year) I have never been a a fan of Multiple Sclerosis, but I have to admit, if these 2008 version…

Media Center Problems. Please help...
by Guest LittleGecko- 1 reply

I hate Media Center...Its a new sony desktop, and everytime I start media center I get SYS stopped responding. I hope someone can tell me how to fix this, without having to call Sony. Like an update or something from the windows site would be great. Also, It does not record shows that I have set to record for some reason. I know its not that there's not enough space on the hard drive. Its a 500 GB hard drive and I have two. And sometimes it will only record 5 mins of the show or all of the show. Sometimes it get more than 5 mins but not the whole show. I'm thinking it has to be vista, and/or a program conflict. I have spy sweeper, and nothing else is ru…

Strange Printer Problems
by Guest David Orazine- 6 replies

Hello, I have a server running server 2003 (x64). It is a DC (Back up) and a print server among other things. When certain users print to a certain printer (HP Laser Jet 4200), the program requesting the print job hangs. Then when the user requests the properties sheet, nothing will happen. These users can print to other printers hosted on that machine, and other users can print the this 4200. I am currently attributing the problem to RPC errors that have been happening (End point mapper) on my DC and when I add clients to the domain. As well as this error: Event Type: Error Event Source: Srv Event Category: None Event ID: 2000 Date: 03-10-200…

64 Bit Server 2003 Questions
by Guest YFNSR- 1 reply

We have some machines we are going to run Virtual Server 2005 R2 on that have more that 4GB of memory so we want to upgrade to use Server 2003 Enterprise 64 bit and have a few questions: - Does the 64 bit version use more memory that the 32 bit version? - Will 32 bit software still run successfully on the 64 bit system? - Will code we have written with the 32 bit version of the .NET framework run without modifications on a 64 bit Server? - For machines that I am going to run the 64 bit version of SQL Server 2005 I know I want them to be 64 bit Server 2003 but on boxes that I am running Active Directory, DNS, SharePoint, Exchange, etc. should I a…

Vista 64bit - Adminstrative Tools MMC using 64bit?
by Guest null- 2 replies
I was poking around and noticed the following: Administrative Tools > Services (%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc) However the following exists as well: (%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\services.msc) So, is Vista 64 by default using the 32bit versions, or are the 64bit version in system32 as well? Note: When I run both neither have the "*32" which I'm assuming is a flag for 32bit support. Needless to say I'm a little confused.

xp 64 vs vista 64?
by Guest Pat- 19 replies
I know this is a topic that's been beaten to death, and I've read a lot of the discussions comparing these two. What's interesting (and confusing) is the lack of consensus - some like xp64 better (because it's faster and uses less resources) and others prefer vista (almost as fast, greater driver availability, and future support). I was at first leaning towards xp64, but am now rethinking this (due mainly to future support issues - if I buy a new printer or camera, it will more likely have Vista 64 drivers available). But there are a couple of things I'm still not clear on: 1. Will Vista 64 run older 32-bit software, like MS Office XP and MS Proje…

Permissions Nightmares
by Guest JasonArcher- 0 replies

I've had some issues with Microsoft software (Office 2007, Visual Basic Studio Express) installations on Vista 64. The install shows a successful completion, but it seems that a number of registry keys are being written with no permissions assigned to them. Once written in this way, the keys cannot be viewed or modified by any account on my system, to include the administrator account. The result for Office 2007 is that the Microsoft installer is invoked each time I start one of the Office applications, followed by the Office Configuration dialogue box. It takes as much as 5 minutes for any Office app to start up. In Visual Basic Studio Express, it noti…

Heard of any workarounds for Spellcheck in OE?

I don't know if anyone with XP Pro x64 has experienced this yet or not. I knew about it before I installed my OS, but the SpellChecker in Outlook Express in XP Pro x64 does not work. I read a technical explanation of why this is, but for the life of me, couldn't possible begin to explain it in English. There's gotta' be afix for this though. Anyone heard anything? -- DancingGopher

32/64 Bit Dual Boot Login Woes
by Guest InterDesign- 1 reply

I have a system that we are trying to dual boot from Windows XP Professional 32 bit on C: and Windows XP Professional 64-bit on S:. This machine authenticates to a domain with a Windows 2003 R2 Server as the DC. Everything seems to go according to plan until joining the domain. The first time the 64 Bit OS boots, you can login and join the domain... but shortly afterward when going back to login to the 32 Bit we find that the workstation can no longer connect to the domain or login locally (even though the 64 bit os can). The only way around this is to log in locally as the administrator, remove the computer from the domain and rejoin it... but then on…

Hello, I have a Server 2003 (64-bit) machine that is running backup exec 11d. When I try to backup elements that are not the file system in I receive this error: V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS Snapshot error. Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) cannot communicate with the writers. Check that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is started, and check the Windows Event Viewer for errors related to this service. Dose anyone know how to fix this issue? Thank you, David
