My workstation (HP xw9300 with dual Opteron 280 cpus) is currently set up in a dual boot between Windows XP Pro (x32) and Linux (where each OS is on its own hard drive). For various reasons I've decided to drop Linux and would like to replace it with Windows XP Pro x64. Ideally, I would like to make XP Pro x64 my primary OS, but have the ability to access my older XP Pro x32 installation, when needed, via a virtual machine like VMware or VirtualPC. That's what I've been doing from Linux, and it's work pretty well for that occasional need. My question is, what's the best way to get from my current setup to where I'd like to be? Also, my workstation…

Quad core benching like a dual
by Guest Power Obsessed- 23 replies

The last benchmark I ran was about a third of the normal level as far as performance. I checked the task manager and all for cores ARE being utilized. The first thought was faulty benchmark results and/or software. The thing that really concerned me was while looking at the task manager performance results all four cores spiked a 100%. They didn't stay there but, thats outside the norm. I have rarely seen the levels rise above 50% so this coupled with the benchmark has me concerned. Anyone have any idea what is going on with this thing? -- Asus P5W DH , Q6600 Quad core 2.4ghz @3.12, thermalake V1 heatsink, 4gb Crucial ballistix 800mhz , 16gb Mtr…

I just ordered a quad core desktop and I opted for the Vista Premium 64-bit OS. After doing some reading I found that an important piece of software won't work on 64. Is there any way that I can go down to 32? will my 64 product key work for 32 as well? What is the best way to go from my OEM 64 down to 32?

Windows shortcuts, compuuter un-useable
by Guest b34nzzz- 4 replies

Starting last night, my keyboard keys started going crazy. Some stopped working, most others now point to a shortcut rather than a key. For example, if I type "F" the computer minimizes all windows. Maybe "C" brings up the Vista search box. I don't know what to do or how to fix it, it's driving me insane. I'm typing this form another computer because mine is un-useable. I first started to notice the problem last night as I was switching between COD4 multi-player and vent. Some idiot was screaming into vent so I hit the windows key to mute him and that's when it all started. First thing I noticed was my "c" button in game used to crouch was no longer working. T…

How to get rid of this prompt on move or copy files?
by Guest Alan Gruskoff- 2 replies
With the new WinXP x64 version, we picked up a hurdle I need to get rid of. When every I copy of move a file within my office network. WinXp 64 decides to "protect me" and opens a dialog box asking: "Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?" This is really annoying and slowing me down with no purpose. Do they really assume that people running the x64 version are novices that need this interuption? How do I kill this dialog box?? -- Flex and REALbasic Developer

Restore "Search" context menu
by Guest Carlos- 10 replies
After SP1 is applied, you will no longer have the "Search" option in Windows Explorer context menues. MSFT must have had good reasons to do it but I'd rather live with "Search" in its "old" location. If you want the Pre-SP1 state, just follow these instructions (no reboot required). 1. Open regedit and go to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find 2. In right-side pane, delete String value “LegacyDisable“. And that's it! Carlos

Does ACHI inprove performance?
by Guest Power Obsessed- 12 replies
I recently purchased a Mtron SSD and was surprised when I benchmarked it that it didn't perform as advertised. (they claim 80mb/sec I got 72mb/sec). Someone who saw my benchmark said that if I switch the bios to ACHI it would boost it by about 20gb/sec. I tried and kept getting an error screen (Blue screen). Is this true about the improved performance and if so how do I enable the ACHI? -- Asus P5W DH , Q6600 Quad core 2.4ghz @3.12, thermalake V1 heatsink, 4gb Crucial ballistix 800mhz , 16gb Mtron 6000 SSD, 150gb Raptor X, Nvidia 8800gt , 700 watt OCZ GameXStream power s , XP Pro X64

Hi, my highschool has a Windows 2003 server and is using a portion of it as student accounts. You can go to any computer in the school and it will show the login prompt (Windows NT as client) and you got to choose the domain. Once you loged on it connect you to the server. I would like to know if you could use Windows XP Pro as a user server type machine to replicate my schools server, and how to do it. Thank you.

Norton System Works Premier on Vista 64
by Guest Howard Swope- 0 replies

I recently purchased Norton System Works Premier 2008 to run on Vista 64. Issues: 1. Save and Restore 2.0 originally listed itself as a 30 day trial. This was very confusing. I spent a lot of time with tech support trying to figure it out. I woke up the next morning and it had activated itself. I am not sure how this occurred. 2. Norton System Doctor, part of Norton Utilities, will only read up to 4 GB of RAM. All my other system tools show my full 8. 3. Norton System Doctor's live update monitor always shows me needing an update even though I ran live update recently and had all updates. 4. Defragmenter tool interface is less than desirable. P…

XP Pro running as x32
by Guest Alden- 6 replies

My XP Pro came with some system advisory tools, and it is saying it is only using 32 bits of my 64 bit processor and thinks I should upgrade my version of windows. Has anyone else had this problem? It won't run x64 apps AT ALL, my screen just goes white for a sec on some x64 programs then back to normal. Anyone know how to fix? I've run Windows Update twice. Thank you/
