I am running XP64 on an AMD 6400+ with dual Seagate 7200.11's in RAID 0, and I am running into a few problems with installing any of the .NET Framework versions. Every time i go to install it, it gets a few seconds into the install and shuts down the install with an Error message "Invalid Character in Program Files (x86)" So i have been looking around forums and I have tried unassigning the DVD drive, and then installing and I just get Invalid drive E:\, And havent been able to find any other solutions beyond reassigning the drive letters. This is for .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5

Hyper-V RC released
by Guest Charlie Russel - MVP- 1 reply

MS announced the Release Candidate of the Hyper-V for Windows Server 2008. This RC includes a Hyper-V Manager that runs on Windows Vista SP1, and better localization, along with additional supported guest operating systems. I've been running it for a few days, and I'm pretty happy with it. See my blog for some more details, but if you have been running the beta that shipped with the 64-bit RTM versions of Windows Server 2008, make sure you update carefully. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel

CHKDSK "Replacing invalid security id..."
by Guest Andrew Tapp- 8 replies
- 1.3k views
I've been running Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on my DELL XPS M1710 laptop for at least 6 months with no issues. I regularly take backups (usually twice a week) using Norton Ghost 12 (2008) and the laptop is patched with ALL the latest software updates from both Microsoft and Symantec (Norton). Earlier today the backup that i normally take hung at 34% and the estimated time left continued to climb. Normally this backup would take about 90 minutes. I cancelled the backup and thinking that there may be a file system error, scheduled a CHKDSK C: /f, and rebooted the computer. CHKDSK has started finding a number of issues including "Deleting an index …

Problem obtaining 64 bit Vista HP
by Guest Denzig- 8 replies
Okay, so I bought Vista HP and after opening realized that it's only the 32 bit version when I wanted the 64 bit. I obviously didn't do enough research before purchasing, but when at the store noticed that they didn't have any versions that listed 64 bit, so didn't think it was a big deal. Still, after opening I found the offer inside to go to the link http://www.windowsvista.com/1033/ordermedia and I could purchase the 64 bit version for a minimal fee. However, after going to the site, entering my product key, I get the following: We're sorry, the following error(s) have occurred: No Offer Found I re-read everything that came with my software, a…

Media player / Media Center?
by Guest Channelkat- 1 reply

I just installed Vista Ultimate 64. I have updated everything including service pack 1, but media player still keeps giving me problems. "Windows Media Player has stopped working A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." The problem seems to be the reason media center is giving me trouble when I try to use it: "Windows Media Center has lost its remote connection to media player and needs to be restarted." I have exhausted my troubleshooting skills (admittedly limited) and have not been able to correct it. I have successfully installed other programs (Suc…

Cannot share a drive, because already shared?
by Guest LoWang- 5 replies
Hello, I have 3 partitions and I wanted to set sharing of the third one. I heard that admin sharing with $ were removed in vista, but then I ran a command "net share" and saw that it is not true, because c$ and d$ are shared. e$ was not, so I wanted to set it, but it said, that it is already used although it was not! So what does it mean? I had to share this drive as "E" not e$... http://www.ukazto.com/?img=2450233,vista_sharing_error.jpg

Heads-up For Canadian Customers Ordering 64-bit
by Guest Permafried-- 0 replies

Hi, I am not sure if this issue has been posted to date; however I did not turn up anything with my search prior to posting this thread. My hope is those in Canada who will be ordering the 64-bit version of Windows VISTA will catch this before moving forward. When placing your order, the site gives you the option of waiting 10 business days for shipment (via DHL), or for an additional fee having delivery within 5 days via Purolator. After calling to determine where my shipment was today I was informed that Microsoft in no way, shape or form offers expedited shipping on Canadian bound deliveries even though the website provides the option and happil…

Interpretation of Taskmanager
by Guest Paul C- 3 replies
Hi I'm running Server 2003 Standard x64 version on a dual-core AMD64 motherboard.. When running a 64 bits application like 7zip (64 bits version) for the compreession of large files, I see in Taskmanager it uses 85-95 % of the CPU. When running a 32 bits application, for example Ulead's VideoStudio for video-editing, I see it uses a little less than 50 %. Question: am I correct if interpreting that the 64 bit application uses both CPU's, and that the 32 bits uses one CPU? Thank you. Paul Casman

Cleaning up restore points not working in Vista 64?
by Guest Don- 8 replies

Hey gang, I posted the below couple days ago in Vista general, did not have any luck there perhaps due to the high noise to signal ratio, so thought I would try here. Any feedback would certainly be appreciated. Note - I have not yet installed SP1. Hey gang, I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. When I go to disk cleanup, and choose to cleanup files for " all users", I get the more options tab, with the choice to let me choose to delete all but the last restore point. However, when I do this, it does not appear to delete any of the older restore points? Is this a known issue perhaps, or am I missing something? Thanks for any tips here…

Running 32 bit .NET programs on 64 bit Vista
by Guest segallw@gmail.com- 5 replies

Hi, If I installed 64 bit Vista on a pc with 8GB RAM, do 32 bit programs have access to the additional RAM over 3GB (or is it 4GB 32bit programs are limited to?). For example, on a pc with 8GB physical RAM, say one 32bit program use 2GB RAM, if Vista has already used 4GB ram, does the 32bit program use the next lot of 2GB as though it is the first lot of 2GB or is it simply unable to address the memory? If this is unclear, I'll put it another way. If I have 6 x 32bit programs each using say 1GB of RAM on Vista x64, does the operating system assign each 32bit program 1GB RAM and handle any memory address issues? I guess being 32bit they're not actually …

Drivers Search
by Guest Vargr- 13 replies

I have recently obtained a MCE Remote control for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005. I chose it because the reviews say that it does work with 64 bit Vista ultimate, so 64 bit drivers must exist. Unfortunately it is not being recognised by 64 bit XP Pro. Does anyone know of anywhere that I can download the 64 bit drivers that were written for Vista? Or which files I need to extract from a Vista 64 source CD to install on XP Pro 64? Thanks for any assistance

Vista SP1 flunks university test Penn ban By Egan Orion: Friday, 21 March 2008, 4:31 PM VISTA SP1 isn't good enough to install yet, according to the computer support staff at the University of Pennsylvania. The University's Information Systems and Computing organisation has advised faculty and students not to upgrade to SP1 any computers they might have that are running Windows Vista, Information Week writes. The university techies said they will support Vista SP1 that's been pre-installed on new systems, but cautioned in a bulletin to campus users that it "strongly recommends that all other users adopt a 'wait and see' attitude." The Ivy Lea…

Vista 64 and license
by Guest DEHawk- 3 replies

I am thinking of upgrading to Vista Premium 64bit. I just bought a new laptop and I ordered Vista Premium 64bit with it and so far I like it. I have two home desktops as well and this is what the new Vista Premium will be for. First are there very many issues/conflicts with software? Office 2007, games, I-Tunes, Mozilla etc...? Same goes for drivers. Second do I have to buy two separate copies of Vista Premium, or can I buy one copy and purchase an additional license? Looking for the least expensive route, buying two copies of Vista Premium will be very expensive. Thanks

32 bit Ultimate to 64 bit
by Guest rpbrown- 3 replies

I have installed the 32 bit full Ultimate addition on one computer. Since then I changed hard drives on that computer and went back to XP Pro for software reasons. My questions is since that version is not being used anymore can I use my purchased full addition on another computer where I want to do the 64 bit thing. To reiterate - the other comuter that had Vista Ultimate on it no longer does. Again - can I use that license and upgrade a new computer with that one copy of Vista? Thank you and if you want to email me direct: rpbrown88@comcast.net

Hello! 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' is listed on the Startup tab in the 'System configuration' window in my Windows Vista x64. But the 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' does not exist actually. I deleted the 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' from hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run but starting the WMP adds the c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe to the hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run again. Why? Why is the c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe in the hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run a…

've heard from a friend that there's a service pack for .net 2.0. I'm not sure what the official channel for hearing about such things is, but anyway he told me and I want it. After a bit of searching I found: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=029196ED-04EB-471E-8A99-3C61D19A4C5A&displaylang=en but it clearly states: Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows XP I've tried this, in case the description is wrong, but no joy. I can't find any support for Vista Ultimate 64. Does such a thing exist?

Logon Problem After SP1 Installed
by Guest Wylee- 2 replies

I installed SP1 for Vista x64 yesterday and have encountered the following problem since then: Computer boots up fine and allows me (or the other user) to logon without difficulty. After logon all works as expected. I will then 'switch user' and my wife will logon Then we get a problem (same problem presents itself if she logs on first, then logs off and I log on, or we switch user, basically problem presents itself when first user 'switch user' or' logs off' and another user logs on, the problem is with the second user; interestingly, the problem also occurs if I log on, log off, then log on again! Problem solved after system reset). The logon begins a…

XP 64 and Audio Issues
by Guest Red Dog- 5 replies

Hope someone can help. On my new system I have a problem with audio distortion under XP64. I set up a dual boot with XP 32 and I don't have any problems with the audio on that OS. The device manufacturer says that there are no driver issues and they have been thoroughly tested under XP64 and Vista64. Microsoft won't help with the problem and I'm running out of time before getting hardware replacements. One of those deals where everyone is pointing at someone else. One other thing I noticed under XP64 is that when it's detecting a device that's been added, or anything plugged into the USB or Firewire port, the mouse freezes or operates erratically unti…
