CPU/Motherboard Upgrade
by Guest Jim Henriksen- 13 replies
I have been running XP-64 for two years. It is far and away the best version of Windows I have used. It's rock solid and responsive. I'd like to upgrade to a dual-core CPU and new motherboard, but I have tons of software installed on my current machine, and I don't want to spend three days upgrading. What's the quickest and safest way to do so? I could just rebuild my system, including the current hard drive as-is, turn on the power and hope for the best. How capable is XP-64 when it comes to on-the-fly changes of CPUs and associated drivers, etc?

NTFS uses least used clusters ? (Cluster durability/lifetime ?)
by Guest Skybuck Flying- 5 replies
Hello, Somebody believes NTFS works as follows: When NTFS needs to write new data to the disk it finds the clusters which have been least used. This would ensure longer disk life. If NTFS simply re-used the same clusters over and over and over again this would lead to early drive failure (???). Is there any thruth in this or is this internet/usenet myth ? Me wonders... (It does so via a list of clusters somebody said.) (Freeed clusters would be added to the back of the list) (Needed clusters would be removed from the front of the list) Thus this would automatically cycle the clusters somewhat. Sounds plausible. Bye, Skybuck.

Dual Dell 3007WFPs in xp64
by Guest spaf- 3 replies
I have 2 Dell 3007WFPs and can't seem to get them both working together. The second monitor is always detected as an analog display and will never display a picture. I'm not sure if this is an xp64 prob or something else as all my machines are xp64. I've tried several different machines, Lots of different versions of the nVidia drivers. nVidia 8800gtx, 7950, 3450 quadro and ATi cards. I have no problem getting a 3007wfp and a 2405fpw working together. Or other variations of monitors when there's only 1 3007. but if there's 2 3007s the second will never display a picture. Any ideas? Thanks.

Future of XP Professional x64 1 2
by Guest Music64- 28 replies

I have noticed a number of software developers offering 64 bit versions of their applications for Vista 64 only. ( also drivers for hardware ) Can we count on XP Pro 64 to be around for a while or is Microsoft planning to gently guide us to Vista ? I am currently at a crossroads and can't decide whether to change apps and hardware to match XP Pro 64 or change OS to Vista 64. Any thoughts on the future of XP Pro 64 ?

Is there anyway to get Vista Ultimate X64 to use more than 4090mb for ReadyBoost? I upgraded to 8gb RAM and figured I should match my RAM size with my ReadyBoost size but it will only go to 4090mb. -- Sam

sound
by Guest Ralph- 1 reply

Hello, I just have a pair of cheap speakers and am using the onboard sound. This will be a sound tweaking question. In preview, how do I get the sound to work across players? Video has been affected. When I started playing media files and movies, Media Player worked great. I then tried to play a few files I'd downloaded, and Media Player wouldn't play, I got some codecs, and also got a couple more players, namely Divx and GOM. GOM seems to play video more evenly, but the sound is cheaper than it should be. DIVX plays its own files better, and has the best sound. Unfortunately, they seem to have taken Media Player down a peg, and the video stutter…

I have Vista 64Bit Dual boot with Windows XP 32Bit 4GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 I have previously been able to use Remote Assistance. Tried initiating through Messenger both Live and previous, as well as by invitation. Others can provide assistance to me however I cannot to others. Remote Assistance does not error out. Task Manager shows msra.exe started in the Processes tab. No CPU useage but Memory usage. I have looked in the event viewer and the only error listed is: Log Name: Microsoft…

Cisco VPN for Vista x64?
by Guest Byrdo- 4 replies

does it exist? Im thinking it probably doesnt which is really unfortunate... Im running Ultimate x64 with SP1 and Im really impressed! Vista seems so much better since I used it last November, its quick, nothing crashing and nearly all of my critial apps work...except for my Cisco VPN client, I get an error when trying to install it. last year when I tried to use Vista (32 or 64) most of my applications didnt work but now everything works except vpn, which is a show stopper, Im a network admin and without it I cant do my job. Considering that MS and Cisco are so tight you would think that this would be available now. Cisco, a technology giant, a co…

Firefox 3 creams rivals Three times faster than IE7 By Nick Farrell: Thursday, 13 March 2008, 7:39 AM PERFORMANCE specs for the latest beta of the OpenSauce Firefox 3.0 suggest that the browser is shedloads faster than anything out there. Benchmarketing carried out by Percy Cabello, who posted his results on the Mozilla Links blog, show that that Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 is 53 per cent faster than Opera 9.5 beta, twice as fast as Safari and three times faster than IE7. The tests use the SunSpider benchmark, which looks at JavaScript performance. A big cheese at the Mozzarella Foundation was quick to say it was all down to superior engineering. Howe…

Microsoft wants to freeze the Vista incapable lawsuit Hang on, wait till everyone forgets By Egan Orion: Monday, 10 March 2008, 4:23 PM EVER SLIPPERY, Microsoft asked that the "Vista Capable" lawsuit against it be stayed while it appeals the judge's approval of class action standing for the case. The lawsuit, filed almost a year ago, claims that Microsoft misled punters in late 2006 by letting PC makers stick "Vista Capable" labels on lower power machines sold with Windows XP that were later found capable of running only the Home Basic version of Windows Vista rather than the full version that includes most of Vista's new features including the Aero …

Vista prices cut by as much as 48%, but not in U.S. Prices for the OS will be trimmed 15% to 20% in the U.S. By Gregg Keizer February 29, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. is cutting the retail price of its Windows Vista operating system by as much as 20% in the U.S., but will slash at least some versions' price tags by more than 46% in both the U.K. and the European Union, the company confirmed today. Hey guys I am having trouble installing Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition on my computer. I have a Dell E520 with a Intel Core 2 CPU at 2.13 ghz and 4 gigs of RAM. When I insert the 64-bit CD it says "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media." I am currently running Vista Home Premium 32-bit and just want to upgrade. Setup works if I try to install the 32-bit version of Ultimate however. Do I not have the specs needed to install 64-bit? Thanks!

New Computer

I have just bought a quad core computer with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and would appreciate some tips on how to copy my address book contents from Outlook 2000 over to the new computer so that the email addresses can be used with the included email client. At the moment on my present computer, I share the contacts in Outlook 2000 with Outlook Express V6. I also have calendar appointment entries in Outlook that I would like to copy over to the new machine if there is a calendar program included. I have a network set up in the house and both computers will for at least a while be connected to the network. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

New to 64!
by Guest DancingGopher- 3 replies

I'm new to x64. I just reformatted from XP Pro and loaded up XP Pro x64. I must say, I am surprised that many people are having so many problems. On that note, I would offer one word of advice...Do your research!...I Googled my brains off before I ever loaded XP x64 onto my system. I first found out about the drivers needing to be x64. That was no problem, since NVidia makes them now. I also found drivers for my Audigy SE sound card and my Canon Pixma printer. The only thing I am working on now is what kind of Java to install. the x64 version or the x32. I need it for Limewire Pro. I also wrote my support people for some of the apps I used to use, asking t…
