Vista x64 SP1
by Guest Chris Cowles- 13 replies

I just bought a new HP m9100t with VHPx64. I'm happy with it so far. I have a full retail license for Vista Ultimate and a technet subscription allowed me to download Vista Ultimate SP1 x64. I tried to upgrade the VHPx64 using SP1x64 but it wouldn't let me. It said I could only upgrade SP1 to SP1. I used my retail Ultimate x64 DVD to upgrade the OEM VHP x64. There were no problems. Is there any way to use the technet SP1 full install DVD to apply SP1 to the existing OEM install? -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL

Vista Ultimate 32-Bit or 64-Bit ~~ Which is the way to go??
by Guest Seidell23231- 3 replies

OK, it appears that with a clean install, I can in fact move over to the 64-Bit world! My PC is an HP Pavillion Elite m9150f. The basic spec's are as follows: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 3GB DDR 2 RAM NVIDIA 8500GT with 256MB Dedicated 720GB HD @ 7800RPM (2 320GB HD's in RAID 0 Config) New system, still at factory level. Use it heavy in the Office 2008 arena. Play RPG style games; Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights, Call to Duty 2 & 4. Use Quicken 2008, iTunes (Movies, Music, iPhone) and all of the factory loaded software. My system has a twin on the HP Shopping site, same ID, but ships with Vista 64-Bit. The retail version (mine) shipped with the 32…

Back up and Restore
by Guest Dan- 5 replies

I recently had to reinsall my operating system. I went to great lengths to back up my files/programs using the XP backup and restore application. I placed the files on a portable hard drive. I installed the operating system and using the restore application tried to restore MS Money Deluxe 2007 for example. The restore application said it worked successfully; however Money would not run. I had to download a trial version and then restore my Money back up file. Same situation without Outlook Express V6. None of my mail files and address book work. Can someone please advise or help?

Update #1 DirectX runtimes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=740AC79A-5B72-447D-84F9-EE6407ED1A91&displaylang=en MSFT released its march update to the DirectX runtimes. This is not an imperative update. Use it only if some game is complaining about not finding some directx "something". There is no harm in installing this update and no reboot is required. I have already done it, I like to have my dll's up to date. Update #2 Sun has a new update of its Java Machine. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Go to the "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5" and click on the download button. Transfer from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit
by Guest Question Mark?- 4 replies
I wanted to transfer files and programs from my old computer which is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit to a new computer running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Easy Transfer will not allow it as the 64-bit computer cannot locate the cable or the drivers for the cable. And I attempted to use PCMover by iolo, but it does not support the 64-bit system. Is it possible to do such a transfer and how?

Hiding Vista volumes from XP (volsnap.sys issue revisited) 1 2
by Guest Colin Barnhorst- 34 replies

There is still lots of confusion about the incompatibility between XP and Vista that leads to the loss of Vista's recovery options when multi-booting Vista and XP. I have prepared a Greypaper (it would be a whitepaper if I just knew what I was doing :)) for those interested or needing to resolve the problem on their own computers. The attachment is based on my own notes in securing my test box from this problem. I multi-boot XP Pro x86, XP Pro x64, Vista x86, and Vista x64 so the example in the Greypaper is for more than just dual-booting. The attachment is in Word .doc format so any edition of Word or the Word Viewer (free download from Office Downl…

pagefile size for 8gb RAM
by Guest Sam Steinhauser- 3 replies
I upgraded my Vista Ultimate X64 to 8gb RAM. Windows suggests my pagefile be set to 12288. I always set min-max to the same size. I'm trying it with no page file at the moment butI'm unsure if that's wise. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's still accessing my 4gb ReadyBoost. I thought with that much RAM Readyboost was useless. -- Sam

error message from Viesta 64 ultimate event viewer
by Guest None_Ya_- 2 replies

I have done a complete reinstall twice on a hp pavilion tx1000, its a tablet pc. On both installs after it is done installing the system comes up to the vista screen but then reboots by its self after a minute or two. I have stopped the auto reboot function through computer properties and system protection ( i think thats right). I can get it to safe mode where it is fine and i am able to read the event viewer which gives me a event code of 7000, which btw happened 45 times in an hr, and a description of "The fbikb_nt service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading." Now i have been on line with HP's tech …

XP x64 - starved for RAM when handling large files?
by Guest Homer J. Simpson- 2 replies
Hi all, For the past couple of months, my XP x64 system (Athlon X2 4800 w/2GB RAM) has been getting awfully slow when processing large files. For example, burning multi-GB files (I alternate between Nero and ImgBurn), copying large files across my LAN, extracting files with WinRAR or running a repair job with QuickPar. The 'Available Physical Memory' figure under the Performance tab in Task Manager can drop to 20MB or so (20,000--the value is expressed in KB), and as soon as these operations stop, it'll jump right back up to maybe 1.2GB, where it more typically hovers in day-to-day operations. The pagefile usage graph typically stays at around maybe …

64-bit XP OS uses memory more efficiently than 32-bit?

Gurus, Is it true that a 64-bit XP OS will get more out of a 4GB RAM system than a 32-bit XP OS will? In other words, the 64-bit version will use the RAM more efficiently? I imagine the same efficiencies are true for Windows server? -- Spin

OT - Excellent unofficial drivers for SoundBlaster in Vista x64
by Guest Carlos- 8 replies
Creativelabs has done a lousy job providing good drivers for their soundcards. I have been successfully using modded drivers taken from the Vista forums at Creative for many months. The last one is really something. For those who own the lowly Audigy Value SE/LS & SB Live 24bit (like me!) this set of drivers converts them to X-Fi Xtremes. http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=29663 Hard to believe but I installed them a couple of hours ago and it has supported the heavy gaming tasks imposed by my sons and my tests with Dolby 5.1 sound.
