Games Folder after SP1
by Guest John Adams- 5 replies

I know there are other posts floating around about Vista not remembering folder's view settings, but I have a very specific issue. Since SP1, the Games folder no longer shows the Preview Pane. If I turn it on, it turns it on for all windows. I can not find a way to get around this problem. Does anyone know of a solution? - John

Stopping Programs From Rotating Cores on Multi-Core System
by Guest Ronis- 3 replies

I have XP Pro x64 on an Intel quad core processor. When I am playing multiple simultaneous instances of Everquest, I notice on the Task Manager that the different Everquest sessions are being rotated (seemingly randomly) between different cores, and occasionally, they ALL end up on the SAME core, resulting in everything freezing. My computer can easily handle 3-4 Everquest sessions on a single core, just not 6-7. Ive tried to manually set each instance's affinity via the task manager but its not allowed - and I dont know why. Im using Wineq2 and have the innate Everquest affinity setting to off. No combination of Affinity Settings within both Everque…

Hi all: I am running Vista x64 on an ASUS P5 motherboard which says it can support up to 8 GB RAM. I have 2x2 GB chips in memory bank one, and 2x1 GB chips in memory bank 2 for a total of 6 GB. However when I start the machine, in the BIOS the memory shows up as 5056 MB, and in Vista I show 4991. Can anyone make some suggestions? Thanks. John.

I have windows xp x64 edition I have just installed radeon 9250 Installation went smooth. Just in case I installed drivers from the website anyway. During that installation it said Missing WIA No idea as to what that is. Anyway it finished the installation without stopping so I think it's not that critical. Ok now for the biggest question of them all. When I change the monitor from the intergraded motherboard vga to the radeon my monitor stops responding. What should I do?

XP x64 Secondary HD and Drivers
by Guest waruta- 2 replies

Hello All, Been searching the archives for a while and I still can't find the answer i'm looking for; when I installed my second 500 GB hard disk, I went to Disk Management and everything went smoothly except for the fact that I am only left with 465GB of space. I understand that I won't be able to use the full 500 gigs but losing 36gb seems a bit excessive to me. Are there any workarounds or did I do something wrong? Also , when installing certain devices such as a smart card reader or usb data link, they don't support the x64 version of Xp I'm running, and I can't get them to work, even if I try and install the vista drivers or install them t…

Judge greenlights lawsuit against Microsoft By Kelly Fiveash → More by this author 25 Feb 2008 11:04 Sticky issue of deceptive 'Vista Capable' labels A US judge has given the go-ahead for consumers to file a class action lawsuit against Microsoft for providing misleading information about Windows XP computers being able to run Vista. Redmond’s “Windows Vista Capable” labels first appeared on computers in April 2006, even though the firm’s latest operating system didn’t get a general release until January last year. According to Associated Press the class action lawsuit, which was certified by US district judge Marsha Pechman last Friday, will spe…

Storport drivers

Hi Team , We are using the Storport on windows 64 servers and we need to uninstall the drivers for the changer and drive to make the scsi pass move thorugh it and to make it work But on 32 bit servers , we need to have the drive and changer enabled and need to have drivers installed to make it work coded 64bit Windows to only support Storport With Windows 64bit the IBM tape drive driver always seems to create a problem for ARCserve. Here is the difference between 64 and 32 bit Windows. 64bit – IBM tape drive driver causes problems 32bit – IBM tape drive driver does not. So with 32bit it is possible to have the client lo…

Importing a .reg file in 32-bit and 64-bit
by Guest nuttinbutspam@gmail.com- 2 replies

I need to import a .reg file on 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The .reg file contains settings for a 32-bit-only program. In a 32-bit environment the settings are stored at "HKLM/Software/CompanyName/ ProductName", but on a 64-bit system, the settings are stored at "HKLM/ Software/Wow6432Node/CompanyName/ProductName". I understand the idea of the "Wow6432Node" registry key: 32-bit apps in a 64-bit environment that read and write to the "Software" key, are automatically redirected (behind the scenes) to the "Sofware/ Wow6432Node" key. Unfortunately, this seems to only work when the 32- bit app itself accesses the registry. Is there a mechanism in the .reg file sy…

Hello! 1. Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533) stops IE7 (in Windows Vista x64 Ultimate) from showing web pages. Uninstalling the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533) resumes IE7 showing web pages. 2. Any version of Agent mail.ru (messenger, e-mail notifier, http://agent.mail.ru) cannot connect in the Windows Vista x64 Ultimate. I checked everything the Agent mail.ru support suggested. The support does not know what to suggest any more. Best regards, Dima

modify "Close Group" behavoir in X64?
by Guest MsFriendly- 5 replies

When I choose Close Group in X64 it makes me manually open each window and choose whether to save or close. If I have 20 instances of Notepad open this takes forever as you can imagine. Is there anyway to change the behaviour so it pops up the next instance after I've decided what to do? I believe this was default behaviour of Close Group in all other versions of Windows.

Unauthorised Program Activities
by Guest Maverick Mike UK- 0 replies

I am having an issue an application that uses FTP to connect to a site to download messages. When running the application it will only connect to the FTP site when it is ran as the local administrator despite the user being a member of the local admin group. As of yet I have not found a reason for this but think it could be related to a feature that protect unauthorised process’s. If I use the Run As command on the ftp program and uncheck the 'Protect my computer from unauthorised activity' the app will run otherwise it just hangs. if you choose local administrator and enter the password the program will run and download files. Does anyone have an id…

Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
by Guest Frederick- 5 replies
I have a Dell Axim X50v with Windos Mobile 5, which I was hoping to have connect and syncronize with my new Win Vista desktop. All the literature says that I don't install ActiveSync on my desktop, but that Windos Mobile Desktop Center should do all the connecting (magically). Unfortunately all I get is a simple "Error" message in the Windows Mobile panel (and that is all it does say "Error"!). Meanwhile my Dell Axim indicates Connected. Needless to say they are not on speaking terms and nothing is being syncronized. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Fred.

Windows Vista SP1 Friendly Advice
by Guest John Adams- 4 replies
I was one of the people who got SP1 for Vista x64 through Windows Update the other day. The install went fine and my computer came back afterwards without any trouble. However, in the days that followed, I noticed that one of my Excel files was corrupted and I had to restore it from backup. I also noticed that I had a USB hardware error in Device Manager and once while installed Call of Duty 4, I had a BSOD. Also, I noticed that sometimes my system would take a longer-than-usual time to read files from my second and third hard drives. I checked into it and came to the conclusion that my INF drivers were not properly reinstalled during the SP1 change…

This is O.T., but I just recieved my MSDN mail with a notice of upcoming events that apparently includes a promotional kit, of which the VS would interest me a great deal. Now, these kits being promotional - does that hold any limitations appart from the standard 'non disclosure agreement' - or whatever, could one expect to be allowed to publish software in various ways, and for any lenght of time? Not that I am thinking of being able to sell, or actually build a profitable business around it - just showing off, you know! Creativity needs an outlet! Tony. . .

Vista Defrag
by Guest Don- 10 replies

Hey gang, Have been messing around with Vista 64 bit Ultimate since getting installed yesterday to dual boot with XP Pro. Parts of it are pretty neat, parts will take me some getting used to. I use Executive Software Diskeeper, in my XP Pro install. I can use it to defrage the drive my Vista install is on as well. I am curious about the Vista built in defragger, when I go into " computer", and right click a hard drive, click on tools, then defrag, it states it is defragging " disks " , ie plural. Is it defragging just the drive I selected, or is it defragging all my partitions? Thanks, Don
