Vista SP1 kills and maims security apps, utilitiesCheck security software before installing By Kelly Fiveash → More by this author Published Friday 22nd February 2008 14:51 GMT Green Computing - Where do you stand? Microsoft has admitted that Windows Vista service pack one (SP1) renders useless a number of well-known third party security products. Redmond said in a knowledge base article yesterday that due to "reliability" issues with Vista SP1, it has been forced to prevent some security products from running after the service pack is installed. So, customers who currently have versions of Jiangmin KV Antivirus or Trend Micro's Internet Security on th…

Convert new HP 32bit Vista home premium to Vista 64bit Ultimate
by Guest Chris Cowles- 12 replies

I just bought a new HP a6350z AMD dual-core computer with 32bit Vista Home Premium. I own a full retail license for Ultimate which is installed on an older computer. I plan to remove it (or whatever's necessary to free the license) so I can install the 64bit ultimate license on the new HP. How disruptive is that? The new computer is almost unchanged from getting it out of the box. I uninstalled Symantec AV and installed Windows OneCare for which I already have a license. I installed the driver for my wireless HP AIO c7820 which HP describes as being compatible with Vista 64. Not much else is personalized and I haven't invested much time in it. Am I bas…

by Guest Don- 5 replies

Hey gang, Ok , now that I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed and running good, on a different hard drive, are there any tips for leaning it out a little? I am new to Vista, and have heard it has some bloat , are there any services , background things going on, that I can disable to get it a littler leaner and meaner so to speak? I have disabled indexing to allow for faster searching, so far that is all I have done. Thanks for any tips, -- Don

Vista x64 SP1 just went live on WU. If you see any optional device driver updates for your system on WU you may have to complete the device driver update(s) before WU offers you SP1. I did.

Hey gang, I have just received Vista Ultimate, along with a new hard drive to put it on, to dual boot with my current XP Pro 32 bit. I did a google search to try and do some reading on this. I have read , of an issue with restore points being deleted with this configuration, but believe there is a way to edit the boot file to keep this from happening? I have also read there is a program, Vista BootPro, that would be good to use for this, rather than the built in Vista boot manager? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Vista SP1 no longer available to install? Need help!
by Guest Levi- 3 replies

I originally went to install SP1 for x64 Vista, but canceled the install programt before even starting due to other programs running on my machine at the same time. Upon canceling the installation I ended up getting error code Code4C7. I closed the update window thinking that I would go back and run windows update after I was done using my other programs. But now, when I go into windows update, it doesn't even give me the option to install SP1. I check the Update history and it has on there the failed attempt to install SP1, but does not give me the little check box in order to install it. Is there somewhere that I can download SP1 and bypass windows updat…

Is Ubuntu better than Vista?

Dell charges more for Ubuntu than Vista Open sorcery By INQUIRER Newsdesk: Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 1:09 PM DELL HAPPILY ANNOUNCED a new Ubuntu-powered system a couple of days ago. The penguin posse was delighted, of course, until it found that the once-direct only seller seems to be charging more for machines sporting the open source OS than for those sporting Vista. As far as we can tell, on Dell's cumbersome UK website the price of the cheapest Inspiron 1525 with Vista home premium is £359. The same specification machine with Ubuntu is £379. There is a cheaper version of the Ubuntu system but it has a lower specification. Here are so…

windows update causes unbootable pc?
by Guest ivymike- 5 replies

Last night before shutting down for the night (12-Feb-2008), I noticed that Vista x64 wanted to install some updates - I didn't look to see what they were, I just told it to install before shutting down, then left. I have a still-working UPS on the machine, so it's unlikely that the power failed while it was updating. This morning the PC wouldn't boot - it never even got to the black screen with the little swish-bar. Using the DVD to restore the prior system configuration brought it back to life, and it has rebooted successfully since, but I've told it not to install the updates it's asking about. Now i'm worried about the current batch of updates - I'…

What is Windows XP 64 bit good for?
by Guest 64bitsucks- 14 replies

I've had Windows XP 64 for a little over a year and I still can't figure out why the hell I bought it because that thing is useless. I only foud two lousy drivers out of about 27 that I need, many 32 bit software won't work with it, 32 bit utilities won't work with it so you bet I am pissed. Likewise, I had to look for 64 bit codecs in places I never heard of. I can't figure out how you chipheads fead each other in this newsgroup with no content whatsoever. That is beyond me :(

Vista slower than XP

February 20, 2008 Despite SP1, Vista is still slower than XP Filed under: Hardware , Productivity , Windows Vista So here I am, sitting in the main terminal at Dubai International, killing time during my six hour layover by sifting through the headlines surrounding the release Vista SP1. Over at a competitor's site, two prominent bloggers are really going at it, posting contradictory benchmark results that show Vista to be either a) on par with Windows XP or b) much slower than XP on the same hardware. In each case, the bloggers are focusing on areas in which Microsoft claims to have improved Vista performance with SP1: file copies, network transfers…

Vistax64 not connecting automatically to internet via yukon 88e800
by Guest ketzazu- 7 replies

I have an Asus A8V with an integrated Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller. This card will not connect to the internet no matter what kind of drivers I use when I was using Linksys routers. Last week, I connected it to an Westell DSL modem and I was shocked to connect to the internet ( the wireless dongle that I used for over a year to access the internet vanished and my kids could not tell me why). The problem is that after rebooting Vista Ultimate 64 bit, the computer will not connect to the internet again unless I roll back the drivers or update the drivers for the ethernet controller. it seems that the computer does not re…

Missing Memory Diagnostic Tool
by Guest jeffreywilens- 6 replies

I have a new system (30 days) and am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. After experiencing several BSODs I decided to run Vista Memory Diagnostic. However, everytime I try to run it, I get an error message on the screen where it would start. \boot\memtest.exe is missing or corrupt If, somehow, the memory testing file is corrupt, what's the best way to just reinstall that without having to wipe out all my programs, files, etc. I have already tried system restores and "start" restores (or whatever that tool is called in the recovery console.
