New Install Keeps Failing
by Guest Ptera Tech- 2 replies

My boss installed Ubuntu and XP64 on this machine (This is an EVGA nForce 4 Mainboard with AMD Athlon64 with one SATA drive) but there was no room on the working (Yes XP was working) XP partition to install anything on it. So using the install program from the CD I removed all partitions then created/formatted one NTFS partition. Upon first reboot from the install program the screen said: ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt. I ran the install again on existing file system and got: NTLDR is missing. The system cannot boot. I just completed a PC-Doctor diagnostic with no errors found. I ran the install again on the existing file system and got: Windows could not s…

DVD-ROM - Driver not recognized
by Guest TJD- 3 replies

After of year of working, my external USB DVD burner would not load the device driver. The hardware was correctly recognized in Vista 64-bit (as well as in my BIOS). I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, using other USB ports, trying to update driver, and booting in Safe Mode. Nothing worked. Odd thing is that when I did check to update the driver Vista reports I have the latest version of the driver installed. So, I assumed it was a bad drive and bought a new one today (different brand) - same thing. Any solutions or ideas on this? Thanks, Tom

This situation occurs with both IE and Firefox. My OS is Vista Ultimate 64 bit, patch1. I am using Vista Mail. When I am on the Web and I select a e-mail link, I am not getting a new email box. I do have my Windows Mail Inbox come to the screen, but a New Mail box with the address filled in, from the web site, as expected is not happening. I have been through "Set Default Programs" and Windows Mail is selected as my default. It certainly is possible that there is something in: Associate a file type or protocol with a program" or Set program access and computer defaults" that I am missing. But, when I click on a Web Link to email, The Windows (or…

Set default problem

I have a problem setting my e-mail default program to Turnpike on Vista ultimate 64 bit. Turnpike is set as my e-mail link in customize start menu. I have tried running the program default setup, but I can't find turnpike in the list of available programs. I reply yes to set turnpike as default e-mail, news and address book as turnpike starts but every time I open turnpike I have to reset it as default. I have tried setting turnpike up in default programs but it is not listed and I can't find away to add it to the list of programs. Any help would be appreciated. T.I.A. -- John

64-bit Server 2008 for a Windows Printer server
by Guest Jim Helfer- 4 replies

I am buying a new machine to be our printer server, and we are considering whether to go with 32- or 64-bit 2008. The server will most likely be a HP Proliant DL 360. It will host about a dozen printers, including plotters. We have some people doing big production print jobs that take a lot of time, so I would really like to increase printing performance. Is there any advantage to going to 64 bit for this role? If so, would adding memory over 4 gig help at all? thanks Jim

I have just got interested in 64 bit operating system. So I understand that you need a 64 bit OS. However, does the motherboard & other hardware need to be 64 bit specific? TIA -- _______________________________ In Christ's matchless name ted n6trf

When I go to my system properties though, it doesn't say anything about SP1. I'm tempted to go get sp1 and install it, but I just want to know, did those 65 updates when I installed vista come with sp1 or not? thanks

Delayed Write Failed
by Guest BroncoAvsFan- 5 replies

I am runing Windows XP Prof Ver. 2002. Yesterday I downloaded SP 3. First off, I know little about computers. I recently installed a new Western Digital SCSI 500 GB hard drive. It installed and formated without problem other than I could only do this as a dynamic Disk. After transfering all files to this new drive (317 GB) and thinking everinthing was fine, I erased the old files from 2 other hard drives they were on. About a day later I got this error: {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\LanmanRedirector (F:\$Mft). The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardwar…

Remote Desktop

Recently we have had several people experience a difficult time connecting to remote desktop. I had the trouble a couple weeks ago from home when trying to connect to my computer at work, but suddenly it started to work again, but I'm not convinced it was anything I did. Now someone else in our company is having a hard time connecting. When he tries to connect he receives the message that it cannot find the computer, as if the computer at work has been turned off. However, if you remote to his computer within the building, you can connect just fine. Both boxes are checked within the Remote Desktop area. It's only when you are outside the building…
