Every time I try opening the Help and Support Center, I receive an error message Saying "Internet Expllorer cannot download / from help. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." I am connected to the internet via wireless broadband at the time this happens. Can anyone help me on this issue to resolve it?

Microsoft pulls Vista update By INQUIRER Newsdesk: Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 6:57 PM AFTER AN UPDATE to Vista sent some PCs bananas, Microsoft pulled it, although it hasn't yet produced code to fix those bananas PCs. "Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid further customer impact while we investigate possible causes," said Volish Vista bogger Nick White, yesterday. White said the bananas PCs belonged to "a small number of customers in unique circumstances". He added: "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make the update av…

How to achieve actual use of my full 4 GB RAM,
by Guest E Pericoloso Sporgersi- 13 replies

and not be hornswoggled by Vista SP1 (32bit)? My Vista Home Premium 32bit reports just 3 GB RAM while I have 4. Microsoft claims that Vista SP1 (32bit) will report the full amount of RAM present, 4 GB in my case. But if I understand correctly, Vista SP1 will actually keep on using only 3 GB RAM minus the graphic card's memory. This means that Vista Home Premium SP1 (32bit) on my portable will still use only 2.5 GB RAM, because the graphic card has its own dedicated 512 MB. That's 1.5 GB RAM just sitting there idle. The solution would be to install Vista 64bit. But ... 1. Can my x86 CPU handle that? (Packard Bell Easynote http://support.packardbell…

Boot freezes
by Guest Charles- 6 replies

My, and many others, computer freezes during the scroll portion of the boot. It only does it if the computer was shut down normally. If restarted or forced to boot from boot menu it will boot normally. I have eliminated any chance of a heating or warm up parts failure. 1. What difference is there in the start up files? 2. if exact same boot files then what is the diff. in the process?

Back to multi-booting the RAID - again. . .
by Guest Tony Sperling- 11 replies
Over the years, I've kept my multi-boot configurations in a fairly short leash and they've come and gone with regularity. When I set up the present 64bit system, I wanted a RAID and I wanted to keep it reasonably clean with just the XP x64 and one Linux (to keep abreast with RAID support on Linux). Things got complicated when several of the simulators I depend on turned out to install, but not run in a 64bit environment and soon I fell back to spinal reactions and I had three systems booting on that RAID. All was well and completely uneventful for the last couple of years, but RAID support on Linux is closely attached to the Uncertainty Principle (unless …

Is Windows XP 64bit going down the way OS/2 did?
by Guest Greg Lamonte- 21 replies

My favorite OS was OS/2. I like Windows XP 64 and it looks to me as if it's going to disappear just like OS/2 did because of lack of hardware support. Isn't that a shame? :(

x64 Windows Updates
by Guest John Adams- 4 replies

Is it possible to install x86 updates on an x64 version of Windows Vista? I ask because I tried using Office Live Workspace today and it installed three hotfixes during its installation. These hotfixes did not specify that they were for x64 systems in their title, so it made me nervous. Does anyone know? Thanks, John

Ext HD triggers new hardware, drivers not loaded
by Guest GettingOld- 3 replies

I have had recent problems installing external hd's on Vista 64. I have run into problems with USB2.0 as well as eSATA. The drive will appear under the device manager under "disk drives". But it triggers the new harware wizard, which can't load a driver, which leads to an unknown device being listed. Even when the unknown device is listed the drive still appears under "disk drives". The drive wil appear under disk manager, but it is unaccesable. You can remove the partition but can not change the drive letters or format. Drive manager has a message asking to refresh or restart which has no effect. The drive works fine under XP. X…

Printer problem with Vista x64, maybe
by Guest Wylee- 8 replies
Geeks, I have Vista Ultimate x64 as my primary computer networked to a Windows XP computer. The Vista computer is always on and the XP computer is only on when required (daughter playing with it). My printer is a HP Deskjet 6540 and is attached to the Vista computer. My problem is I cannot seem to print properly from the XP computer (I constantly get a mirror image). I have done all the checks and no, mirror image is not ticked (and if I do tick it, same result). I have used the latest drivers from HP on the XP computer and the Vista built-in driver for the Vista computer. If I connect the printer to the XP computer directly, it prints correctly, it onl…

Question on installing Vista 64 bit with 4gb of ram?
by Guest Don- 12 replies
Hey gang, I am about to order Vista Ultimate, and plan on installing the 64 bit version and dual booting with XP Pro. I will also get another sata hard drive, to dedicate to the 64 bit Vista install. I have read on some forums, where 64 bit Vista may need a certain hotfix from Microsoft, to be able to run with 4gb of ram installed. Is this pretty much the case all around, for those with 4gb of ram? I have seen where it is recommended, when installing 64 bit Vista on a system with 4gb of ram, to remove 2gb, install Vista 64 bit, then get the hotfix and install it, then add the other 2gb of ram. Is this what I should plan on doing, before even attempt…

Transfer License from 32-bit to 64-bit?
by Guest Joseph Ezell- 13 replies
I have a PC running Windows XP 32-bit. Separately, I have a 6-month evaluation version of Windows XP x64 waiting to be installed on a new 64-bit computer. I know the license key from the 32-bit version cannot be used on the 64-bit version. Is there a way (with Microsoft's permission) to deactivate the license from my old 32-bit version and transfer it to the newer 64-bit version without having to purchase a new license? If so, whom do I contact to make this happen? Thank you. Joe

WoW X64-Need command
by Guest Sam Steinhauser- 6 replies

I just moved to Vista X64 Ultimate and I and totally thrilled compared to my past trials witn XP X64. Everything works great. Well a couple of USB devices are not up to speed but I have found a work around. My MS 6000 keyboard has a button set by default to "Lock Systam." About a year ago someone in the forums gave me a command I put in that made this button put my system to sleep and I didn't write it down or manage to save it as I did a clean install. I know when you click the sleep icon it just executes a simple command. What is it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam

Server 2003 X64 or not?
by Guest clucas009- 4 replies
I have never worked with the x64 version of Server 2003 so I am not sure if there are any major differences in the installation or management of it. From what I have read there isn't but there may be some application support issues. The server is: Windows 2003 R2 x32 standard server 2x dual core Xeon (5130 - 2Ghz) 4GB ram Currently we are running Virtual PC on the server and several (3) clients connect to it via a thin client solution (PC Expanion devices). The VPC has been allocated 2GB of ram which leaves 2GB for the Host OS. Now we are looking at adding another VPC for a different group of users (3-5) that will also connect via the thin…

Need help with 64 bit
by Guest Jake Malone - MVP/MUT- 2 replies

I'm extremely unhappy with 64 bit Not much works. I can't compile very much of anything, third party apps are pretty much a total write off. I can't install Nero, my very expensive scanner does NOT work under 64bit, Macromedia stuff does NOT work (9 out of 10 websites I visit I get redirected to the Macromedia website and yes, I've downloaded and installed it, it works in firefox) EVERY stinking time I start firefox it tells me it can't start because the profile is already in use then when I try to make a new one it says I don't have permission to do so.. There's plenty more but I'll not waste the time on it all.. I want to go back down to 32 bit. …

Unzipping files in XP64
by Guest Seanb72- 7 replies

Hi, can anyone give me any advice on the following. The company I work for has recently installed some new CAD pc's that run xp 64bit. The problem is that the users are unable to unzip compressed files that they are sent in the way that they could on their old xp 32 bit pc's. Any suggestions or info on why this is the case with the 64bit version and how can we resolve it as they need to be able to unzip files. Many thanks Sean

My system: OS: XP64 CPU: AMD x2-6400 RAM: Corsair XMS (8gbs @ 4x2gb) VIDEO: two BFG 7900 GT w/ 512mb ddr2 in SLI HDs : one programs, one data - both sata2's 500gbs each MB: ASUS M2N32-SLI Current Pagefile set to system managed size. My question: since i am running 8gbs ram, do i need a large virtual file? i use my computer for graphic editing (adobe CS3 + Illustrator) and online Gaming like World of Warcraft, LoTR, Starcraft2, etc... it seems when I was running xp64 with 4gbs of ram, and an amd x2-4600 it seemed to run faster; i upgraded the CPU and doubled the ram when i upgraded from CS2 to CS3 more ram and faster processor works great in CS3…

Datacenter OS Install License Options
by Guest jimk - AFCDS- 5 replies

When installing MS WS 3k3 Datacenter R2 (per processor licensing) I get the prompt to select whether the licnesing is per servers connected or per users/devices connected. I was expecting there to be a prompt of "how many processors" or something of that nature. Can anyone clarify this and/or shed some light on this? I called two MS support lines and they couldn't answer me. Thanks!
