Need to change Deflation/Compression level "zipping" in Windows XP
by Guest WeanieBoo- 4 replies

I need to change the deflation/compression level to none when "zipping" a folder in Windows XP Pro. I am using the built-in Zip utility for the OS. How can I make it zip the files in a folder so my karaoke software can read the MP3+CDG from a zip folder without compressing it? I tried third party zipping, but the player does not recognize it either?? The player recognizes zip folder as a file to play, but not if they are compressed. The files within cannot be deflated. Please help me?? Thanks

Perpetual Vista reboot on start-up
by Guest Mike- 13 replies

It's as simple as that: My Vista Business is perpetually rebooting as it trys to start up. It gets halfway through the loading screen, the scolling bar freezes, and the machine reboots. Here's the hardware situation: -Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 Motherboard -4gb Corsair DDR2 -AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ -GeForce 7600GT PCI-E x16 -WD 160gb IDE HDD -WD 160gb SATA HDD (Windows Drive) -SATA Lightscribe CD/DVD-RW -Logisys 480W PSU The problem arose after my old DFI Infinity Mobo died. The replacement is the above listed Gigabyte Mobo. I've upgraded to the latest bios, cleared the CMOS, tried it with only 1 stick of memory, and it still does the same thing. I've tr…

The big problem I'm having with Norton at the moment is staying with it, which all things considered I'm happy to do. I'm told I have to renew my free subscription, but whenever I try I'm told, "This file is too large to open using AOL. Please open this file using another application." What should my next step be?

Basic RAID question. . .
by Guest Tony Sperling- 20 replies
Hi all! I am most probably about to embark on a re-installation on my RAID0 based system, involving removing the 'dual-boot', after (what?) some 30 successful months. It occurs to me that a mirroring setup - appart from being slower, may posses the added benefit of allways maintaining a non-fragmented mirror copy of all the data. Is this correct? It seems to me that since all work is relegated to the one 'image' that the mirror should be kept 'Pristine'? Or, is the mirror actually maintaing the fragmentation of the original? I do realize that this may depend heavily on the mirroring algorithm. It is very early in the next morning here, so please…

Snipping Tool stops working
by Guest jaartee- 0 replies
When one clicks on the snipping tool, nothing happens. If one types "snipping tool" in the search, the .exe comes up; you click on it, nothing happens. When I was beta testing (2+ years ago through today), the same issue happened. No rhyme or reason, it just quit. The Escalation support escalated to developers. Then the release came out, and the clean install had it working again. HOWEVER, this time it has quit *only* on my 64-bit Vista Ultimate machine. Two dual core intel processors, 8GB RAM, 1TB+ hard drive (<600MB free). So, has anyone else had the Snipping Tool quit? Having gotten used to it, the loss of the convenience is a severe anno…

Odd Icon during log off.
by Guest XS11E- 12 replies

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 and switched from Pegasus Mail (latest) to Thunderbird for email for various reasons (I miss Peggy but it's no longer usable for me, sigh.) I've removed Pegasus via the add/remove thingy <- sorry to get so techy!) and also deleted all the Pegasus mail files on the partition where they were kept (after importing all the mail messages, of course) but I still see a Pegasus Icon in the systray during shutdown or log off. The Pegasus Icon in the systray normally appears only when Pegasus Mail is opened and minimized so that may be a clue? What have I failed to remove? It's not a problem but it does indicate that I prob…

dotNET 1.1 SP1 install error on 2003 Server 64-bit Datacenter SP2
by Guest Jason Gurtz- 7 replies

SQL 2005 64-bit and IIS also installed on the machine with latest SP and patches. Here's the error when you run the installer: This setup is not supported on 64-bit versions of Windows XP So I extracted it and ran it like this: D:\tmp\dotNET1.1\dotnetfx>msiexec /i netfx.msi /lvx* d:\tmp\dotNET11.log I got a little bit more output but still nothing any more useful to my eye. We need to install this due to a third party application from UAI Here's some of the output of the log surrounding the error: MSI © (E8:F8) [16:17:49:824]: PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding SystemFolder.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8 property. November DirectX Redist released
by Guest Carlos- 0 replies

MSFT has released its DirectX End-User Runtimes for November 2007 (release date is yesterday). http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1a2393c0-1b2f-428e-bd79-02df977d17b8 Not an imperative update but doesn't hurt to install it either. Useful if you are a gamer and run into a game that didn't include the updated DX files it needs. Applies to XP x64 as well as Vista x64. A 64 megs download. :) Carlos

Opening Attachments in XP 64-bit
by Guest scurr3165- 2 replies

I'm using Windows XP Pro 64-bit and Outlook Express version 6. When I click a link from an email it opens up IE 64-bit version instead of 32-bit version. A lot of web pages now use Adobe Flash and they haven't put out a 64 bit version yet so some of my content I am trying to view is not shown. Is there a way to have links open up in 32 bit instead of 64 bit? Thanks Scott C.

So, here is a question - I'm running XP64 (yeah, still...). I can't run any of my 16 bit apps. However, today I installed VirtualPC2007, and installed Win2000. From there, 16 bit apps work. Why? What is it about XP64 that 16 but apps don't run, yet I can run them from a virtual pc running in XP64?

Re: Drivers for wireless NICs/Adpaters?

Re: Drivers for wireless NICs/Adpaters? Theo, how do you make that work? I have the same model wireless card as you (although it's called G+) and I can't make it work in XP X64 Pro. You say it is automatically detected by the OS, but I only get 'new hardware' detected under network controllers and no automatic or manual install of drivers (including all the ones I've found at the Belkin website or driverguide dot com) has worked.
