some type of scandisk?
by Guest Ralph- 4 replies

Hi, Just a silly question- I've made file backups to DVD, and now cannot copy the files back. Is there anything like the old MS scandisk for Vista Ultimate 64? or do I have to go to some file recovery program? The disk directory reads on almost all my disks, but not all the files will come back. Thanks.

4GB Ram not showing missing on Vista 64
by Guest Spilt_Milk- 3 replies

For Windows Vista to use all 4 GB of memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed, the computer must meet the following requirements: • The chipset must support at least 8 GB of address space. Chipsets that have this capability include the following: • Chipsets that support AMD processors that use socket F, socket 940, socket 939, or socket AM2. These chipsets include any AMD socket and CPU combination in which the memory controller resides in the CPU. I have a AMD 2222SE Dual-Core @ 3Ghz • The CPU must support the x64 instruction set. The AMD64 CPU and the Intel EM64T CPU support this instruction set. This is a AMD 64 CPU • The BIOS …

Yearning for using the 64-bit WMP because the lack of decoders? The new year has brought us an x64 version of the freeware multiformat audio/video decoder "ffdshow". Download it from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=229162 Latest version from author "albain" is dated Jan 8th, 2008 I had been using this other version: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=214245&release_id=523000 from another author, but that one has not been updated since July 2007. It will allow you to play almost any audio/video compressed file both in WMP and Media Center. I must admit that I have tr…

Hi, I have a 32bit application that needs a 32bit Oracle driver...but I can only install 64 bit oracle drivers... Is there a way of installing a 32 bit driver on 64 bit XP ... ? Database is XE (ie 10.02) running on Vista 32. Other machines use 9i drivers quite happily. SQL drivers work in both 32 and 64 bit mode so these work ok with my 32 bit app, as does Access. Thanks Simon Zapata

Vista Ultimate OEM to 64bit?
by Guest Rob Hague- 1 reply
Hi, Bought a new notebook with 4GB of RAM and it came with Windows Vista Ultimate, 32bit. I went to the MS website to order the 64bit "Alternative Media", but was made aware that the offer didnt include/support OEM versions. I went to my OEM (as suggested) and was told that they did not stock it and the only way to upgrade to 64bit would be the buy the retail product..... which is unacceptable since i paid for the OS with the notebook, im not prepared to spend £300+ to get a license for something i already have. Perhaps its too much to hope for, but if someone from or representing Microsoft could give me any information on what to do that would be good…

Vista x64 sometimes locks up after application crash
by Guest KeithXP- 5 replies
I find Vista pretty stable all in all, but occasionally applications will crash, and I have experienced regular system-wide lockups following application crashes. These have occured in a few different apps, but I do not understand why a faulting application should cause Vista to completely hang. The only thing that works is the cursor, sometimes I can get Task Manager up, which shows CPU usage at over 90% idle and nothing untoward going on. I generally resort to a hard reset after watching my inanimate screen for 5 mins or so. Why is this happening? (Why does Vista let it happen?)

Please give us back the option of turning on/off driver signature
by Guest Disenchanted!- 7 replies

Please give us the option of turning on/off driver signature enforcement. What good does it do for Microsoft to take this feature away? I'm tired of having to weed through patches to find the one that takes away this ability each month. When someone pays $400+ for an applicaiton, they should have a little say in how they want (or actually NEED) it to run. I would love Vista, but it runs too much like Beta Software! A hack here, a crash there, drivers that are perfectly fine won't load because they aren't signed. This kind of reminds me of early 90s where Microsoft was locked in multiple anti-trust law suits. You have created a situation where …

by Guest stuartray- 5 replies

I recently deleted some software that had two copies of its self listed in the remove progams screen. Now whenever I start win xp x64 a screen comes up that says: "Ls delete program not found - skipping auto check." How do I get rid of this screen? I searched the startup files in msconfig, but could not find the batch file this screen is coming from. This happened before with a partition magic batch file, it only went away by reformating my HD and reinstalling everything -- Stuart

Error Message with rolling restarting
by Guest jbarn43- 8 replies

I keep getting this error message when playing a game that causes me to restart my computer. The error code is as follows: *** STOP: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000061, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF98000DC6180,0X0000000000000001) I built my computer and I was very careful in choosing fully Vista 64-bit compatible products. I didnt have a problem in the first month but soon after I get this blue screen of death. And unfortunately I bought OEM because I was on a budget and now I can't get the tech support I need without paying the $60. If anyone knows what this means and what I need to do to fix it please let me know.

XP 64bit on Dell Inspiron 530
by Guest Yousaf- 12 replies

Hi all Just bought a new Dell Inspiron 530 which came with a 32 bit Vista Basic. I want to remove this and clean install Win XP 64 as my main home desktop. Due to fact I work from home, it is imperative that Win XP 64 works like a production system. So far, I have read negative reviews about XP 64 bit. Mostly people mention driver issues. I just wanted to know if that is still the case. Is there anyone out there who has a similar system and has been using XP 64 bit? If so please reply to this post and let me know how you got on. There are a couple of proprietary GIS programs that I want to run on this desktop. People running these programs on their 64bit …

I've struggled with this for a while.. and now i think ive narrowed down the problem... With the Asus P5N32-sli se onboard Realtek audio.. it will not output dolby digital via the SPDIF via software players like PowerDVD, Windows Media Player etc on x64 Vista... On this same x64 Vista.. I can goto control panel.. audio.. playback devices.. the digital audio one.. properties and send Dolby test signals fine and clear to the receiver. But on the same x64 Vista, if i attempt to use PowerDVD (set to output over spdif).. it will freeze up.. I also tried WinDVD, it wouldnt freeze, but no audio was heard.. With Media Player it didnt output any sound Via sp…

an unhandled win32 exception occurred in lsass.exe [416]
by Guest Lou Zher- 0 replies

This morning I took my my laptop out of standby and almost immediately got "an unhandled win32 exception occurred in lsass.exe [416]" I'm running a fully patched install of WinXP 64bit -- including the patches from yesterday, one of which, MS08-002, patches lsass. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-002.mspx) Anyone else getting this behavior? Of course then Windows timebombed me, forcing a restart because lsass terminated. I actually tried to get VS2008 to connect the debugger to the process so I could get more info, but that didn't work. More details: When I took it out of standby it was connected to a second display and a net…

x64 vs x86.. surprising results in performance (x86 better)?
by Guest markm75- 7 replies
I could have sworn that previous things i had read, stated that running x64 vista was generally 5-20% slower than the x86 version? I ran some recent tests on my hardware with PerformanceTest v6.1 (an x86 version and x64 version)... My base computer is a 1.86GHZ dual core with 4gb memory and a geforce 8600GT pci-e x16 card.. the harddrives are all SATAII. I kept the software set identical on each machine, each machine was bare formatted and then only a handful of apps installed.. same configs on each: My basic Passmark rating on x86 was 472.2 and 575.1 on x64 (so x64 was 17.9% better overall). I did the run all tests option (and clicked cancel wh…

I decided to remove the rc1 trial sp1.After removal windows update had 14 updates for me.I had to hide sp1-rc1 as it found that again too.I installed the 14 updates & upon reboot everything seemed fine. I decided to see if sleep-mode would work now.I am happy to report my sleep mode works again.I don't know whether one of the updates fixed it or removal of the service pak fixed it. It will be interesting to see if when the Sp1 is released, whether it will or will not break my sleep mode..... Anyone else experience the same?

USB issues with 8 GB of RAM in x64
by Guest Matt- 1 reply

I have a Logitech USB webcam that worked great in XP x64 when I only had 2 gigs of ram. I recently tried out Vista x64, using 8 gigs of ram, and had video corruption (with the webcam). After researching the issue, I discovered KB entries 941600 and 936003 which provide patches for this issue in Vista (USB update rollup). This issue with webcams, Vista, and large amounts of memory is discussed heavily in the Logitech forums. Now I am back with XP x64, and 8 gigs of ram, and I am experiencing the same exact issue. I have tested with another XP x64 machine with the same amount of memory, with the same results. When I run with only 2 gigs, there is no pr…
