AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester is x86?
by Guest mcqueene@gmail.com- 4 replies

I was looking at a Vista upgrade from XP and I found something at the MSFT site that said you should check the environment variable named "processor_architecture" for a value of x64. If you have a value of x86 then you do not have a Vista 64 compatible cpu. But looking at the old notes at AMD for this cpu it sounds like it's 64 bit compatible. Any ideas who is correct? Should I just go 32bit Vista?

I recently bought an OEM Windows XP x64 version from Newegg.com. According to this post (http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64/archive/2006/05/29/97575.aspx), it shouldn't be a problem to do an upgrade if the trial version has not expired. My trial version has NOT expired. In fine fashion, nothing I touch ever goes according to plan. Here's where I'm at. I started the "upgrade" and I think there are 4-5 steps to complete the upgrade/installation. It got to the 3rd (I think) step where the files were being read from the XP x64 disk. The computer restarted and proceeded into a constant loop of restarting over and over again. So then decided to try the "repair…

My First Vista x64 Installation
by Guest Steve Winograd- 18 replies
Hi Everyone, I've been reading and learning a lot in this news group, and I want to describe my very good first experience with 64-bit Windows. I got a great price on a new Gateway GM5472, with 2.6 GHz Athlon 64 X2 dual core 5000+. After increasing RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB and replacing the 300W power supply with 500W, I wiped out Gateway's 32-bit Vista Home Premium and installed 64-bit Vista Ultimate. Installation was uneventful. 64-bit drivers for all of the built-in devices, including the AverMedia TV tuner, were available on Gateway's web site and from Windows Update. I added a PCI Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 150 TV tuner, which works with Vista's built-in dri…

Hang up on start up
by Guest SABander- 3 replies

Hey, I have been running Vista x64 for a long time, and suddenly tonight it hangs up every time it starts up. It gets past the log in, and you can see the desk top and then it just stops. No HDD activity, no mouse movement. However, the catchy thing is that it only does it under 1 account. I have 2 on my computer and the second works. Any suggestions?

64 bit Vista DVD install failure
by Guest River Guy- 4 replies
I Purchase Windows Vista Ultimate retail/box from Zipzoomfly.com. The 64 bit DVD would not boot, but the 32 bit would. Tried a different DVD drive with the same results. I want to install the 64 bit version. I contacted Zipzoomfly for a RMA and they said it was non-returnable. Will Microsoft replace? If so, does anybody have a phone number or a web link that I can use to resolve my issue? Any help is appreciated.

Windows Defender does not display 32-bit startup programs
by Guest Horia_RE- 0 replies

Hi. I am using Windows Vista Business x64 and I have the following problem with Windows Defender: if I go to Software Explorer>Startup Programs, there are no programs from the 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run' key listed there, but if I open the registry I can see them (i.e. QuickTime, AVG etc). Is there anything I can do to make them visible in Windows Defender?

Att John Barnes - CPU-Affinity software
by Guest Carlos- 2 replies

John (and the rest), I have found this utility for setting CPU-affinity, which I know causes you headaches every time you reboot Vista. http://www.koma-code.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=88&Itemid=93 It applies to Vista but I don't know if that includes x64 Vista, I have not tried it yet. "CPU-Control handles the CPU-affinity for multicore-systems (supports quadcores as well). Instead of running each process on both CPUs you can define it as you want it. For example, if you want to seperate the firewall and the anti-virus-software from the graphics-application. CPU-Controls offers five different ways to control the CPU-affini…

Upgrading from 32bit to 64bit
by Guest Bart- 3 replies
When I bought my new computer I ordered the 64bit version of windows vista with it, but I received the 32bit. After I had phoned the company where I bought my computer they talked me over keeping the 32bit version. But now I want the 64 bit version after all. On the Microsoft side I found the option to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit, which would only cost me the shipping costs, but when I entered my licence code but without any result. No updates possible. Is this because I have a version of windows which comes with a new pc? (Got Vista Home Premium, dutch version) What's the cheapest way to get a legal 64bit verion of Windows Vista?

Server 2008 32-bit?
by Guest John John- 3 replies

Someone asked me about this and I told them that it was my belief that Server 2008 would *not* be available in a 32-bit version, that it would only be available on 64-bit. I thought I read that here somewhere, did I dream about this or is it fact that Server 2008 will only be available 64-bit? Regards; John

Desktop Window Manager session manager freezes system
by Guest Anton- 11 replies
Hello! My system (Vista 64 bit) is suffering from freezes just after I login. I've nailed the problem down to the service "Desktop window manager session manager" and disabling it at startup does make my system stable again. As soon as I enable the service, it crashes. So what to do? I use an ATI graphics card and I have tried reinstalling the drivers for it, but it does not help. I even removed them totally and gave it a try, but it's still freezing. Right now, I'm thinking about the chances of reinstalling/restoring the exe file for the DWM. Is that possible? Will it help? I do not have any restore point to fall back on... What should I do? I'm not …

I am trying out the new Windows XP Pro x64 edition on a brand new build. I downloaded the trial and I am planning on using it on my new build. Does anyone know if this will work correctly or is the trial only good for a reinstall over a previous XP 32-bit OS. I do have the necessary hardware requirements for x64. Thanks!

Where is the software support for 64 bit Windows? 1 2 3
by Guest Joe Pasternak- 50 replies

It's been a little over one year that I've been using XP64. It is apparent to me by now that hardware drivers are hard to find for this 64bit OS furthermore, I have NOT seen any software boxes in the retail stores that claim to support Windows XP 64 bit. After Windows 2000, XP, comes Vista (the 32 bit version) so there is no mention whatsoever about XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit. Photoshop CS runs on XP but WILL NOT run on XP 64 It seems that Photoshop CS2 will run on XP 64 but the retail box doesn't say so. Some people do have luck running these types of high-priced software on xp64 bit and Vista ultimate but why won't the manufacturers admit one way o…

What is the User-Agent involved? (E.g. use Fiddler2.) Perhaps there is something confusing about it which makes WU assume it is the least capable browser? Try using a User-Agent spoof? (e.g. ref.
