Re: OneNote 2007, Groove 2007 doesn't fully work on Vista 64 I had meant to cross post this with the 64bit newsgroup and I just realized that it didn't work. AHCI issues
by Guest Netman- 3 replies
Thought I would try the AHCI option with my hard drive in Vista 64-bit. Turned on the option in the bios, installed motherboard drivers and everything seemed to work fine. However, periodically when trying to write to the drive I would receive an error indicating that the drive was "write protected." I went back to the bios, turned the option back to IDE and everything seems to be working fine. Not sure if this is a AHCI implementation problem on my motheboard (Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P using the onboard Gigabyte controller) OR a problem with Vista 64-bit. Any thoughts?

Windows Message to install a device
by Guest Denise- 0 replies
I continually receive a message from Microsoft that tell me that it has found new hardware and the Hartware Wizard pops up. I believe that Microsoft is referring to an external SATA hard drive. I assigned a letter to it, but I think it wants me to set up an array, but I'm not sure, and I don't want to set up a RAID array. -- Denise ~ If you don't know where you came from, you won't know where you're going.

BSOD, mismanaging system PTEs, x64/WinServer2003?
by Guest Roger Gelder- 7 replies
My power unit & graphics card went down. PCWorld(UK) fitted new graphics [GeForce 8400GS] and power unit. WEB access runs for ~5minutes & then BSOD, saying : "The driver is mismanaging system PTEs. disable BIOS memory options eg caching, shadowing STOP: 0x000000DA, etc" Google search yielded a MS Hotfix KB831899 but this failed : "different hardware platform" Other Googles suggest the NVIDIA driver is incorrect, hence the Hotfix. Yet another implies WindowsServer2003 is problem (this came with the ASUS board but is not used(?) since I use Win XP x64 SP2. System: ASUS A8N5X m/bd; Athlon x64 2.4GHz, twin 300GB h/ds, 2Gb RAM …

64-bit OS not recognized
by Guest JGundrey- 11 replies
I can't download music from Walmart.com because they say my OS is "not compatible". I think it thinks I'm running NT. Even on the Microsoft web site, I occasionally see a message saying "you aren't running Windows XP and cannot upgrade to SP2". I guess there's something in the OS that says it's Wndows 2003, or Windows NT or something that's non-XP. Any way around this? These little surprises are fouling me on 64-bit.

Dodgy USB Stick Handling
by Guest Computerflyer- 0 replies
(XP X64, all patches) I have a number of USB sticks that work fine and a few that work fine on X32 but not on X64. Device manager assigns a drive letter and I can operate on the USB using line mode in a command window (Isn't DOS wonderful!). In the GUI world the drive does not show in My Computer or anywhere else, except device manager as a disk, as it should. Event Viewer has an error 111 which MS Help indicates is a a problem with the device, not XP, but 32 bit versions of XP are happy with the device. Any idea where I might look for the disconnect between device management and the GUI? The problem sticks are by multiple USB vendors. Thanks :-)…

Wireless routers & their software for XP64
by Guest me@tarquin.demon.co.uk- 2 replies
- 248 views
I'm wanting to buy a wireless ADSL modem router of the pre N specification and have emailed the question of whether the h/ware and s/ware will work with XP 64 to one of the manufacturers (Buffalo) but would appreciate the views of members of this group based on their experience, hopefully. Buffalo's web site says they'll soon have support for Vista - but fails to mention whether 64 bit or just 32 bit. I would add that my only experience is of wired routers and that's limited. Charles

Visual C++ [any year / version] refuses to install
by Guest Bluescreen of Death- 7 replies

I recently got a friend of mine to construct this PC for me. He bought an OEM version of Vista x64 to put on it, and as such, I'm unable to talk directly to microsoft unless I want to pay like $60 per incident. So, here's my issue: I have two programs which require an updated version of Visual C++: Norton Internet Security and BioShock. I have tried installing both Visual C++ 2005 and 2008, but after I reboot, the programs still give me the same error messages, which, after being chased through tech support for both programs, leads me back to a needed VC++ update. My system specs are: Vista Home Premium x64 1.6GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor cl…

Core 2 processors and XP version
by Guest Kato- 3 replies
We are currently running Optiplex 745's with Core 2 6600 processors. We are looking to create a specification for procuring new PC's soon, probably with Core 2 Duo processors. According to Intel's website, and Wikipedia, both the Core 2 and Core 2 duo are 64 bit processors. Yet, I am almost certain that we are running 32 bit XP, and I am a bit confused as to how this can be. My system info says I have XP version 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600. Can someone explain to me what part of this I have wrong? How can 32 bit windows run on a 64 bit processor?

by Guest 1800yolk- 18 replies

I created a folder on my desktop, and when I went to rename it, I pressed "255" while holding the ALT key. Doing this makes the name blank. However, when I try to delete the folder, it doesn't let me. I've tried deleting it as an Administrator, and still have had no luck. I am running Windows 64bit Home Premium. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Brian

OT - Daylight savings in Argentina
by Guest Carlos- 5 replies
This is not specific to Vista x64 but to all MS OS's. After zillions of years with no Daylight Savings policy in Argentina, our brand new female president Cristina has decreed that we are going to have a Daylight Savings policy by a law in our country. Effective 0 hour of Dec 30 until 0 hour March 16, 2008 the clocks will be advanced 1 hour meaning that we will be moving from GMT -3 to GMT -2. Can MS release an update (I have seen updates for other countries lately) for Argentina? BTW this clock change is almost meaningless in the place where I live. Sun comes out at 4:00 AM and goes out close to midnight in summer. :) Carlos ---------------- This post …

Setting up mulitboot with Ultimate 32- & 64-bit
by Guest pk- 3 replies

Can I install a multiboot set-up with Vista Ultimate-32 and Ultimate-64? As Vista Ultimate is on the same machine but different partitions I can not use both versions at the same time so therefore can I not use the same product key for both installs? FYI, I purchased the full version and not the upgrade version. I have followed the instructions for "Install more that one operating system (multiboot)" in Windows Help and Support. Ater installing Ultimate-32 I ran Windows Update and then installed Norton and all my other programs and related documents. After a fresh reboot running Ult-32 I placed the Ult-64 DVD in the drive, double-clicked on the drive an…

In the first few hours, software got installed and placed their shortcuts as thye should, but then the problem came. If i remember right the problem came after i've solved the problem with "BOOTMGR" because i have SATA2 and an IDE harddisk. /Denno

Problems with ADI AD1888 Sound

This solution is for AD1888 Audio Chipsets with Windows Vista x64 Only ============================================== I have been searching for some time for a driver for the ADI AD1888 Onboard Soundmax surround sound card on my ASUS K8V-MX Motherboard. After a great deal of time trying to fix the problem of sound being erratic crackling excessive echo etc. reading a number of reviews of the motherboard stating that the onboard sound was AC-97 Compatible, I had the idea of trying an AC-97 Driver package for Windows Vista x64 (64bit) at 1st I thought that it did not work as I heard nothing from the speakers, but I had the Audio icon in the taskbar stating :…
