Getting started
by Guest Jon- 2 replies

I would like to try out this edition of Windows XP to take advantage of dual processing and threading. The problem is that the hardware drivers seem to be built for Windows XP (i.e. there is no specific mention of support for the x64 edition). Are drivers that run on Win XP 32 Bit compatible with the 64 bit edition?

Re: No audio on Intel 945 chipset Hi everyone, Really sorry to bring up an old thread, but I am experiencing this problem on my X64 SP2 machine. I can't apply that update because it says that SP2 already includes it, but my computer doesn't have any audio! I really need a fix for this as soon as possible. :) Please help! After installation of Windows XP 64bit, I noticed that I cannot read any USB device. All drivers for the mobo were updated and so is the BIOS. I get the following error message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. Even after trouble shooting I have no luck. Anybody? Thx.

Why does my computer not close down completely?
by Guest Wakey- 1 reply
I bought a new computer with Vista home premium installed. I have not installed much yet because I have been having problems 'restarting' and'shutting down'. In essence when i shut down or restart the computer it closes down to a certain point where the computer is still on but with no functionality i.e. no image being sent and no computer noise from the hardware working. At this point I have left it for over 30 minutes and in the end had to shut it down by pressing and holding the power button on the fron tof the computer. To restart I have to turn the power off at the back of the computer as if i don't all I get is the whirling sound of the fan at …

Dual Boot Vista & Server ??
by Guest Mike- 5 replies

Can anyone tell me if its possible to install Vista 64 and then install Server 2008 and switch between them using Vista boot manager or something like it ? I'd like to try out the test version of server but also use the PC for normal usage in Vista. The PC is not a business PC, just for home use and trying out different OS's. I realise I could do it with VMWare or maybe Virtual PC but thats another learning curve I;d rather not go to. Thanks for any constructive comments Mike

Hi, I have Windows X64 Pro. I recently installed Windows Media Player 10 and it's not working right. It stops playing at any random time. I want to uninstall it and reinstall it but it's not in Add/Remove Programs and the folder doesn't have an Uninstaller. How can I uninstall Media Player 10 so that I can reinstall it? -- Denise ~ If you don't know where you came from, you won't know where you're going.

New install XP Pro 64: video glitch on first boot
by Guest Ryan- 3 replies

Hello! I decided to create a dual boot 32/64 installation on a secondary computer in my home. Everything for the installation went as intended. However, upon initial boot from the hard drive into Windows, the welcome screen is chopped and distorted in horizontal segments of about half an inch apart. I can see the mouse pointer move around, but the pointer is split into about 15 pieces scattered across the screen. My hardware is an Athlon 64 4000+, 7800GTX and a Dell 2405 FPW LCD monitor. This hardware functions (and has been for over a year) flawlessly, so it is not a faulty hardware issue. I have trie plugging the DVI cable for the monitor into b…

oh.exe on 64bit
by Guest Mike- 3 replies
Hi - First, if there is a better newsgroup for this question, please advise. When I run oh.exe on our IA64 system I get the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>oh // // TIME: 2007-08-09 16:09 // MACHINE: P540 // BUILD: 3790 // OH version: built by: dnsrv_dev(v-smgum) // // OH2: Unable to query system object information. I have a feeling this is because the Windows Resource kit is not supported on 64 bit platforms. Are there any command line tools out there that can display handle information similar to oh.exe, that will run on 64 bit systems (IA64 in particular)? I have already tried MS/SysInternals handle.exe,…

No 1152 x 864 resolution option
by Guest Brian Weigand- 10 replies

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with an eVGA nVidia 8800 GT 512 MB (superclocked). My graphics driver is forceware 169.02. I have a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 997df CRT that I'm currently using. However, I am not given the option to change my resolution to 1152 x 864. It goes from 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 720 onwards and completely skips the resolution I want. I prefer the 1152 x 864 as it's sharper than the 1024 x 768 but yet the text isn't so small I have to strain my eyes to read it (as with 1280 x 1024). Does anyone know if this is a Vista x64 problem or a problem with the nVidia drivers? I've checked eVGA's and nVidia's websites and they both claim t…

Telephony Will Not Start
by Guest Nick- 3 replies

I am unable to Dial-up the Interent because the Telephony Service will not start. I have: Entered Run services.msc, right-clicked on Telephony, and left-clicked Properties; with Start-up type set to Manual I clicked the Start button. Instead of starting error message 1053 appeared. The message said, the service did not respond to the service request in timely fashion. I checked to see if the services Telephony depends were running and both Plug-N-Play and RPC had started. I entered the path to the executable program and found svchost.exe in C:\WINDOWS\System32, but the path also had a suffix -k tapisrv, so I performed a search for tapisrv and …

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=205100675&cid=nl_IWK_daily Where does XP X64 fit into the scheme of things regarding SP3? I realize the RC mentioned in the article is not for X64. But does that mean there'll be one coming soon for us leading-edgers? Or does X64 not need the fixes that SP3 contains?
