64 bit versus 32 bit RAM
by Guest Rick- 4 replies

Two questions: 1)I have Vista 64 bit, I wanted to see if it could be converted or reloaded to the 32 bit with the OEM version I have, but from prior questions it seems that there is no way to convert the 64 bit versio to the 32 bit version, unless somebody knows a way. 2) If I do reinstall and go with the 32 bit versioin, I have heard there is problems with that version supporting more than 2 GB of RAM, I now have 4 GB of DDR2 in my system. Thanks, Rick

Upgrading from fat to NT machine. Lots of headaches most I have figured out but this one is taking so much time I am asking for much needed help. The computer guy I paid el-buckos do just shook his head and said he could not understand it, as it never happened to him before. I did get some help with office and uninstalled and redid it a different way but while it runs I still have some issues with it. I have xp-pro. All the problems have to do with programs. I installed my office 2000 on new machine and office icon does not work. What it does is roll over to the tool bar and I have to use the tool bar for everything. It took 2 days but I got access workin…

32-bit apps CAN access \system32 folder in Vista x64
by Guest Carlos- 0 replies

I know this is going to open a debate here. A couple of posts ago I stated that the 32-bit file manager ZtreeWin could access the real \system32 folder without being redirected (fooled) to the \syswow64 one. As I had no technical proof, except for the practical one of using and testing it, I checked my old e-mails and found the ones I exchanged with the ZtreeWin programmer (Kim Henkel). The method is well described by Microsoft here, including an example of a 32-bit app launching the 64-bit Notepad.exe http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365743.aspx :) Carlos

Epson 2580 Photo Scanner
by Guest Theo- 0 replies

Believe it or not Epson has finally released a driver for this scanner that has 64-bit drivers. The file is listed as Windows Vista 32-bit Edition epson12204.exe - 20MB - posted on 02/15/07 but it in fact has 64-bit drivers included in the package and I have installed it on my XP x64 system. I also installed the drivers on my XP Pro system. So, even though it claims the package is for Vista 32-bit it seems it alos works on XP 32-bit & 64-bit.

Windows x64 Edition won't start after Avast Update
by Guest BillBled- 20 replies

Hi, I have a computer that I built that won't boot after the latest Avast update. I updated Avast late Thurs (10/25/07) night and when it said that I needed to restart the computer, I pushed OK for it to restart and went to bed. I got up Friday morning and it was on a solid blue (not BSOD) screen. Now, it won't boot at all. I get thru the POST, and when it gets to launching the Windows x64 logo, it freezes on a black screen. No text. I also: - cannot get into any of the safe mode options, with one exception - when I launch into "Safe Mode" - I can see the lines "multidisk, rdisk, etc etc" coming across the screen and it stops on a line that ends in \…

System Restore is not working due to RPC server error
by Guest Thomas- 7 replies

Hi, I have a problem with my Vista x64 installation. Something happened on my system that lets 'System Protection', 'Backup and Restore center' and 'System Restore' fail with te following message: "The transfer syntax is not supported by the RPC server. (0x800706C2)" I would like to revert to an earlier restore point but unfortunately this problem prevents System Restore from working at all. I post the message here because after some digging I found out that the message has something to do with a 64bit (ndr64) RPC client trying to access a 32bit (dce) RPC server? Suggesting some 64bit component got replaced by a 32bit one? Any help would be much …

by Guest Nice Bike- 30 replies

Using XP pro now. I'm doing allot of large amount-file-moving from directory to directory. So I'm using Windows Explorer allot with cut and paste. WIN XP seems very slow sometimes when accessing directories with large amounts of files 20,000+ or so. So, I was thinking of installing WIN XP-64bit. Will it be faster for me with al the file moving and organizing I'm doing? I wont be using any 64bit applications per se.

by Guest Jim- 11 replies

I increaased the RAM on my system from 1GB to 3 GB. The sticks are 2 1 GB sticks and 2 512 MB sticks. As long as I keep the 2- 1GB sticks installed Vista will not Boot completely. First It will take about 15 minutes to get to the user selection window. Then after selection the boot process will only go to the opening window with a gray portion showing where the task bar would be located and the rest of the screen black. I will get a dialog stating the Windows Explorer is not responding. It also offers two choices Close the program Wait for the program to respond. I first tried to wait for the program to respond. After a half an hour I figured …

Hibernate / shutdown both fail to turn PC off
by Guest Mick- 7 replies

Hbernate / shutdown both appear to shut all devices down but the PC remains running. This has worked before but doesn't anymore and I've been unable to identify exactly what changed to cause the error. The PC is a dual boot and on the Vista 32 bit system hibernate / shutdown works as it should. How do I go about resolving this problem?

RE: UpDate:Nero SXS errors in event viewer (Carlos) Nero got back to me after three e-mails. This is where it stands. "thank you for your e-mail. Unfortunately we do not know why you have all those error messages in the event viewer, but if you want we can request some files from you and give them to our developers, maybe they will find the problem. Just write back if you want that we give this case to our developers." I have written back to them to proceed to give case to their developers.

LLTD Responder (protocol) and XP Pro x64

Hi folks, I've just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Seems everything works fine on it. I have a home network. It's a "hybrid", DLink DI-524 WirelessG router and 4 port switch. Desktop is wired to the router, external hd wired to router. Desktop is running XP Pro x64. Also have an old laptop running XP Home. The only networking problem I have (I think) is that my Vista system won't see either of the XP systems in the Network Map or in Explorer - Network if it is turned on while the other systems are already running. I literally have to turn on the Vista laptop first, then start or reboot the XP systems. Network Discovery Help tells …

So I had this Really nice gaming computer built. Its running this really great OS called Vista 64. (WTFE) Its causing a yellow line to run down my screen on the right side. Its not turning my computer off when i tell it to. Its not even being recognized as a 64bit OS when it comes to driver installs to fix the SLI issue im having with my 8800GTX's. Windows updates are not even installing because of "bad Installs" or so Vista tells me. Pure Edge Don't work. Thank god I'm a non-commissioned officer and have to use pure edge to counsel my fire team monthly. But on the good news Its recognizing my 4 gigs of ram. How can I fix these issues besides loadin…

Cant Install XP Pro x64
by Guest Ronis- 9 replies

Ive decided that I absolutely HATE vista (which came pre-installed on my computer) and want to install XP Pro x64 on my computer in its place. I have a 3 HDD RAID 0 configuration, no floppy drive (a 52 in 1 card reader in its place), and an i680 EVGA MB. Additionally, I was not given any RAID drivers with the computer, just the OS software and a recovery disk. I have alot of data already on the 3 other partitions of my RAID drive so I dont want to destroy the RAID to get XP Pro x64. During the OS install, I get an error that no HDD was detected. When I press the F6 (I think that is the key) to install 3rd party SCSI or RAID controller, I eventually …

MultiBoot with Vista Home Premium 64 & 32bit versions
by Guest Greg- 5 replies

I have recently purchased PC with quad core 2.4ghz, 4gb ram , 2 x 400gb Samsung SATA drives. The bootable drive has a 10gb hidden partition (used for restoring operating system). The PC has Vista Home premium 64bit installed. As some of my software that I regularly use does not run in 64bit I wish to install Vista Home premium 32bit as a multiboot. After reading FAQs etc i am confused. Some seem to suggest that earliest version of Windows must be installed 1st..others say doesn't matter. Which version is earlist or does it matter. How do i go about it, especially as there is the hidden Partition?
