Microsoft does it again
by Guest John Barnes- 2 replies

Just made the mistake of purchasing a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader. Box only said Vista (or XP) as the required OS, and mentions how it helps make Vista security more convenient. Well, insert the cd and it says then, and only then, that it only works on 32-bit Vista. Fortunately I can install it on my wife's machine, but just one more kick in the teeth for 64 bit from Microsoft itself.

Cannot set default printer
by Guest wgaj- 9 replies

We currently have 32 bit print spoolers but are testing a XP 64bit machine(Dell 690), The workstation is on a AD network and I have Admin rights. I installed the 64bit print drivers for the printers, used a local IP port to setup the printers and set Share name. The printers work when printing test pages and from certain apps where a default printer is not required. I, using a network account having local admin rights, cannot set a default printer. I get the Add Printer Wizard, Cannot Set Default Printer error or if I right-mouse-click and try Set Default Printer it does nothing. The printer name is a simple example "printer1" (no spaces). Oddly,…

I need to install the 64 bit version on a new HP server. The CPU is Intel Xeon 5150 @ 2.66 GHz. I have the Windows install CD part# P73-01780 which has both the x32 and x64 version. But when I run setup there is no option to select the x32 vs the x64. How do I get the 64 bit version installed? Thanks.

Forgotten Administrator Password
by Guest Bubba- 2 replies
I built a HTPC with XP Pro x64 Edition as thge OS. I had problems finding Internet Security software and a wireless card. BitDefender had a beta version and Abit had a PCI-E card. I had to find an antenna with a longer lead. It took a while to locate one. I did not write down my Administrator password so now I cannot get on the PC. Is there anything I can do short of wiping the HD and reinstalling? How about the product key? Thanks. -- WTM

Mail Profiles and Vista 64-bit edition
by Guest Joel- 1 reply
I'm looking at two machines side-by-side. Both have Office 2007 installed. One machine is running the 32-bit version of vista and the other is running the 64-bit edition of Vista. Within the Control Panel (Classic View) the 32-bit version has an icon called "Mail" that allows me to create and manage mail profiles. The 64-bit version does not. Is there a hidden option some where that I can modify to access this icon in the 64-bit edition or does it just not exists in the 64-bit version. Joel Johnson

by Guest Robin- 0 replies

My PC has an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ CPU, and had been working fine with Windows XP home edition. I decided to upgrade to XP Pro, and since it is a 64 bit CPU decided to get the 64 bit version of XP. I installed a new full copy of XP Pro x64. Formatted the partition first. XP Pro x64 installed and was OK until I donwloaded and installed IE7 64 bit version. After installation and reboot I had a background but no icons and no taskbar or start button. I tried many suiggestions from the web but none helped. Since then i have tried additional clean installations, reformatting again in between, but now every installation leaves me with the same situation; n…

Maybe this question has been answered before, if it has, I apoligize. Can you install a XP Pro dual system (Vista Ultimate 64 bit preinstalled by HP on a SATA drive) onto an external USB Western Digital Hard Drive? Or is it required to install on the internal sata drive with vista? Thank you for your help.
