I just set up my Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (Version 2003 SP2) on an Intel Core2 Quad 2.83GHz with 4 (3.93) GB RAM. My computer is continually telling me there are new updates. When try to install the new updates, once the update process is over I get this message: The following updates were not installed: Microsoft Corporation - Other Hardware - Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio So, a multi-part question: 1. Do I really need this update? 1a. If I haven't given enough info above, how do I find out if I really need it? 2. If I do need it, how do I get it to install? 3. If I don't need it... 3a. Why does it ke…

Hi Group: newbie/oldie question here. I need a new desktop machine to run Adobe Audition 3.0 as well as digital video editing software. I will be purchasing Vista Ultimate 64, Adobe Audition 3.0, digital video editing software, probably something like Cyberlink DVD editing, and I need a good/fast processor, good/fast main board, large amount of RAM, say 10GB, and medium-large hard drive (about 750GB-1000GB), an excellent video graphics card as well as an excellent audio rendering card for 5.1 surround sound. I'd like a 17" - 19" flat screen, infrared keyboard and infrared mouse. Are there any tech-savvy readers who could possibly please direct me - bu…

Video card, driver or both.

The original configuration was AMD Phenom9600, Asus M3A motherboard, Asus EN8500GT (Nvidia PCI-E), 4x1GB PC800 ram. Vista Enterprise x64 installed without any problems, sleep mode would cause a video lockup and there were intermittent video restarts. Changed the video card to an Asus EAH2600XT (ATI PCI-E) video problems were still the same. Changed the motherboard to an Asus M3N78-Pro, 4x2GB ram, Vista Enterprise x64 installed without any problems, with either video card the same video problems and sleep problems were present. Removed the video card to try the onboard video (Nvidia GF8300) all video and sleep problems were gone. Initial testing on the or…

Re: Windows XP x64 probably has bug in IPv6 Stack relating to ICMPv6.

Re: Windows XP x64 probably has bug in IPv6 Stack relating to ICMPv6. Situation is as follows: 1. Not a gui bug from my part. 2. ICMPv6 stats weren't updating because no gui code yet. 3. ICMPv6 reporter not receiving anything. 4. Ethereal is showing ICMPv6 error reports... but these are encapsulated inside IPv4 packets. (Tunneling ?!?) 5. GUI bugs caused by stack/drivers ? I wonder if encapsulated has anything to do with it... later I test a simpler example/code to see if it can receive icmpv6's at all ;) Bye, Skybuck.

Windows XP x64 probably has bug in IPv6 Stack relating to ICMPv6.
by Guest Skybuck Flying- 1 reply

Hello, I want to update my UDP Speed Test 3 to include ICMP reporters. The ICMPv4 Reporter for IPv4 is working fine. The ICMPv6 Reporter for IPv6 seems to malfunction: The situation is as follows: 1. Family: AF_INET6 2. Sock type: SOCK_RAW 3. Protocol: IPPROTO_ICMPV6 4. Any IPv6 Address or some specified address. 5. Open Socket. 6. Bind Socket. 7. ReceiveFrom. Delphi/The Console suddenly prints: GetAdapterList: IP_UNIDIRECTIONAL_ADAPTER_ADDRESS resource failure= 8 It seems this message is coming from some drivers or the IP stack itself ?! Other symptoms: GUI fails to redraw, response slowly, or doesn't react. (GUI+Console app) By…

Win is wearing out my hard drive
by Guest johnsuth@nospam.com.au- 3 replies

XP Pro x64 is interrogating my SCSI hard drive every second, and periodicaly reading the whole drive, while my foreground application is waiting for me to give it another instruction. I have not authorised any background applications and I have turned off some Windows services which I felt were simply not neccessary for my use of this computer, including internet access. The computer is definitely not accessing the internet. What might I consider to stop this noisy and pointless disk access?

Google Earth

Hi I'm buying a new machine soon which will have Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. One of my favourite programmes is Google Earth, and it's own website says it doesn't work with 64 bit systems (although some users seem to have found workarounds). Is it possible with Vista to tell some programmes to work in 32 bit mode? Or does anyone here already run GE on such a system? Thanks

64-bit IE7 felicity: 32-bit add-ons don't run (hooray!)
by Guest David Stevens- 3 replies
I love 64-bit Vista. ActiveX controls and browser add-ons -- like Adobe Flash -- tend to be 32-bit animals. They don't work on the 64-bit versions of IE7 and other browsers. I like that. It means I don't get bothered by advertising animations. Instead, I get lots of little messages inviring me to install the newest Flash. I find those messages easier to ignore than the actual animations. They also require less bandwidth. If my wife really needs a video fix from YouTube or the Daily Show website, she can use the 32-bit version of IE7. But I've come to favor the 64-bit browser precisely because it helps me keep my focus on whatever I am…

TV Tuner Options?
by Guest Charlie Russel - MVP- 17 replies

A friend was asking what the options were for 64-bit supported TV Tuners, and I said I didn't know because I'm a happy TiVo user. But I'd ask here, since I know a few of you have an interest in this area. His options are basically USB or PCI - the only free PCI-e slot is blocked by the monster video card he bought for his son. OS is Vista 64-bit, but could be XP x64 if necessary, I suspect. Thanks! -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel

DQSD x64 Beta 1 Releases!
by Guest Charlie Russel - MVP- 14 replies

Old timers here will know that I simply love Dave's Quick Search Deskbar - http://www.dqsd.net. And that there was a semi-custom solution to running it in 64-bit that I used. Well, with a lot of hard work and persistence, we now have 64-bit support built into the mainstream of DQSD. Whenever we build a new version, we'll be building a 64bit version side by side. YIPPEE! The installer is still a batch file that has my hands all over it, though with a lot of excellent suggestions from Kim Grasman it is cleaner and a bit smarter. But it works, and appears to be smart enough for general use. So please - go download it and check it out. It's one of those littl…

Will I have issues with XP 64 for downloading music?
by Guest Ms Simba- 3 replies

I have had problems with Windows XP Pro64 not being compatible with my software. So much so that my nephew installed a virtual system on my computer so I can run these programs using Win 98. I am thinking about buying a MP3 player as I want to listen to audiobooks that I have downloaded (music also). I know absolutely nothing about MP3 players. My questions is: am I going to have problems downloading audiobooks, music, and videos if I am running Windows XP Pro 64?

64bit Version of Vista......What are some reasons why I would want to install this?
by Guest Jeff Ingram- 3 replies
Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I might want to install the 64 bit version of Vista. What would it give me? Ok, I'd be able to access more than 4gig of RAM (which my motherboard doesn't support). Is it more solid and stable? Would it be faster than the 32bit version? And where would I get the 64bit version? Is it on the same DVD as my 32bit version of Vista? Could someone convince me why I should care about a 64bit operating system? Thanks, Jeff

When they speak of "no fan" - I just wonder if that includes 'no cooling tower'? I begin to suspect this could well transpire as 'My Own Next Project'? Tony. . .

I am trying to enable the volume icon on the taskbar but whenever I go to the 'Sounds and Audio Devices properties' applet in CP and select the option I receive an error saying the the Volume Control program is not installed and I need to use the ADD/Remove programs in CP. If you haven't figured out where this is going, there is no volume control program to install and I haven't been able to find one. Anybody has a clue where I might find it. Thanks,

These guys http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nvidia_Forceware_for_Vista_d5935.html say there is a new release of Nvidia drivers with PhysX support! Ageia PhysX was an add-in card that supported the law of physics in games. NVidia bought Ageia and now no separate card is needed. These drivers still don't show up in NVidia's web site. Carlos
