64bit Trialware not working
by Guest Ronis- 6 replies
I downloaded the xppro64 trialware at : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/facts/trial.mspx After downloading the file (572,022kb) - named WS03SP1_RTM_1830_PX6_EN.iso, I burned it to a CD per the instructions. Per the instructions I received via the email, I put the CD into my CD ROM, and when it opened, I had the 1 file WS03SP1_RTM_1830_PX6_EN.iso. Nothing started, directly contrary to what the email stated would happen. I opened the CD ROM and there was no setup.exe file, as the email stated there would be (nor was there one when I downloaded the trialware (as I stated, the download only resulted in 1 file: WS03SP1_RTM_1830_PX6_EN.iso). So…

Desktop heap - CsrSrvSharedSectionBase invalid
by Guest Mads- 3 replies
Hello. On Windows Server 2003 (64-bit) the CsrSrvSharedSectionBase-value in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager \SubSystems\CSRSS] is invalid. I've seen this on several machines. Not one machine had a valid value. Does anyone know why this is? What is it used for? Is it 32-bit specific? How about the Windows-value in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems]? Is that 32-bit specific? I'm having some problems finding the right value for the SharedSection- setting in the Windows-value in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems]. The default…

Vista crapped out in Virtual PC.

Hello, I was trying to get the network working in virtual pc via the loopback adapter trick. Vista was already "running" so I did this: 1. Removed all protocols. 2. Removed the network adapter. 3. Vista immediately re-installed the network adapter. 4. Rebooted. End result: Dead tcp/ip stack, dead control panel, dead network connections panel. 5. Vista complains non genuine vista.. 6. Tried the repair options, wasted 15 minutes of time. 7. Rebooted one more time, did not help wasted some more time. 8. Finally vista says it's going into reduced mode. Lessons learned: 1. Don't remove all protocols. 2. Vista can't repair stack li…

30 Days of Vista Ultimate x64
by Guest John Adams- 10 replies

I'm no stranger to Windows Vista. My wife and I were part of a program called "Living with Longhorn" (later changed to Living with Vista) in which we tested the product in our home starting in August of 2005. We saw the OS develop from an early (and very different) beta on to what it is now. All that time, we were using 32-bit software. Recently, however (30 days ago to be exact), I purchased an all new system and decided to put Vista x64 on it. I picked out only hardware that had a Vista certified logo and installed Vista x64 as soon as it was put together. I'll detail my experience below: The Problems: The initial problem I had was in compatibil…

Uh.. How to search a specific folder?
by Guest Mike J.S.- 11 replies

How the hell do you search a specific folder (and all subfolders) in WinXP? It's driving me nuts how dumbed-down this OS is, and how you can ONLY search "All Files and Folders" or "Documents" or "Pictures", etc. I want to search for specific files in a specific folder. I've asked 3 people already and no one knows how. Nor can they understand why it's so unnecessarily complicated to begin with. Indexing is OFF. Just a plain, normal, real-time search. Thanks.

Locking a computer without logging off...
by Guest Mike J.S.- 7 replies
Hi, A friend of mine has WinXP and is able to "lock" his computer without logging off. In fact, the welcome screen that asks you for your user password is different on his machine (it's a small square at the center of the screen, instead of the full page we get by default). I have the same thing on my computer at work, which is also WinXP. He said he once had it like I do, but then installed Autopatcher and it produced this change. Whatever it is that Autopatcher installed or turned on, it was from a Microsoft update or patch of somekind. Could someone tell me how I can do the same on my WinXP x64? What patch or switch do I need to look into?

Can't install XP x64 SP2
by Guest Mike T.- 7 replies

Hi, I'm trying to install XP x64 SP2 (currently running SP1), and I continually get the following error: c:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\51f9ddc99bdeac787cf18461eda3f2e5\amd64\update\update.inf is not correct. This is when I try to install from Windows Update. I've also downloaded the file and tried to install manually, but the same problem appears. After doing some googling, I saw that there may be an issue with the cryptographic service. I checked, and it is indeed running. For good measure, I restarted the service. There's no rights issue, since my user account has admin rights on the local machine, and the Administrators group has Fu…

I wish I could say that I was taking a break from this newsgroup because I'm going on vacation, but the reality is that I'm just totally buried in our next book on Server 2008 and I'm working way too many hours a day right now. So, since I know that all the regulars here are _good_ at helping everyone, and being positive and supportive, I have confidence that I can back off from my regular postings here for a little while. I know you'll all do just fine without me, but if something comes up, you can email me directly, or ping Darrell. My direct email is c h a r l i e (a t) s c r i b e s (dot) c o m.
