Web access to this NG needs fixing
by Guest Carlos- 6 replies

I know most of the regulars access this NG and post their comments/replies using a newsreader program (Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc.) I use the web access interface (don't ask me why) both for reading and posting. As of late last week I can only read but not post. I click on the sign-in button, do all the password thing, but I still remain "unlogged" and cannot post. Now comes the funny thing. The Web page (with the new greenish Vista look) for our NG is http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general&lang=en&cr=US&r=b7945a49-1582-4e99-b932-32fc064ebe5e That is the troubles…

Defrag reboots PC
by Guest JDJ- 1 reply

I recently formatted my notebook's hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro. After downloading all updates, I ran defrag. It runs through the analysis. After it compacts some files, it tries to move a file and reboots the notebook. I've looked at all of the self-help and emailed Microsoft. They gave me links to the self-help I'd already checked and to this discussion group. Any ideas?

Admin Password
by Guest Eli- 1 reply

Hello All, We are running 3 Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 servers. I would like to change the Administrator password on these boxes (all Domain Controllers). I have yet to find a clearcut way of accomplishing this, is creating a user with full admin rights, then disabling the Administrator the only way to go here? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Eli

I just upgraded to WinXP x64. Does Microsoft have any plans to release 64-bit versions of its Office 2007 components? Should I wait or go ahead and install the 32-bit versions. Thanks.

Hello there everyone just want to get some ramifications of 32 bit applications specifically "Scribe Light" integration software running on Windows 2003 64bit server I have not loaded it yet but if anyone has already tried this I would like to no how it worked. Also are there other issues I should consider loading 32bit applications on windows 2003 server x64? Will 32bit applications run without affecting the other applications running in 64bit mode?

OT but Important: Usenet Abuse and Impersonation by a sick individual using IP address 168.159.68.68 Hi: To all respective forum readers, please take notice: 1) First of all, my apologies for such a wide off-topic cross- posting. It's unusual, and very frowned upon. But I deem it necessary in lieu of recent events. You can just disregard if you will. 2) There is a user on the net who has impersonated "Don Klipstein", me, as well as other respectable Usenet posters. He/she is using our names, email addresses, and profiles to post nonsense on Usenet newsgroups. This impersonator seems to be located either in Burma or Korea and has the IP address of 168…

Need Help with Indexing Service Not Showing PDFs in Results
by Guest razor- 1 reply

Hello-- We migrated our IIS server where we host our websites from a W2K3 Server platform to W2K3 64-bit platform and started seeing strange errors. This is the error we get: Test connection failed because of an error in setting the window handle property. Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. service name: cisvc.exe After we do a indexed search, the PDF's are not listed. We noticed that the service is pointing to the sys32 folder, so maybe there is a configuration change we need to make to point it to the syswow or add another service--just speculating. Any help will be greatly app…

Strange persistant blocking of open ports
by Guest JBT- 7 replies

At work I'm running an all up to date Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Version 2003 SP2 on an Asus Vintage V2-PE2 board with built-in NIC (VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter). For that I found drivers from the ASUS site, which installed succesfully. Not once in my life have I been unable to open a port in ANY O.S. but this time it seems impossible to accomplish! I'm at a loss here. I'm an expert in networking and routing, but I have to turn to MS for this, since it's not clear what the OS is doing. On one and same LAN I have several machines, servers even, with no problem having some ports opened and using those ports. The LAN is behind a Thomson SpeedTo…

Has anyone gotten sysprep to work on Windows XP 64-bit SP2? When I execute it (either the pre-SP version off of the CD or the Windows Server 2003 64-bit SP version off of the web site), it gives me the hourglass for a few minutes and then returns an error. "An error occured while trying to update your registry. Unable to continue" Machine is Intel Pentium 3.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Dell Optiplex 745.

Adding/Removing...
by Guest XS11E- 0 replies

Windows XP has the sysoc.inf file that could be edited to unhide applications so they could be removed with the add/remove Windows features. Is there anything similar in Vista? There's tons of crap I'd like to remove but I can't find out how to do it other than the long, slow manual method... -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html

Faulty XP Pro Installation.
by Guest CreativeImages- 0 replies

Boiling down a problem to the simplest, single issue – my XP professional installation is not correctly installed and is not working correctly. The causes of this situation are faulty tech support, multiple repairs and fixes – almost all made thing worse. Both Microsoft auto update and Windows Live OneCare state there is an important security update that needs to be installed. When I allow auto update or OneCare to perform the update – it fails. The error messages are as follows: 1. Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 Service Pack2 (kb936181 or kb916281) not installed. 2. Security Update For Cumulative Security Update Internet Explor…

The FunctionMapper callback API in profiler is working fine in the 32 bit profiler. This feature is very useful to us because it can map a functionID to a FunctionInfo pointer so that the callback from a function enter will return a pointer to the FunctionInfo in the m_pfunctiontable directly. It will save time instead of doing a lookup by function id. However, when I port our .Net profiler to 64 bit. This feature seems to be gone. It can only return the functionID even though we have mapped the function ID to pointer address by using this API ProfilerCallback::FunctionMapper. Question? Is the feature for function mapping in 64 bit .net profiler inter…

For the past week, my pc, which has been running windows xp professional flawlessly for over 5 years, has decided to "blue screen" me every few minutes. There is a lot of information put on the screen about the error but it is only there for a second so it is very difficult to read. However, It does start off by saying that windows has been shut down to protect my computer. It there gives an error message, which goes something along the line of "Version not less than or equal to..." but I do not know of what. The only updates I have done to my computer recently have been from window's update. Any clues about how this started or, better still, how to sto…
