Anytime Upgrades from 32 to 64
by Guest Peter- 7 replies

I am about to buy a shiny new UK Dell Dimension, quad core 4Mb ram etc. The model I am interested in only comes with Vista 32 but I want to upgrade to Ultimate 64bit. I have access to Microsofts Anytime upgrade disk but it only covers 32bit upgrades. What is the best way to upgrade. Do I ask Dell to supply Home Premium and then buy a shrink wrapped version of Utlimate, the only version with both 32 & 64 bit versions on one disk? Or do I buy Dell's 32bit Ultimate and hope that Microsoft will oblige with a replacement 64bit disk? Many thanks Peter

Moving from XP64 Pro Evaluation version to OEM version
by Guest mahesh- 12 replies

All I downloaded the 120 day evaluation version of XP-64 Professional onto my workstation and have started using it for a while. In the mean time, after evaluation, I ordered an OEM version of XP-64 SP2 and now have the CD with me. What is the best way of moving from the evaluation version to the OEM version that I have bought? At the end of 120 day evaluation period, will the OS ask me to enter a new product-key and validate the XP-64 OEM version? Or do I have to do a new, clean install with the OEM version that I have bought? Thanks in advance.

unauthorized windows
by Guest jerrywmauldin- 2 replies

my girlfriend just discovered that the used computer she bought has an unauthorized version of winows on it. At least it is not the one that came with the computer. She discovered this because many games and othre programs give her a message that says the windows is not the right one. How can she fix this so that her computer will work with ease? Should she do a system restore or should she uninstall the operating system? Then is it okay to install a new operating system when the problematic one is uninstalled? Thanks,

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
by Guest CraigB- 4 replies

I keep getting (randomly) a system service exception on BSOD. The stop is 0x0000003b (0x00000000c0000005, 0xFFFF80001EB638c, 0xFFFFF98021b412c01, 0x0000000000000000) This occurs on a new laptop running vista ultimate 64 bit 4gig memory. It is a clean installation. I tried to research system_service_exception and 0x0000003b but i could not find and pointers on how to solve ths error as it relates to vista. Windows event viewer don't through any light on the subject. Any pointers to a knowledge based article or how to sort this out would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I have several machines with same kind of IP adresses 10.2.XXX.XXX. They have all the same subnet mask, the same gateway. They are all connected to the same switch. They can all ping themselves. They have all the same property ''Link speed and duplex''=auto-detect. All the machines can ping machines with IP adresses 10.1.XXX.XXX except 1 computer. And this is my problem. When this computer (@IP=10.2.XXX.XXX) try to ping machines with 10.1.XXX.XXX IP adresses, the following output appears: hardware error hardware error hardware error hardware error The computer who can not ping has the following operating system: microsoft windows xp professional x64 e…

Yes, not an x64 app, but x64 Vista friendly x86 application. This freeware PDF reader is much lighter and faster than Adobe's one. I've started using it almost one year ago and have almost forgotten how Adobe is spelled. Go here: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm and get your 2 megs download. Using it right now in Vista x64. Carlos

Network printer - S-L-O-W
by Guest Homer J. Simpson- 2 replies

Hi all, I have a network at home with a bunch of PCs and laptops, mostly running XP x86. They're all setup to use a printer through my LAN, which is physically hooked up to one of the machines and shared. It just so happens that my one XP x64 machine is incredibly slow whenever it tries to do any sort of printer access. Just navigating through any application's print options can take 4-5 minutes for each mouse click. The same operations performed from other machines on my network are fine. I have no trouble printing--everything's fine and there's no error or warning logged anywhere. It's just that things are very slow, like the system is trying …

Hello, I tried RootkitRevealer v1.71 on Windows XP x64 Pro... but on startup it crashes... Possibilities: 1. Program doesn't work on X64. 2. Rootkit prevents RootkitRevealer from running ? :) Bye, Skybuck.

Cannot detect external USB hard drive
by Guest geraintwd- 19 replies

I've got a 3.5" Maxtor Diamondmax 10 PATA 133 250GB drive in an external USB enclosure. It has worked previously but Windows has recently stopped detecting it. This is what I've tried so far - should cover the usual suspects: - The USB cable is plugged directly into a port on the back of the PC (not a hub) The power comes from a separate DC power supply so that's not the problem. The drive is spinning and the fan in the enclosure is working as well. I've checked for loose connections and can't find any problems. I've tried another known working drive of the same type with the same result. I've deleted the appropriate UpperFilters and LowerFi…

Error Loading OS, but load if WinXP cd is inserted(??)
by Guest Carlos Lozano- 6 replies
Hello, I have a a WinXP sp2 machine that sudenly started giving an error loading OS message. I checked the hardware connections, replaced cables, checked jumpers, verified the HD, partition, and everything I can think off. All seems to be okay. By mistake I turned the machine on when the WinXP CD was inserted in the CD drive and noticed the OS loaded from the disk just fine (not from the CD). I tried several times with the CD inserted and without it. It always loads when the CD is in, and always fails when there is no CD. If I run scandisk it finds no errors. Any idea? Thank you, Carlos

USB floppy during installation
by Guest mjd- 22 replies

I was able to (apparently) successfully slipstream drivers for my Intel 82801HEM/HBM controller into an XP64 CD so that it completed both the text and gui portion of setup, but it won't boot the operating system, resulting in an 0x0000007B hard drive error. I can't seem to work the problem out. I had to slipstream the drivers because I have a laptop and there is no floppy drive, so the F6 driver route wasn't available. So I'm left guessing if I modified the setup scripts correctly and included all of the divers, etc. that I need. Actually, i do have a USB floppy, but that apparently isn't available during nstallation so that it isn't recognized as a drive.…

Re: Help installing x64 in RAID 0
by Guest Szaijan- 3 replies

Re: Help installing x64 in RAID 0 I just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on Monday on my system with an A8N-SLI Deluxe MB. My two RAID-0 Raptors are on the nVidia SATA controller, however, not the SI SATA slots. The installation DVD was able to recognize, partition and format my RAID array with no driver disk and seemed to work fine. However, now that I've removed the installation DVD, the system fails to boot unless the DVD is in the DVD drive. I do not boot off of the DVD drive, but the system still won't boot unless the disk is in. I'm hoping the following discussion holds the answer: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en…
