Thankyou dazzac1965. You guys are great.

Thank you too. Your appreciation of us means as much as the donation.

That's good to hear Jim. Thanks for letting us know.

Try the instructions here to turn on system restore. System Restore Group Policy restrictions Since you're using XP Pro use those instructions in the lower part. Unless you're using dialup you should be connected as soon as you bootup. I'm unclear as to what you mean by desktop and "warning" colour or "Desk Top menu".

If it can't be deleted by right clicking it in normal mode try doing it from safemode.

WIN 7 MEDIA CENTER TO XBOX 360
RandyL replied to ajackson269's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Alan. Not being an Xbox user all I can do is provide you with this link that Jelly Bean provided some time ago. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-media-center/learn-more/extenders/articles/extenders-xbox-overview.aspx Check it out. There is some info there. -
Dred try to get Malwarebytes to run by renaming the file as Muppet Rebecca suggested. If you are running in safemode your graphics would be horrible. Are they? This absolutely needs to be determined. Please follow the directions in the order given and be specific as to the methods you employ. As for the combo fix and logs if you are not using it on the infected computer alone I think your method is not going to work as you described although I must admit I'm a bit confused as to you trying to drag a file from from one drive to a program on another drive. In any case focus on Malwarebytes for now. And also determine positively if you are in safemode or not.

Is this a raid setup? Personally it sounds like the drive is failing or failed. I would backup data now. Why either of those things works at all is beyond me. Unless the two computers are identical the installations on the drives would not match the paramaters of the other hardware. Again reason to backup all your data. What is the make/model/number of your PC? You say you have installed Windows on it "many times in the past". Why did you need to do that and what type of disks are you using to do it? Recovery disks or Full Windows disks or what?

OK it's still slow on the internet but everything else is up to speed I'm assuming. Also assuming that it's not an issue with your ISP and your connection. The first thing I would do is follow up with some scans as outlined in the guide below since you were previously infected. After that if it's clean but still slow on the internet it might be your security products. It's worth checking out. ............................................ Personally the first thing I would try is uninstalling Stopzilla. You could always reinstall it but I would not have it on my computer. After that run the scans. Next try disabling Norton temporarily. That's probably not the cause but Stopzilla or the combination of Norton and Stopzilla might be. Here is a our guide for you to follow up with malware. Let us know if it finds anything and what it finds. Your computer might still be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt. Click on the Exit button to quit the program. ================================================ STEP 2 Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [*]Click Finish. [*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this. [*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process. [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 3 Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version). Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. Open SUPERAntiSpyware. Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button. Click the Scanning Control tab. Under Scanner Options make sure the following fields checked: [*]Click the Close button to leave the control center screen. [*]On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer. [*]On the left, make sure you check mark All the Fixed Drives. [*]On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan. [*]Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer. [*]After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK. [*]Make sure every entry has a check mark next to it and click Next. [*]A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then Finish to return to the main menu. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 4 Please visit the ESET Online Scanner, using Internet Explorer to initiate the scan. Note: If you are running Windows Vista, then you will need Administrative privileges to complete the latter part of the procedure. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Start button. Click the Install button on the following screen. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. Now I'm starting to see other people with this problem over here so it is indeed a big problem. Thanks Cyprus. Now I know what's going on.

Hoggie if you used that disk already on another computer you may have problems validating it. You can only use the key that came with it on one computer at a time per Microsoft. So if it's already in use you can't use it again to validate the installation. If it is no longer in use you would need to contact Microsoft to clear up the validation issue if I understand it correctly. One disk-one license-one computer. Since your computer came with Windows preinstalled it's likely that you may have the option to create a set of Recovery disks should you ever need them. I know I have not addressed the boot issue but you may want to reconsider what you are attempting depending on your circumstances. I see your disk is retail but if it's not a FULL version of Windows then it may be a OEM disk or Recovery disk that is model specific. Since it boots to the Recovery options (There is no Recovery Console like there was in XP) but won't boot to install that may be why.

Hi Luke. That's great. I'm glad you sorted it and took the time to tell us so. Please feel free to ask us anything else or if you want we could offer some advice if you feel the need to check for additional malware. Maybe next time we can help you before you help yourself. :)

I agree Kev. Both AVG and teatimer are possible causes. I used to use Spybot and teatimer caused problems for me and many others. I'm not an expert either.

"writing out a few instruction sets before it can be used on forums" That would be excellent. Any forum would do well by having you write it up and post it. It's in good hands. There is a lot in there.

A slow booting computer can have many causes. But it seems you have a few other issues too. So many things to try. We can only guess. A proccess of elimination. Slow booting issues: 1. Failing hard drive. 2. Malware. 3.Too many startup items. 4. Bad RAM. 5. Failing or failed hardware device like a CD/DVD drive. 6. Incompatable device not supported by the OS like a printer. 7. A poorly written installed program at startup like an antivirus program. 8. And more. You mentioned. 9. Freezing. 10. AVG free 11. Spybots tea timer. 12. Found new hardware wizard on boot up. 13. 12 month old previously working printer. 14. Probably 512 Mb RAM. 15. A small computer. Possibly a slim line or mini tower. I'm wondering if the clues are in those aspects or combination of those aspects or if there is something more. It really is a proccess of elimination. If it were me I would start with the basics to rule them out first. But where to start? I can suggest a few things but can't promise anything. A. Disconnect all peripheal devices like printers or anything else plugged in to any type of port that you don't absolutely need. B. Uninstall any peripheal software. Also remove printers and such from Control Panel. C. Uninstall tea timer. D. Uninstall AVG AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Tools download E. Run malware scans. We have a guide if you want to try that. Since you are using AVG that is a distinct possibility. F. Uninstall any programs that can not be absolutely trusted before the scans. G. Replace or remove RAM sticks. H. Run check disk or run a scan of the hard drive obtained by the manufacturer of the drive. I. Open up and clean the machine of dust and grime being careful how you do it. Heat from clogged fans or failed fans can cause issues but I doubt that is an issue in your case. However small towers may or may not have cooling issues so I thought I would mention it. The others have all brought up good points. That's why I added what little bit I could and tried to sum it up. Hopefully they can continue to guide you in this matter. By the way do you have your XP disk?

Skype headsets for Win 7
RandyL replied to Cyprus Hector's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Cyprus. To my knowledge headphones should be just like speakers. Just plug them into the proper input and they should work no matter the version of Windows. Are you using front or back inputs when you plugged them in? Have you checked your audio input settings in Control panel? I have a feeling this might be just a matter of setting your audio to use the front jacks when headphones are plugged in. On some you can bring up sound on speakers and headphones at the same time so it might be just a setting depending on what audio you have. If you supply your make/model/number of your PC or what sound card or chip you have perhaps someone can offer more. I know nothing of Skype but I'm sure someone does. -
Made Stupid Error, help would be appreciated
RandyL replied to sportingman's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi sportingman. There is a very short time period where posts can be edited. This helps avoid confusion where someone might edit a post and no one sees the edit because they scroll down to the most recent post. There is no perfect solution to this within the Vbulletin software options. Just make a new post and state any other different information you would like to supply. -
Canon video camera & Adobe Elements 7
RandyL replied to Cyprus Hector's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Cyprus. It doesn't look like there is any support for Windows 7 in the downloads for your camera. MVX35i No TWAIN drivers anyway. Does your camera show in Computer? The only other thing I could find was how to import from a camera using Photoshop Elements. Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 * Get photos from a digital camera or card reader -
Open the Mcafee Security Center. In mine I select Computer and files. Then configure. However I've never had a problem with running those scans with Mcafee running.

When you format are you using the Quick format? How to partition and format a hard disk by using Windows XP Setup program instead of the other Do you mean csrs.exe? If so it does appear to be malware. If it is csrss.exe it should be in System32 not CONFIG which also indicates malware.
