Hi Dalo -- Thanks for that.So to expand a little, check and clean any input connectors such as microphone etc. ? Or can you recommend an action to remedy this. Also I have my mobile phone near the pc but this has never caused a problem before and I have no other mobile devices close to the sub ( whatever that is ? ) Any help / recommendations appreciated. Thanks, klw

Hi -- I have a really annoying sound issue on my desk top. I have a sound that I can best describe as similar to a phone ringing but a lot more random and a lot more constant ( sometimes non stop sometimes intermittently and sometimes not at all , but mostly non stop ). I don't recall downloading anything recently that may have caused this. I have looked at task manager and there is an audio file that seems to be taking up far too much cpu ( up to 10% ) than I would imagine it needs to and it is called " audiodg " ( windows audio device graph isolation ). This could obviously be a clue. I have 3 applications running , skype ( no it is not a traditional ringing tone and I have used skype for years without ever having this problem before ) and 2 trading platforms, which again are normal for me . I have just stopped all 3 apps. now and the noise has stopped ( wish I had done it one by one ). I have also re-started all 3 and the noise has not re-appeared for now. A bit puzzling. Any ideas please ? klw

Hi Hi people -- much appreciate the assistance so quickly. I am having probs. downloading firefox via cd to my vista pc keeps coming up with " file corrupt " when I try to run it on my vista pc. I tried that link on my xp pc and it crashed there as well. I cant understand why this is happeneing all of a sudden, not sure what's changed if anything, maybe an update a few days ago ? Running out of time rapidly now so looking a bit ominous atm. Thanks anyway will persevere. klw -
Hi --- Can not connect to the internet. I have logged it here under Vista as I think the problem lies with the vista pc. I have an xp machine ( this 1 ) that connects ok and a wireless pc with windows 2000 in the next room that connects ok it's just my vista pc that wont connect. I have a wireless router modem set up with the vista and xp pro pc,s hard wired and a windows 2000 pc connected wireless in the next room. I had a couple of warning signs recently where an error message " internet explorer has stopped working " was displayed and then I lost all my open web pages. I restarted them ok and carried on browsing until this morning when I now get the standard " I/E can not display the webpage ". I am up to date with all updates as far as I know. Webinar this afternoon as well. Anybody any ideas please ? klw

Hi Tony -- Will do tomorrow
-
Hi Advanced -- Thanks for that, will amend when I get the chance, have a very busy schedule for a while and will let things be for now to catch up on a back log of stuff to do. Kelvin ..............

Just to add A runs on vista , B runs on XP pro and C is windows 2000 based I believe.
-
ERR You are not going to believe this but A has connecting to the web again. I know ! I know ! All that has happened is that B has been re-booted ( this pc is left running 24/7 as I have mentioned in an earlier post it has a sat. card ( which is listed as a lan )) and collects continuous data ). The electricity guys came knocking to say that the power had to be switched off for a short while for some local maintainence and after re-booting B , A now works. A now " sees " B , C and the netgear router. B now sees shared docs on C , the netgear router and has an internet gateway listed but nothing to say A is visible unless it is the internet gateway. C doesen't see anyone else. I would like them to be independant of 1 another i.e cant see each other, can anyone assist in tidying this up ? Kelvin ..............

or via this thread is fine as well.

Hi Advanced -- That's a very kind gesture you offered me. I'd like to give it a try. Would you be able to do anything in real time ? I use skype ( voice only ) , ICQ , or MSN messenger or good old fashioned phone. Many thanks, Kelvin .............

Hi Advanced -- Just looking at the link you gave me,it's pretty advanced stuff for someone like me and it's littered with all sorts of warning messages. Not sure if I fancy tackling that. My vista was pre-loaded so would not be able to re-load it if anything went wrong or am I worrying too much ? I am sorely tempted to just take it back to the shop and tell them it isen't working and get it sorted or give me my money back. That still doesen't solve the problem though as all pc's are loaded with vista now and I'm just going to get the same thing if I had a replacement. Any guidance is welcome.

Hi Advanced -- I only use the windows firewall which is enabled and AVG 7.5 from Grisoft for anti-virus. Thanks for the link. I will have a look tomorrow now and thanks for everything again. Kelvin ............

Found this just now http://www.andornot.com/about/developerblog/2007/05/virtual-pc-2007-and-nvidia-nforce.aspx Even better maybe is this :- http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/594020-vista-no-internet-can-t.html the third page seems to offer some solutions, would appreciate someone taking a look if they get the time as my head is almost mush after all this. The thread is July last year. I'd have thought it would have been sorted out by now,but who knows how long my pc has been sitting in a shop right ? Kelvin .................

Just pleaded with the Netgear support guy and he reluctantly helped me out. When you try to ping the router it comes up with " transit failed error code 1231 " He diden't have any information on this and has referred me to my supplier which I will do in the morning as it's getting late here in the UK . Kelvin ..............

Hi Advanced -- It seems to enable the lan ( in theory ) as when you right click on it later it gives you the then default option of disable. It then chuggs away and comes back as unidentified network. Anyway I really appreciate all the help I have been getting,it's been a very stressful day so far. I will give Netgear another try, they weren't very helpful last time as my router is a couple of years + in age. Many thanks, Kelvin ...............

Just realised in response to my last post,my ISP setting on the netgear set up was " encapsulation = PPPoA " So that would rule out the broadband ( PPoE ) option as I seem to remember that my ISP doesen't support this.
-
I would like to re-ask a question that I asked at the beginning. Does pc A have to connect via a network? Under IE - tools - internet options - setup there is an option to to connect to broadband ( PPoE ) . Is this a direct connection that by passes the network card which seems to be the problem here ? Does a pc need a network card to connect to the net ? Thanks, Kelvin ..............

Sorry forgot to add :- Windows vista and Netgear wireless router modem DG834G Kelvin ..........

Hi Advanced --- PC A you are correct. B is currently ok These 2 are both hard wired. C is working ok and is connected wireless Thanks, Kelvin ..........

Hi Tony -- The pc is only 3 weeks old max. It may be the card and if so I will contact the shop I bought it from. I can't get it out of my head that it's a conflict somewhere but without the knowledge or experience I can't tackle it. Pc B also has a satellite card ( which is classed as a lan I believe ) I wonder if it has anything to do with that ? Thanks, Kelvin ..............

Hi Tony -- Under network and sharing centre I have " unidentified network " as the network between my pc and the internet ( with a red cross between unidentified network and internet ) My settings are :- Unidentified network ( public network ) network discovery = on file sharing = on public folder sharing = off printer sharing = off password protected sharing = on media sharing = off I dont know wether these settings are right or not perhaps someone could advise. Not sure about the network card will have a look. No it does not,it only sees a printer. Thanks, Kelvin ...........

Hi Advanced -- The IP address 192.168.0.1 is the Netgear address. I also lost this pc ( B ) this afternoon and I was guided through the required settings by my ISP and we have B working again now. So I now have all the relevant settings for when I am able to " talk " to my router with pc A. My ISP was also not able to " talk " to " A " either and referred me to the shop where I bought it. I have swopped cables with a cable that I know definately works ( i.e the cable to this pc , B ) and that did not help with A. I don't know wether the router is set up for multiple addresses all that I can say is that there were 3 pc's working off it yesterday. That may have now changed as I did a reset this afternoon. 3 is too advanced for me to understand. Thanks, Kelvin .............
-
Hi Tony -- Still can't ping, same error message as above. Agreed it could be a network problem although everything in device manager looks ok. Only windows firewall Thanks, Kelvin ...........
-
Hi Tony -- ok done that. It still doesent recognise 192.168.0.1 address in IE . It comes up with " the address is not valid " Kelvin .............
