[Solved] Could you check this one please?
BreatGritain replied to BreatGritain's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Etavares, Thanks for your help, it's really appreciated. Step One Completed, no issues. Step Two Babylon has been removed, Ask Toolbar Updater gives a message "Sucessfully stopped the updater" - but the program still remains on the list. It doesn't appear to be even trying to remove the program, the message pops up pretty much straight away. Would you like me to proceed with steps 3 & 4 anyway, or does the ask updater need a little more attention first? Thank you, Tom -
Good Morning. It's a friend-of-a-friends laptop, and the user has been complaining that the laptop has been running slow. I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials, run an update and did a full scan - nothing was found. I then ran MBAM which was interesting, and OTL. MBAM report below, OTL reports attatched. Also, Are your devices trying to connect to both networks at the same time? Each device will only have one network adapter, therefore can only connect to one router wirelessly at any one time. This will usually be either the one that has the strongest wifi signal, or the devices "preferred" network. So you may be thinking that the other network stops when in reality your device isn't even connected to it?
-
Hi. I don't know how much use I will be. I install in homes rarer than businesses, so it's rare for me to see more than one router in one property. Forgive the way this is worded - do you really have two connections, or are you piggy-backing off next doors wifi? Which router is it that seems to drop off? Or is it either when you're using the other?

Asus - Dropping, Slow, or Weak Signal

It may also be worth hard wiring the laptop to the router by ethernet cable. If its slow this way too, chances are it's not a wifi adapter hardware problem. -
Windows XP shuts down after 3 seconds
BreatGritain replied to usmanozzy786's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, When you removed the battery, there is a good chance this will have cleared the BIOS settings. See if you can enter the BIOS before the pc shuts down (tap F2 or F10, sometimes even the delete key when the machine is booting up). If you can get into the BIOS, have a look for a shortcut key for "load defaults" or something similar, press it, and exit bios ensuring that you save the changes made. If this doesn't solve it, try go back into the BIOS. Take a look around and look for a temperature cut-off (might be worded a bit differently) if there is a temperature cut-off option, let us know what the value is currently set at. Be careful you don't change any of the options in the BIOS if you don't know what it's for! -
New desktop won't connect to wireless
BreatGritain replied to nickwireless's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Whilst you have the pc connected the te router by cable, it might be worth going back to the device manager and right clicking what I have quoted above, then click "update driver software" - let Windows search online to see if any newer software has been released for your computers hardware -
[Solved] can't connect wireless to routers
BreatGritain replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
When you click on your network from the list, what exactly happens? Do you get any error messages? -
Just a quick update. Took the laptop to the retailer for help. He Googled the CPU model number, and a spec sheet said the CPU is compatible with memory upto 1333mhz, which makes sense I guess? But still begs the question why Sony fit ram to the machine which is faster that it can take. Oh well. Also it appears there is a recovery partition, Armaggedon, you weren't far off the mark, just tap f10 on start up. Learning every day!

Diagnosing hardware problems
BreatGritain replied to Tobyfex's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Whilst you have the RAM out, check that no dust has fallen into the RAM slots, as this could prevent start up, too. -
The trouble with using somewhere like PC world is the fact that it usually costs top dollar, and the person carrying out the repair is often less experienced than that of someone who owns their own computer shop (not always, obviously). The trouble with using a local computer shop is you don't know if they're creating more work for themselves just to make more cash, you don't know if the guy is going to look through your personal files for anything of interest, and, frankly, if it's a pokey back-alley-next-to-24-hour-tattoo-parlour-opposite-night-club-but-just-far-enough-away-for-the-shop-front-to-be-dark-and-mysterious kinda shop, you don't know if the person has insurance that will cover your laptop if they do some accidental damage to it. All said and done, if you really don't feel up to repairing the unit yourself, I would try find a local pc shop that seems trustable, read some online reveiews and get a feel for a place. Until your screen is repaired, it's going to be difficult if not rather pointless to attempt to repair the mouse issue - chances are its just a driver, or it has been switched off using a keyboard shortbut (FN + f7, for example). Good luck.
-
It's Windows 7, but no cigar I'm afraid. Nothing happens. I have double checked, there is no recovery partition.

Well I have emailed Sony to see why it appears I have 1600 ram runnin at 1333, so hopefully they will reply before Christmas. I've also emailed them about a couple of other issues - since it was an ex-display model I want to return it to factory settings, but there is no recovery partition and no Windows CD, so we shall see what they say about that, too.

Starbuck, thank you for that table - it answers one of my questions perfectly :) Unfortunately this laptop seems to have the most unhelpful BIOS I have ever stumbled accross. It lets me change the date & time, boot order, and bios password.... and that's all it has got on there! Oh well. So if I get a stick of 4GB PC3-12800 I know it will fit and work. It should run at 1600, but my laptop may or may not slow it to 1333 for no apparant reason. Solved! Thank you for your help guys.

I know :) The Crucial site isn't giving any more info than I've given you, but when I removed the RAM cover to get the motherboard model, the module was stickered with PC3-12800

Oh dear, I didn't mean to cause a domestic! How come when I search for PC3-12800 it only seems to show up 1600Mhz modules. I know my modules are PC3-12800, I also know they are 1333mhz, but I can't seem to find any memory to buy that are the same... Any ideas?

Hi, This is a feature of Windows called Remote Assistance. If the seller has activated this feature, you can easily switch it back off again. What version of Windows are you using? In Windows 7, Double Click "My Computer", then click "System Properties" at the top of the page. Click the "Remote Settings" link on the left, and make sure the check box isn't ticked on the Window that appears. Click ok, Job done.

Thanks for clearing that up. You're amazing Ken, you know that? I've found the mobo part number under the ram cover, if it's of any use? : 31hk5mb0000 REV: F3B. Edit: Printed on the mobo itself is "Model: HK5" If it's relevant, the Laptop itself seems to have two different model numbers, SVE151D11M on the usual black sticker, and SVE1511P1EW on a white sticker a bit further away. Thanks for your help Ken :)

Thanks KenB, Heres what we got: Whilst using speccy, this sparked some interest... 665mhz??

Hi all, Thank you for the replies. KenB, Sony supplied the laptop with a 64-Bit o/s (Handy!) Heres the results: Seems to go against what Sony's website states - they claim a max of 8GB can be used - which do I trust? I can see nothing on the speed of the modules.. So i'm still a little confused. Am I correct in assuming that PC3-10600 = 1333Mhz & PC3-12800 = 1600Mhz?

Your Core i5 will over clock itself when it can, I'm by no means an expert, But surely over clocking it yourself will just spell disaster?

In which case Ken, I'd better not tell you how much I'm paying for it! :D

Hello. I'm planning on upgrading my laptop from 4GB DDR3 to 8GB. I've had a look at the specifications of the laptop which state: Memory Type: PC3-12800 Memory Speed: 1333Mhz. I understand the obvious bit, I want another 4GB module that runs at 1333mhz, but i'm confused because a search for PC3-12800 suggests a speed of 1600mhz. Is the type of memory (IE PC3-12800) directly proportionate to the speed? Which memory do I need? Simple things confuse me... Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I know this is an old thread... http://www.speedtest.net/result/2334850735.png All this in a village where I can't get a 3G signal. I love my job.
