  1. Thank you all so very much for your help and advice. Thanks for your patience with me. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I will try what you said. My son will definitely use safe to remove after this. I have another problem, this time with a computer. I will find the forum that applies to it, I might meet some of you there.
  2. Ok now, to let ye all know how I got on. I did the scan, it took hours to complete. I could see where there were 'lost files' also a list of 'Raw' files. DSTM you were correct, Easeus would only give me 10gb for free so unfortunately I had no choice but to purchase the software as my son was getting desperate. I was just about able to store the files in a folder in my desktop. What can be done with the harddrive now? Is it safe to use again? For the future what is the best means for holding files?
  3. I dont believe it but I can see the files. Ive just read what DSTM has said. I will have to see how it goes. Where will I put these files if I ever recover them, what if they dont fit on my computer. What is the best way to back up files, it is something we have never thought about.
  4. It shows in all those places thats why its so strange that ' icare' isn't picking up on it. The light is on and I can hear it running. If I am to open it I will have to force it as it seems to be glued, there aren't any screws or such.

  8. No good Nev I'm afraid. When I tried to scan it said 'Unable to determine file system type' whatever that means.
  9. Thank you Nev, I will give it a try

  15. Hello plastic Nev, Yes unfortunatly it was disconnected without using 'Safe to remove hardware' feacture. It was not dropped or knocked. We plugged it into Windows xp and it gave the same message. The make: Seagate backup plus portable drive. The model: SRD00FI
  16. Hello, My son bought a new laptop a few weeks ago ( sold his old one) He downloaded all important material from the old one onto an external hard drive to keep it safe. He now has windows 8. Everything worked fine until today, he plugged the hard drive into his friends computer and Microsoft Windows gave this message 'You need to format the disk in drive E before you can use it' When he clicked cancel it said ' E is not accessible. the volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted' Now it gives the same message on his own laptop. What has gone wrong? He desperately needs it to work as he has college material on it. Advice greatly appreciated please.
