Without going into a line by line description ;) can you advise roughly what that lot means, what is good, bad, desirable, necessary, etc. to me it's a list of numbers, to you guys it's probably the PC equivalent of the Holy Grail. Thanks Steve
  3. Lol :) I have just done that today on my own PC. I will save it until tomorrow for the my dad's. I planned on doing it anyway as it seems a good bit of general mainentance - I saved the printout for future use. This has become my holy grail - to get dad onto You Tube:cool: Thanks again gang - I'll report back here tomorrow - presumably once all of that is done I should just try and log onto youtube.com? Steve
  4. Ok done that. Now have the latest Java. Right here is exactly what happens. Log onto youtube.com and do a search then click to play (Abba's Mamma Mia if you're wondering). Message says "Hello you either have Java Script turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player" I follow the link to install Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0 I'm then asked to install the following Active X Control "Adobe Flash Player" from Adobe systems. I then click the yellow box at the top of screen to allow Active X and begin the download. After a few seconds or so the message "failed to install - for details go to www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166. Am I missing something obvious? - Is Java Script turned off as I never knew it was switchable. Phew! Fill your boots guys. Steve
  5. Well guys I want to know that what you do is sainted! - You cannot believe how grateful I am. Some people may pass through get help and disappear. You know what I might hang around and pester you guys for years - in a nice way of course lol. Two reasons the service is great: Obviously the cost. Just check the callout cost - even before repairs. Secondly, the answers and therefore the work are almost instantaneous. No hanging around for a day or two awaiting further instruction. I guess this is the reason for having techs from all over the world, so there is cover at most times. Simple yet fantastic! My only fear was doing it myself. Always frightened of causing a fatal error, yet the instructions are like a dummies guide - well they must be if I could...... etc. - you guys must get a buzz out of seeing us, but not as much as I got out of seeing my computer on the verge of death now on the verge of health again. I'm recently out of hosdpital and recovering (off work at least another month). This is a great tonic! Ok I probably shouldn't have put this here, but what the heck? - by the way "Wolfey" it was my other half who put me on to you guys - she call's you Wolfey by the way lol. You were able to hellp her last year - very complimentary - in fact, might have to name you as the "other" party at this rate;)
  6. Hi again fellas - I never did get this sorted out and now need to have a serious attempt as this PC and my Dad especially is missing out on so much as everyone and everything points to You Tube links:mad: I might repeat the clean up I have just been helped with on another thread and then have another go at this one. To pick it up where we left, do I need to remove and re-install Java (I've never done this by the way) Is it safe to remove Java first and then follow Wolfeymole's link? I'm determined to get this working and break the cycle of buying a new PC everytime there's a problem - must have cost a small fortune over the years:(
  7. Thanks again guys. No it's an old Compaq Presario 2100 - I say old but have hardly touched it since I bought it several years ago. Never been used other than storing photos and a spreadsheet from when I bought my car (used for running expenses) so at least 5 year old as I had it before my new car. Seth will the above adaptor or indeed a dongle work more or less plug and play? A secondary question, we,re about to purchase a new notebook as a 16th birthday present for stepdaughter - I've been advised this has inbuilt wireless adaptor. Presumably again plug and play? Steve
  8. Ok - after what seems like forever ;) I have followed Ron's 5 steps and got everything through my system. It should be fairly clean, I removed AVG and replaced with Avast. I now assume everything is ok? - The only slight note is it seems to take longer to boot up than it used to. Can I remove stuff safely from Startup or Boot up? - I'm only asking this as I saw someone on another thread advised the same. Also, at the end of Ron's clean -up instruction it mentions Hijack This. I am however a little dubious about deleting all system restore points and creating a new one - after all I think that saved me initially. I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I might even be happy soon:eek: Steve
  9. I have an existing upstairs and downstairs connection via a router - a mate of mine set it up on the grounds that he knew what he was doing and I couldn't get my head around it. I have been told, all I need to do is add a "dongle" to my laptop(s) and that will make them internet ready too. Is it as simple as that? if so any particular type of dongle - is that the correct name for them? - may as well try out the technology, especially as laptops are unused gadgets at present.
  10. Update: - reinstalled then uninstalled AVG. seems to have done the trick - though if I do a search for files and floders there using AVG there are still some remnants. However it is not trying to run and no conflict messages. Getting there (I think). Got to go to treatment room for my daily visit now at local health centre (not just the PC that's in trouble lol). Will try downloading and running recommended stuff when I get back.
  11. Have already tried that Seth. It appears it may be the remnants of an old AVG from 2005/6. I will try again though, bit I can't understand how that would work - it seems stuck there like a stubborn stain. Regarding the 5 steps to clear up the PC - in the very first step it mentions Spybot S&D. Am I supposed to already have this or download it along with the other suggestions? Might it be worthwhile just to admit defeat and have the thing restored to the initial settings - obviously backing up relevant files? - I seem to be getting in deep here and in danger of causing more mess:( I'm tired and obviously grouchy at present. Will look afresh in the morning. Thanks again fellas.
  12. Safe Mode makes no difference still get the avgse.dll message:confused: I've loaded avast and now when I reboot, AVG still tries to launch but can't - in program files there's a folder called Grisoft - I can't delete it. -I'd like to get this right before trying any of the other steps, or should I continue? Steve
  13. Cannot remove AVG as message avgse.dll cannot be removed - I've tried removing anything to do with AVG or Grisoft - to no avail:-(
  14. Thanks again fellas, but I still don't think I am out of the woods. I tried to remove AVG 8 as advised. Now it is there, but not there if that makes sense? - I can't run or update it, yet I removed it or at least tied to via the remove programmes option. I know this is slightly off topic. I just want tp clean this up and then find some way of protecting it. I am going to purchase an external hard drive and a flash drive. Is there a backing up programme? The main thing is it's working, but I just sense it is not quite right - awaiting the next problem. Not even sure if I have any antivirus protection - which concerns me of course. My local shop have reasonably priced stuff where they can clean and repair. Might be better I go there if I can't do it myself. I'd prefer doing it for free - with a donation to the site of course.:D By the way i tried testing on PC Pitstop - I'm sure it did me no favours. Now it won't run properly on there. Any comments? By the way Randy, I KNOW there is bad stuff on the system. When I run free scans I'm always told there's spyware and loads of other stuff found, which can be cured if I pay x amount of dollars.
  15. Apologies if already on here. I find running a PC is very much like a car but on a smaller scale. You get the brand new shiny model out of the showroom, get it home, amazed by the smooth, fast & efficient performance. Then in a few years it's like an old banger - ready for the scrapyard. Now ok, a bit dramatic perhaps. With a car, you maintain it, keep it clean, check tyres (tires for our friends across the pond lol) top up oil & water and have regular servicing - all prolongs the life of your little darling. I've never known how to get the best out of a PC - what are the do's and don'ts? - Yes, firewall & virus protection for internet users. But what about Scandisk? backing up, removal of spyware, malaware all that stuff. How often, which makes - there are millions of people claiming that by purchasing their product, your machine will be like new again. You can't buy them all. So I propose a maintenance checklist. Iwill now probably continue searching and find such a thing. I will then proceed to go quietly to a corner from where you may hear two shots. I will probably miss with the first one! Great site - well done to all. As one who works in Customer Service I can understand the great buzz of helping people. Steve
  16. Hey guys - look how late I'm up. Had a busy day, lots to do. Anyway thanks for the help and hope you haven't fallen out seriously lol - I know it sometimes reads a lot more aggressive that it should. Good news is the system restore appears to have restored things to normal. That allows me to access anything I may need to save. Most stuff I have is backed up, except for a few hobby photographs (birdwatcher) - I wasn't overly bothered about these so figured if it went t*ts up I had nowt to lose. Is it at all possible the problems were caused by AVG 8 - the update? - that's all I can think of. I'm not even sure I am protected! Next, where can I get this 8gb USB drive? - will that be sufficient. I read recently about a backup programme can you advise? and finally is there anything I can add to remove spyware and all associated rubbish as when I run tests, they always find fault then try to flog me something to clean it up - I haven't the knowledge or expertise to self-clean. Sorry if off topic - I'm relieved but wary at the same time. At least the hard-drive seems normal - I'm sure It was making a grinding noise previously. I'll check the thread or feel free to PM if appropriate - thanks guys. I'll read the forum more and see if I can find out how to look after my next one! Steve
  17. Just to add went to my local store today, looking at something new. He has advised me reboot in safe mode and see if I can do a system restore. I am suspecting it may be HDD though, as it "seemed" to be making a grinding noise. I was thinking it is only 4 or 5 years old - but can't be sure. I'm back in again now (obviously) - million dollar question - is my data retrievable? Thanks DH for attempting to unravel this. Steve
  18. My computer keeps automatically rebooting and not letting me do anything. I went into safe mode and that allowed me to disable the auto reset. Now it is doing it again and comes up with the following - disable drivers? check for updates. Try changing video adaptors, check with vendor for BIOS updates. Disable BIOS options such as chaching or shadowing. It then gives a string of numbers (possibly drivers) again I'll print below Stop - 0X0000008E (0XC000000C 0X806EE753 0XF469BOC 0X00000000) I wonder if the above are affected drivers? - needless to say the above is all above me and beyond my capabilities. I've not been able to get into the PC and backup/retrieve any data. Is this terminal? - am I going to have to replace. Does the above mean anything to anyone as just confuses me. I run XP service pack 2 and have the free AVG if that helps. Please advise anything - I'm going out shopping now - will look for my next purchase I think:mad: Here's hoping - please bear in mind, I can just about get into safe mode and that's just about it! - I think I have recovery software somewhere, but not sure if it will help. I'll answer any further queries on my return - using the downstairs PC for this message. Cheers Steve
  19. Sorry I'm confused now;) do I need to install Java - please note I said install and not re-install. Hi Seth, I'm one of those who clicks on the mail icon in IE6 for access to email. There is no such icon on IE7 - I have this PC setup for my father and try to keep things as simple as possible.
  20. Well i did as you mentioned. IE7 fitted - again where is the email icon?? I cannot receive or retrieve emails. When I downloaded and reset after following the instructions, i went to add/remove programmes -there was nothing in the java list. Then tried youtube, followed instructions and again unable to download. I just can't understand why it works on one machine and not another. Anyway, is there anyway i can make IE7 look like IE6 and get the mail back. Any other suggestions guys? Steve
  21. Cheers both - without sounding too ignorant, this will not damage anything else will it? - I upgraded mine to IE7 a while ago but lost half of the icons inc. email - so switched back again! Wolfie I never heard of the downloader either - again mine works well without it. I'll give it a try - fingers crossed! Steve Edit: - thanks for the welcome by the way :-)
  22. Hello All First posting on here and acting out of sheer desperation. This is from my father's PC - and try as we might we can not get youtube to work. I log onto youtube in the normal way (no problems on my own pc). then when I click on a clip i get the following message. Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. So I follow the link to get the latest, and click the yelow bar at the top of the screen to allow Active X, follow the prompts, and it looks like everything is in order. Then after a while of what looks like downloading the download stops. Is there any way around this - as it looks like a small problem to have to buy a new pc for. Apologies if posted in the wrong section but couldn't find anything suitable. Regards Steve
