  1. You can do it, but for the hassle, buy a new system as suggested.
  2. I know it sounds daft, but it depends on the MP3 player, I am assuming this one has a lithium internal as opposed to AAA :D I have one that charges off my blackberry charger and one that will only charge through its laptop cable even though the jack that it plugs into it is exactly the same  Sony themselves have become wizards at making you pay for their stuff when something from ebay at £2 inc P&P would do exactly the same :D In theory, if its the same jack (then regardless of the powersource) it should work.
  3. MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) in my opinion is one of the best FREE packages available. NOD32 suite if you are looking to buy.
  4. If it works on Vista it should work with W7 (as W7 is based around Vista) Have a look in the Manufacturers FAQ here:- FAQ
  5. Clicking from the PC/Laptop would point to the HDD, if it is the HDD, then you need a replacement HDD and then do a reinstall, which would wipe the Malware out aswell. You can use any OS disk, BUT you will need to source all your own drivers, well those that would not be picked up by windows update anyway. You could try and do a reinstall with the present HDD, but I have a feeling it would fail after an unknown amount of time. (I have HDDs that click and have had some for months that still run, but I have also been on the other end of the scale where it clicked and was completely dead the next day) Its up to you, If you have the time then do a reinstall on the current HDD (to rule everything else out) and if needed you can buy a new HDD at a later date
  6. You shouldnt need to no, just plug it in and then windows should pick the drive up when it starts, it should also be listed in the BIOS POST as a plug and play drive or something along those lines
  7. What software did you use to do the backup? Have a look in disk management again and take a screen shot or photo and then post it here, dont take it to a PC shop, we can sort this for FREE for you
  8. Ah - just been pointed out to me that you are NOT on a network :o Nope im afraid you need to use something along the lines of what DSTM has suggested
  9. Yeah thats true, I didnt know linksys started at 192.168.1.100, if thats the case then you may as well just set static IPs and disable DHCP I thought that maybe the options had been changed, so are you saying that the routers IP address on Linksys is 192.168.1.100
  10. If you are using a server then yes you can send messages to users, if its a home PC, you would need to use a piece of software, I am sure that someone out there would have done software for this at some point
  11. Well if your router is dishing out IP addresses, which is what DHCP does.... It could be anything to be honest, Im not familiar with that router so  Routers that have modems built in are fiddly at best, is the router in bridge mode or passsthrough do you know?
  12. Did you change the DHCP settings that I mentioned before we went off topic
  13. Kev, I was meaning to ask you if the extra 5Watts on your home PC spec helps :D Sorry its just my sarcasm is it meant to be 350 and not 305
  14. There should be 3 ports for the speaker wires on the back of the MOBO (some have 5 and some 7) if its 4 years old its probably only got three, GREEN (which is front speakers) BLUE or BLACK (which is back speakers) and RED (which is BASS) If you only have 2.1 speakers chances are they get all their audio from the green port. If you have uninstalled the sound drivers and then rebooted windows it should pick the right ones up again. The speakers could be broke or the onboard sound has given up the ghost. Add in PCI sound cards are around £5 for a basic one. speakers are around £10 for a budget set
  15. At the bottom of the second page you posted it says DHCP You have it starting at 192.16.1.100 It should be starting at 192.168.1.1 which is the routers IP address. Always remember to save and exit and the 50Meg BeeCeeBee mentions is ME wha ha ha (supervillain cackle)
  16. 3.5'' should run off a mains supply not USB 2.5'' can run off USB, I have never seen a 3.5'' run off USB
  17. You need to check the sizes really, when you made a backup was this to another partition of the HDD or is this a branded PC like Dell or HP? Dell or HP actually install a recovery section onto another partition incase your PC needs to be set back to factory settings (virus, OS corruption etc) If you know the size of the HDD you are trying to add that will help as it should be listed. Im not at home right now, but I will post you a screen shot later with some options on you can look here in the meantime Troubleshooting Disk Management: Storage Services; File and Storage Services if you need it doing before I can post a screen shot
  18. If a MOBO is not listed as supported by an OS its normally because the MOBO was released before the OS was launched and this is the case with yours Vista was not around when this board was released thats all. It does support DDR400 which is PC3200 - have a look on the actual RAM sticks sticker and check that they are not ECC ram sticks as is often the case with DDR400 (ECC RAM is for servers and wont work in 99% of mainstream boards) If the RAM is just plain old DDR400 then check that they are seated correctly in the DIMM slots. you will hear both sides of the tabs 'click' when the RAM is fully inserted. failing that one of the DIMM slots could be faulty, check this by removing one RAM stick, does the POST see it? if so then remove it and then try in the other DIMM and then retry with the other RAM stick in both slots.
  19. You will need to reactivate/initalise the disk Go into control panel>system and security>administrative tools>Computer Management>Disk Management (on the left hand side) your drive should be listed there right click on it and I cant remember the exact wording but I think its initialise - just make sure if it asks you to format that you click NO as the data would be lost
  20. All sounds great in theory, problem is it all revolves around using the SAME torrent, same torrent = same data/missing data If you were missing say <5% of a torrent, just get more trackers from another source - simple as
  21. We do not help people with download (torrenting issues) its in the rules and just to let you know its not possible anyway, torrent files are split into segments so that they can be easily downloaded in small chunks from various places at the same time. no software or code would allow you to merge 2 different sections of a file and then combine them into a usable version
  22. No problem at all :) Hope you get it sorted.
  23. If you are certain or fairly certain the lappy is fine, I would be looking at replacing the actual BIOS chip :) get on ebay or a specialist shop online and see what the damage would be
  24. Hmmmmmmmm, speaking of ticking my brain was then :) If I were you I would, plug the 500GB in, partition it into whatever you would like, I personally would do 2x250GB, then use the settings and transfer to move your OS and programs onto one of those partitions, then move the files you want to keep seperate onto the other side of the 250GB, then wipe the 160GB and then again install all of your data you dont want to lose onto that. This way you have 2 SEPERATE HDDs incase one fails, you have 2 seperate partitions on the main disk incase you need to reinstall the OS for any reason. If one of the HDDs were to fail you have 2 lots of 'files you would not lose' thats what I would do if I didnt have servers and everything was always backed up and duplicated over multiple HDDs :D
  25. It depends, it should boot when you press the power button but then say there is an issue with the BIOS rather than just not booting. Im not 100% sure its the BIOS thats the issue here, could be the actual MOBO, power socket connector where it connects to the MOBO most laptops dont even support not having the battery in the lappy and running it direct from the mains, most need the battery to complete the circuit.
