  1. Hi, Did you use a recovery console or was it an Operating system disk? Whats the make and model of the PC? There will be a MOBO (Motherboard) CD that will have the Ethernet drivers on
  2. If I was limited to using just on Suite then it would be ESET over NORTON any day of the week. I have used windows live onecare for a few years now and again it came with 3 licence keys and cost me around £20 I use windows FW (but I know what I am doing ;)) and have MB installed if I ever need it. In the time I have had OneCare I have not had 1 Virus. I installed Norton on a PC the other day at the users request and within 2 days I was asked to remove it..........
  3. Hi, Right your in a bit of a muddle here as you need to be able to access windows in order to create a password reset disk. when you go to safe mode it should not ask for a password and you know its in safe mode as the background is black and it says safe mode in the four corners of the screen. when in safe mode you need to open control panel and then user accounts then see below
  4. LOL - yes although W7 is based on Vista, there are some key differences. I am sure that if you ran the vista driver in compatability mode it would work, but no need now :D Glad its all sorted and you dont have to pull your hair out
  5. hmm thats a weird one - are you using W7 drivers for the printer or Vista compatible ones? what GPU do you have and what driver version you running?
  6. Yes its the 4-4-4-12 which are the timings, change the settings in the BIOS to reflect the 4-4-4-12, it should boot and we will take it from there
  7. Most of the newer cards use 2 x 6pin PCI-E http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/pcie6index.jpg Your PSU should have one or two of the above and then in the GPU box there should be a cable like this http://www.evga.com/support/faq/files/pcie%20pwr%20adapter.jpg
  8. Hi and welcome to fpch :)
  9. I would seriously advise against trying to repair the board, 9/10 if something blows on a MOBO it takes one or more other parts with it. If it is just one dead RAM slot then you could live with that - you just need to see if there are any other issues....
  10. Nvidia and ATI cards use the same interfaces PCI-E there are various versions of PCI-E though so you may want to check that in the MOBO manual. The 8800GTX was a good card a while ago, but they were power hungry so you should have a large enough PSU to cope with any card. You have a HUGE selection of cards available from the Nvidia side you could go the 260GTX, 275,285 or if you have lots of money 295 ATI wise you can go for the 4870, 5850, 5870 but it does all depend on budget and what you use the PC for, as you have an 8800GTX I will assume that you either play games or do video editing (as thats mainly what the higher end cards are for) You need to have a price bracket in mind and then we can go from there
  11. The card is not much shorter than a foot long. If you open the side of your PC - it will say on the side of the PSU what Wattage it is, you may not need a new one, depending on what you have in the PC
  12. In the GPU box there will be a cable that uses 2 MOLEX connectors to provide another 6pin PCI-E :)
  13. Are you using a USB keyboard? USB keyboards do not get recognised until Windows starts up, you need to use a PS2 keyboard and then all should be ok Some MOBOs have an option to enable USB keyboards, but you wont get to the BIOS with a USB keyboard which is a pain
  14. This normally happens when the files are extremely big or you do not have write access to the specific folder. what exactly are you trying to move?
  15. It may necessarily not be the PSU, it could be the MOBO. Its hard to diagnose, but if you look into the PC when the PSU (power supply) when it is on at the wall and the PSU switch on the back of the PSU is on, there should be some lights on the MOBO (Motherboard)
  16. Sounds like the card you put in fried something on the MOBO and it was shut down to prevent damage (this sometimes resets the BIOS) you will need to enter the BIOS and set the first boot device to HDD as it will currently be set to CD/DVDROM It will tell you how to enter the BIOS when the PC starts its normally del or a F key :)
  17. Yes the DRAM timings are what you are after - it will tell you the exact timings that are needed on the RAM stick itself (on a sticker) or on the box they came in. If you need help then let me know :)
  18. Its not the boot controlller order you need. The boot controller will be the fact that you have multiple controllers, that can control multiple HDD ports on the MOBO There will be a section that says boot order then it will say the likes of 1 CD/DVDROM 2 Floppy disk 3 HDD There may be a 4 and 5 and so on, but you need to put the 1st one to HDD then Disable the rest, then SAVE and EXIT the BIOS
  19. The 9800GTX is not as good price vs performance as the likes of a 260GTX, but as previously mentioned these cards are huge and you need to check they will fit in your case and that the PSU can handle it (both from a connections point of view 1 6pin PCI-E and another 6/8pin PCI-E and a Wattage point)
  20. The 260GTX is a cracking card and can be picked up for around £100 in the UK The problem with these types of cards though is that they are massive compared to your previous card, you need to check if they will fit in your case - the 260GTX I kid you not is not much short of a foot long
  21. No you only should run one AV - use Avira or Avast over AVG. I would suggest that something at startup is causing you issues, but you need the PC to boot before you can edit the startup programs
  22. There are people in the UK that do similar for charity.. Its more the amount of lights though rather than them flashing to themes
  23. You need a crossover cable and not a standard Ethernet Cat5 Do you not have a router? this would be of more benefit than using a crossover cable, and you could use the lappy wireless
  24. Leave the Windows OS disk out for now Enter the BIOS change the first boot device to CD/DVDROM and then SAVE and EXIT the BIOS. re enter the BIOS and see if the first boot device is still set as the CD/DVDROM if it is then put the OS disk in and then exit - it should boot from the CD/DVDROM Are you using an ATA disk or an SATA disk as if its SATA you need to have the MOBO drivers on a floppy mid way into the install
  25. LOL - im just a member helping another member out here.........
