Hi Nev, How bl**dy frustrating. I uninstalled CD Burner XP and restarted the system, one of the drives was ok the other still locked. Reinstalling means I'm back where I was at the beginning, both drives locked on startup but both can be freed up if I start then close CD Burner XP. I suppose I'll just have to accept that as a work round. Regards, Bob.

Hi Nev, Thanks for that, I have run scans, everything seems ok. Task manager shows all sorts of stuff running, the most of which is just gobbledygook to me, however I checked out MNSAccessU.exe which is something to do with "CD Burner XP" I opened CD Burner XP and the drive then worked properly. Still working after closing it down but will wait till rebooting to try again. If it does it again I may just uninstall the program. Many thanks.

Hi Ray, Yes both drives are listed in Device manager.

I have 2 CD/DVD drives fitted to my PC and am unable to open the trays whilst running windows. If I press the eject buttons during the boot up sequence they work ok but as soon as wiindows loads they refuse to work. It would appear that there is some software running which is locking the drives but I can't find what's doing it. How can I determine what the problem is and resolve it. Many thanks for any help as always. Bob.

Hi Ken, Thanks for that, looks like not too much to worry about for the time being. Regards, Bob.

I guess I won't be the only one to ask this but as Microsoft are ending support for XP after April next year a lot of people are going to be left High and dry. Yes we could "upgrade" to Win 7 but for me that means about 12 new licences and certainly some of my current software will not run in Win 7. This will mean a huge expense which frankly I can't afford. The question is will it possible to download all the existing updates to use in the event of needing a re-install or will it mean we are all stuck with just XP SP3? Any ideas? Bob.

Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?

A very interesting article which seems to confirm my rather cynical view of things. A new system which has been implemented by numerous manufacturers before it's been thoroughly tested and debugged! -
Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Ken, Yep, that's the card. Latest driver and PROSet software installed this morning. I think I might just leave things as they are, I don't think I'm going to suffer from not having the extra speed, I'm getting 21Mb download using the wireless connection and anything I need to transfer over the network is not likely to be a problem at the speeds I'm getting. It's just we all want to see what "it says on the tin" I guess. Thanks for your efforts. -
Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Yes Device manager has settings to limit connection to a,b, or g or to allow auto selection which is default. Nowhere is there a choice to set N only -
Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Had a look at advanced settings in the hub3 and there is an option to set to Wireless N only, default is b,g,n. However the same screen suggests the current speed is actually 130Mbps, odd as the adapter reports this as 54Mbps. Maybe I am getting more than it seems? -
Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?

Interesting, I tried the Hub 2 and connection speed is immediately 130Mbps, as I suspected Hub 3 is a poor "upgrade" -
Can't connect with Wireless "N" ?
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Many thanks, I had heard some people had had problems with the Hub3, I may just revert to the Hub2 which I still have to see if that works any better. What a shame BT can't provide a genuine "upgrade"! -
I've just had BT infinity installed with the Homehub 3 and have upgraded my laptop wireless adapter with an Intel 4965AGN card to take advantage of the increased speed of the "N" connection. The installation worked seemingly correctly and I'm connected to the hub but only at 54.0 Mbps which is exactly the same as my old wireless "G" card. I understood I should be able to get up to 300 Mbps with the new card. Any ideas why not? Win XP Pro with SP3, Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop with T9300 CPU

[Solved] Selecting text larger than screen?

Hi Ken, Yes thank you that is very helpful, cheers. -
[Solved] Selecting text larger than screen?
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Sorry maybe I didn't make it very clear. I'm left clicking the start of the text then holding left mouse button down and dragging down to select the text. -
I'm sure there must be a simple solution for this but, when I try to selet text in Word 2000, if the text is larger than the screen will display, when I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen the text scrolls upward so fast that I can't stop at the point I want. Is it possible to slow this down at all? Win 7 and office 2000 Many thanks.

[Solved] Network not working
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks Ken, Once again you are right on the money, I had tried re-booting the router a couple of times already with no success. This time I left it switched off for a couple of minutes then switched on again but it was another 20 minutes before the system started to work properly again. Thanks again......problem solved! -
Hi All, Having just returned to work after the break I find my network in the office is not working. I have 4 PCs all with XP Pro SP3 on them. All worked together via a Netgear DG834G router/modem, with file and print sharing and all connected to the Internet before the break. This morning I can only get internet on 1 machine and can't access files on this machine from the others. I've tried repairing the connection on each machine, no joy. Is there any way I can clear all of the existing network details fromm all machines and start again? Or any othe advise you can give me. Sorry but this is now very urgent as I am unable to work without this operating correctly. Regards, Bob.

Well it looks like ClickFree was the cause. After the restore I tried to re-install the device. It did install ok and carried out it's first backup but failed to connect to the wireless network. 2 hours on the phone to their tech support and still no joy. It's going back for a refund as soon as I can arrange it. Of course it has meant another system restore which again would only work in "Safe Mode" not sure why that is but at least it's back to normal now. Thanks for your advise. Bob. P.S. can you mark the thread solved?

OK an update on what's going on. I tried to uninstall IE8 but it wouldn't do it just seemed to freeze up. I figured maybe some kind of infection so ran a full scan with MSSE, MBAM, and trend housecall on-line scanners. Nothing reported on any of them. Finally I tries to Run ESET on-line scanner, it got to about 7% and just froze. After a bit more searching, the net (on another machine) I discovered others are having the same issues as me after installing a "ClickFree Wireless backup device". I installed one of these last week and since then I've had this problem, also the ClickFree doesn't work and refuses to play despite following all the faultfinding stuff in the manual. So I thought, just uninstall it and try again but I couldn't find any way to do that. No bother I thought I'll do a system restore. I tried 6 dates that were prior to installing the Clickfree, none of them worked. Finally I tried system restore in "Safe Mode" and managed to get everything back to 9th December. Clickfree has gone and things appear to be back to normal. Now running ESET on-line again just in case. Damn shame if it does turn out to be the ClickFree thing as I thought I'd found an ideal solution to automatic backup.

Hi Ken, thanks for your reply, I have a feeling that the issue is not unique to IE8 as I also have Chrome installed and have noticed the problem albeit less severe with this. I may just uninstalla nd reintall IE8 anyway to at least eliminate this as a potential issue.

Recently my internet access has started to play up, using IE8 sometimes a page will take several minutes to load then often it will not load everything. Speedtest suggests my download speed is 3Mb/S which is as good as I've ever had, I've tried resetting IE8 and disabling add-ons etc but still no joy. Any ideas? XP Pro with SP3 on a Lenovo 3000 intel dual core. I have my suspisions that windows is not entirely healthy and was wondering about using XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option. However the laptop didn't come with a CD as it has a recovery partition on the hard drive. This is fine for a total factory restore but I don't want to go through all the re-installation of everything else as well. Can I use another XP Pro SP3 cd I have to do the repair? Many thanks as usual for any advise. Bob.

System Idle Process 99% ???
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Funny how sometimes we get so engrossed in finding a solution to a problem only to find a simple answer. The drive finally gave up and died this evening before I had time to re-install to another drive. Then whilst searching for a replacement drive I came across a cloned copy of the complete system dated 15th November this year. I'd completely forgotten I'd made this. Bunged it in and Bob's your fathers brother. Yippee. I tried connecting the old drive via a usb caddy but no joy so it's defo fried. Anyway all's well and apart from a very few files to restore from the last 4 weeks which will be simple. Thanks again. P.S. this isn't really the place to discuss I know but the reason I asked what you played was that I play 6 string axe blues. Not very well but improving all the time ;-) -
System Idle Process 99% ???
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for your help and advise I think I'm going to have to start aain from scratch and re-install the lot on a new HDD. I have all the useful data backed up, it's just gonna take all day to restore everything. All the best. -
System Idle Process 99% ???
pilotbob replied to pilotbob's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for the link, I've downloaded the fiju diagnostic but can't run it I guess I need to boot into dos to do that, How??? I can't think back to the days of MSDOS and win3.1 However I reran chkdsk /r and also tried HDAT2 to repair the disk. Both reported having found and repaired bad sectors. I'm guessing repair means flagging faulty sectors so the OS wont use them Y/N. Still the system is unstable, I tried to clone using clonezilla which failed at 86% due I guess to the bad sectors. Where do you suggest I go now? I really don't want to trash the whole system and start again as I know I'm not gonna be able to lay my hands on all the passwords/keys etc. I'll need. .............. yeah I know I should have kept a backup.......
