Developing Silverlight w/o VS2008
NewsBot posted a topic in Microsoft Products Support & Discussions
I don't have VS2008 at my new job, but I would like to work with silverlight as an possible medium of presenting videos. Is there another way to develop silverlight without VS2008 that isn't a complete headache? I found out today I cannot use the Expression versions to develop Silverlight apps, so I'm kinda sitting on my hands right now... More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds -
Your top tech-moment of idiocy...
NewsBot posted a topic in Microsoft Products Support & Discussions
What's the dumbest tech-moment you've ever had? Here's mine: While in highschool I started getting into graphic design, and wanted to get into web-development. Problem was, I had absolutely no clue what web-development was, or how to go about getting started. I had a friend of mine who has a couple years developing pages when I had absolutely no experience what-so-ever. I asked him, "Darrell, will you make me a webpage for $20?" to which he responded, "Just learn the code and do it yourself." "The Code" he says? There's a code that is needed to make webpages? This was just a few weeks after getting my very first computer, so I was still and all-around computer-idiot. "Can you give me the code?" I asked, thinking there was a short series of keystrokes you type into MS-DOS, and *pop*, out comes a webpage. Yes, I seriously thought that. Along with that, I thought "HTML" stood for "Hotmail"*, and "SWF" Stood for "Star Wars File", since one of the earliest flash websites I visited was a Star Wars Website. So what was your pinnacle of stupidity in history? *when I finally started learning HTML, I told my friends I could write "Hotmail", and they should learn to do "Hotmail" with me More... I am trying to write a simple text editor, and so far I have the Open and Save/As functions working, however when I attempt to save a file to c:\, it tells me that I do not have permissions to do so.* I am running as admin as well as having UAC turned on, so how do I enable use of UAC as needed? I am also currently running VB2008 Express in Administrator mode. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Afternoon All, I'm in the process of writing a today screen for my app, by today I mean like dashboard/overview of what's going on in the software. I'm wondering if their are any good tutorials and effective designs which you guys appreciate and like. I like Microsoft Access 2007's overview screen but i'm not sure how they have achieved it. Love to see some screenshots posted of your today screens and anyones you have come across which you like. Come on get posting! (mine is so bad that i'm not posting it. lol) More... Hi all, Let me preface this posting by saying so far I've had no major problems with Vista (run it on all my PC's and have since RTM hit MSDN) and much prefer Vista over XP. However, I've just gone through my first non positive moment with Vista and it goes like this... It was time for a reinstall of my main home PC. It's had release version of Vista on it for over a year now and you know what development machines get like - constant installation of reinstallation of programs and tools eventually make for a slower and messy experience. So*- I do a base of Vista Ultimate x86 on my*machine. All is well until I notice that the wireless connection keeps getting dropped and then reconnected - every 30 seconds or so. I saw this a lot in the early betas, but haven't experienced it with RTM before. My wireless card is a D-link DWA-130 Wireless N USB device, so I go to the D-Link site for the latest driver and see to my horror that I'm using the latest version, which was released in FEB 2007 and is marked as BETA!! :| A few reboots, uninstalling and reinstalling of the drivers don't help, but as luck would have it, the connection stays up just long enough so I can get to Windows update and I notice there's an update over there for my D-Link card (not written by D-link themselves of course). But, the connection keeps getting dropped before Windows update finishes, so by this stage it's starting to get annoying. Of course, I can't just download this update on my laptop and stick it on a USB drive and then onto the desktop, because Windows Update only works on the PC you're updating itself. So in the end I had to find an older Wireless G card, place it (along with the D-Link still connected) into the desktop, use that older card for the connection and get to Windows update to pull down the updated D-link driver. GAAAHH! :s It's stuff like this that is leading to a lot of the (in my opinion) ridiculus press for Vista. Now, this isn't actually Microsoft's fault, but they're the ones in the firing line. For D-Link to not update beta drivers in over a year for a product that is still shipping and available in stores is beyond idiotic. It's also the last time I'm buying anything from them (I've also had a bad router from them that reboot itself constantly). Sorry for venting, but my simple reinstall turned into a multi hour event that shouldn't have been so hard! All is well now though...! :D More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hey everyone. I decoded to write a little test app to compare the speed of DataSet / Table adapter to 'LINQ to SQL'. This test focused solely on inserts The app loops 10,000 times, inserting a row into a datatable (or in LTS, it adds the row to the table equivalent in the DataContext) Results ===== It took the code 293 ms to load the rows into the DataTable, and then 16030ms to update the database using the tableadapter. It took 474ms to load the rows into the datacontext, and then a whopping 29550ms to complete the .SubmitChanges() How can this be, I was expecting LTS to win hands down, but for now it looks like I'll be sticking to my datasets! Just wondered if anyone here has joined the Microsoft Ramp Up program. If so, has anyone finished it without any problems? I started a few months back. Have been playing with C# for nearly a year. Have been a VC++ programmer for over 10 years. Chose the Aspiring Developer track (C#) as I don't have VB or Java background and thought it'd be better if I started at the beginning. I want to go ahead and take my MCTS so I'm taking this as a familiarisation exercise with the way Microsoft structure their exams, learning etc. Anyways, I completed the first 2 assessments ok and came to take my 3rd one a couple of weeks ago. However, the first question had code samples in VB. As I stepped through more and more of them I found all the code questions were VB (although the page title is C# track) and most of the questions were todo with modules that I'd not progressed to yet (ASP and data tables which I think are level 5). I emailed Microsoft about this but it takes 5 days for that section to reply everytime I point out what the problem is and that it is nothing to do with what they suggested. Does this sound familiar to anyone? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
