  5. From: M*** C**** Senior golf club mem^h^h^h^hMicrosoft has had considerable In^h^hpartner brib^h^h^hfeedback on advancing the lead time for the Windows Vista Capable, thereby broadening the programs duration prior to Windows Vista launch. Greedy partn^h^h^hFeedback has also strongly highlighted the need to maximize the prof^h^h^hpercentage of systems designated as Windows Vista Capable and carrying the Windows Vista Capable Logo. In response to this mone^h^h^hfeedback, and to further increase the profi^h^h^hability of the Windows Vista Capable Program an^h^hto help with PC sales prior to Windows Vista launch later this year, Microsoft is making 2 changes to the Windows Vista Capable Program: Elimination of WDDM as a technical requirement for Windows Vista Capable. From: W*** P**** I went over the new plan with Renee tonight. Not surprisingly, she was^h^his pleased with the outcome. I told her we wanted to communicate to OEMs and retail first, and then they can cascade their own communication. 7. Quero is a free add-on for Internet Explorer, which I am developing in my spare time since 2004. Quero is not yet another toolbar for IE but showcases the integration of the address bar, search box and find on page dialog into a new combined "awesome" address/search bar. Additionally, I implemented an optional ad blocker for IE since advertising got so annoying on some sites. You decide when you are in the mood for viewing ads with Quero. Main features: Customize IE7: resize/shorten your address bar again Search instantly from the address bar Ad & Flash blocker Quick Type & Find (supersedes the find dialog) Highlight search terms Cursor search Go to text URLs Paste and go Full page zoom Display favicons in taskbar IDN support with anti-spoofing techniques Quero respects your privacy (spyware & adware free, no auto-update) Download http://www.quero.at/ http://channel9.msdn.com/Photos/387041.jpg More... 8. Hi. Hoping someone can help here... I'm trying to get the DNS API to query NAPTR records (using the DnsQuery function with type DNS_TYPE_NAPTR). It seems that NAPTR queries succeed, and in QuickWatch I can see that the information is there (if garbled) in the DNS_RECORD.Data union but there's no NAPTR member of this union to properly/safely get the data. Does anyone know how I can interpret these results? I have found code samples that attempt to access DNS_RECORD.Data.NAPTR, but this doesn't compile for me under VS2005 ('NAPTR' : is not a member of '_DnsRecordA::'). It seems bizarre that Microsoft would include the search type in windns.h but not provide a structure to handle the response, so I'm guessing I've done something wrong. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks. 10. I am encountering two problems with 3rd party controls where if I try to use/add a component VS crashes. The only error in the event log is; .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A06491A) (0) The problem occurs specifically when I try to Add a WCF service to a client application Add a dataset as the datasource to a grid control - all other controls from this vendor work (using a completely different vendors components than above) . I can add a dataset as normal, but as soon as I click the smart tag on the grid and define e.g. customersBindingSource, VS crashes and I get the error in the event log (Vista)I have followed a bunch of suggestions from customer support like disabling UAC etc to no avail What I would like to know is if it is possible to get far more meaningful information from VS. What I DETEST a lot is when crashed occur and the information is sent to MS. I need to know what is happening to help resolve problems. I doubt that the problem is with the 3rd party controls fully as this would affect far more people thnn it presently does, somewhere along the line there is an issue I need to try to get to the bottom of. 11. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2008/feb08/02-28BrooksQA.mspx PressPass: It sounds like your strategy is to have different price points in different countries and regions, depending on whether they’re developed or emerging markets. What will the changes look like when they’re in place? Brooks: Our research, along with feedback from promotions by our retail partners, has illustrated powerfully to us the degree to which customer needs vary, not only between developed and emerging markets, but also within markets. But the desire for the best value remains the same. As such, the Windows Vista editions involved and specific price decreases will likewise vary from region to region across the globe. Can anyone say the word gouge? Of course you can. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  13. I was having problems with MS Visual Studio .NET 2003 in getting it to create a new Web Application Project.* I suspect the issue was with its hooking into IIS5 (Windows XP Pro).* The problem was so bad i went ahead and deinstalled both .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 from the system, deinstalled IIS and deinstalled MS Visual Studio .NET 2003.* I then reinstalled IIS.* I went to install VS but after a few minutes i got the error: Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 Setup Internal Error 2908. {1D377656-ACBB-44E2-BFEB-4CC6FB0FDA33} Hunh?!* Anyone have an idea on how to get around this issue?* Thanks. 14. We are currently in the process of migrating to a build server (in order to go for Continous Integration, etc.) We had a fairly big debate re MSBuild vs NAnt with pros and cons for each. Could you possibly provide your personal experience with both tools? Recommend a "better" approach. Our environment is 100% Visual Studio 2008 with 100% .NET development, no Java no other stuff. * More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  15. Microsoft recently updated the terms of their Open and Select EULAs to try to put a stop to bargain-basement software licensing. Thing is, this raises the question of how Microsoft can legally add "Not For Resale" clauses to EULAs. The posts to the article's comment thread are nearly unanimous in putting it down as being unenforcable.... and the company in question has found a work-around anyway. So with the launch event in March, can Microsoft really go after people for selling on their freebie copies of Visual Studio and Windows Server? ...because MS got eBay to close an auction a friend of mine made after he put up his free copy of VS2005 after attending that launch event. //not that I'd be selling mine, I have legitimate uses for the complimentary licenses for VS, WS, and SQL Server. I'd ask on twitter but of course it's broken big time for me at the moment, and has been all morning. Those guys really need to sort their stuff out as the service has become extremely intermittent and totally unreliable.* Complaints have been rumbling for several weeks now and I sense some other company*may just come, steal their initiative*and grab their market share pretty soon. 19. Although OOP has made great gains in Microsoft's frameworks, Java,*and other technologies; the fact still remains that the daily chores of most coders involve integrating an ever-expanding universe of technolgies that claiim to solve the difficulties of providing a universal solution to distinguishing between data and object visualization (or for those who speak the Queen's dialect; 'visualisation'). The features that*each new approach faces seem to have the same characteristics: 1. Pictures are worth a thousand words. 2. Graphical representations of models*for integration*require ten-******thousand data-words, or even ten-million. 3. Translation has become a lost art. Add to that; the fact that so many who want to code, know nothing of anything but the ubiquitousness of the browser; and you have a recipe for confusion. It seems that some simplification*needs to be understood on a global level for any new technology to gain foothold. For this, I do not have a solution yet. Any communications about my opinions, views and understandings of*development*are welcome in English, Deutsch, Francais, Espanol, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  25. From an Engadget article: http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif article wrote: ...although Intel's 915 chipset was initially rejected as incompatible with Vista, MS execs flatly admit that "In the end, we lowered the requirements to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded" and "We are caving to Intel. We worked the last 18 months to drive the UI experience and we are giving this up." On top of that, it seems that the company was getting direct feedback from retailers that the stickers were confusing, with Wal-Mart appealing directly to HP to pull Vista Capable stickers from low end machines, and an MS exec saying that "I was in Best Buy listening to people and can tell you this did not come clear to customers. We set ourselves up." Although, I don't know if not mucking w/ the "capable" label would've helped Vista's fortune any. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
