Ted Kummert, S. Somasegar and Bill Laing are the heads of state of the Data Division, Developer Division, and Windows Server respectively. Since we just launched three major products, Visual Studio 2008 (RTM), SQL Server (not shipped yet) and Windows Server 2008 (RTM) we thought it would be a good idea to get the three leaders of these product organizations to sit down together and talk about how they work together as divisions and as leaders of divisions. So, how do leaders work together effectively? What do heads of product groups actually do? How technically involved with product development are vice presidents? How do they work together to minimize technical reduncancy across divisions (innovation happens; sometime innovative technologies arise independently and in parallel. They may represent the same solution to a given problem or problem set. What's a VP to do in this case?). As always, it's an extreme pleasure to get to talk with senior leaders of Microsoft who are responsible for a large chunk of Microsoft's continued success as a business in an insanely competitive industry that constantly changes. You've heard all about the products that have launced today if you follow product launch events and read the news. It's truly a momentous day for all of us at Microsoft and especially for*you, the consumer and developer*who use*and rely upon these great technologies. Now, meet the heads of state who are responsible (and ultimately accountable) for your overall satisfaction. We're all lucky to have Ted, Soma and Bill running the show for SQL, VS and Windows Server. Enjoy! Low res version here. Apparently the company has been having a littletrouble stock wise with the release of some new data regarding their online clickableads. Other analysts, though, expect Google stillwill deliver stellar earnings and revenue growth this year." * More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Remote Debugger for new processes
NewsBot posted a topic in Microsoft Products Support & Discussions
I'm doing a lot of remote debugging lately, and I'm having problems when debugging an app that throws an exception during startup. I can attach a remote debugger to a running process, but then I'll miss the errors in the beginning. I would like the ability to start a new process already attached. Is this possible with the VS2005 remote debugger as-is? If not, is it possible to build some sort of bootstrapper that can run, attach the debugger and then launch my own app? Process.Start won't do since it'll launch a new, unattached process. I was thinking of doing Assembly.Load() for my EXE and looking for the static void Main() to run, but that seems overcomplicated. Am I missing something trivial here? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds -

I'm doing some research on different PHP Frameworks, and I came across Prado today. I checked out Symfony, CodeIgniter and some others, but Prado stands out in that it resembles .NET pretty closely. Check out this example provided on their website: Codebehind: class LoginPage extends TPage { *** public function loginclicked($sender,$param) *** { *** ** $username = $this->Username->Text; *** ** $password = $this->Password->Text; *** ** //do login stuff *** } } Markup: *** *** ** Login *** ** Username: *** ** *** ** Password: *** ** *** ** *** Anybody ever used this framework? What are your experiences with it? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I'm just wondering about something and so I figured the best place to ask was channel9. (yeah i know ambitious of me). Can anyone give me a solid well thought out reason for keeping 90% or more (or even any) of your business logic in SQL sprocs? I've moved into a new position at a new company and the application I am working on uses sprocs to handle most of its logic. I'm trying to find a reason as to why this might be beneficial vs some other more OO technique. Please keep in mind that: ****** this is SQL 2000 ****** this is an ASP.Net 2.0 app ****** this is IIS 6.0 Upgrading is not an option at this point, but I am trying to make an argument for MVC and Linq2SQL with a better Data Model. Thanks in advance More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I’m beginning work on a re-write of one of our major VB6 programs.* This program uses several COM+ components, also written in VB6, which I am going to re-write (and re-architect while I’m at it) into C# using VS 2008.* Several of the methods I used in the COM+ components returned various information, like ADO Recordset, etc.* However, I also wanted to return any error information that might have occurred on the server while it was executing, to the client application.* Since I didn’t think I could return the VB6 Err object to the calling client application I instead would return the Err.Source, Err.Number and Err.Description as parameters in the COM+ method’s signature to the client application.* I would assume that the same thing would hold true for any Exception object in .NET; specifically that the Exception object would be a part of the process under which the WCF service runs and so it could not be sent to the calling application. So, I want to do basically the same thing that I did with the COM+ components, but use WCF instead.* Of course I can return the Exception object’s Message property*and possibly InnerMessage property in the service’s parameter list, but I would like to know if there is anything else analogous to the Err.Number and Err.Source properties in VB6?
