  6. I just saw a few clips on YouTube with two comedians who claimed to have sex with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Very funny clips, but why was the f-word always beeped out? Can I even write "(I need to watch my language)ing" here on Channel9 without getting censored or even banned? I don't see the point of beeping the words, everyone knows what they are saying. It reminds me of an episode where someone from Denmark went to a restaurant: "I would like a bloody beef" (a red steak)*and the waiter replies "Maybe you would like some (I need to watch my language)ing fries too?" :-) More... 7. At the risk of sounding like a person who says the best thing about a vehicle is its engine, and saying that the wheels are unimportant, I will nevertheless ask; What is your most useful/favourite feature in .NET? I favour generics above all. Why generics? The length and breadth of its implementation, and the fact that it has 'set up' so much of the current .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 features. Why does Blowdart for instance champion cardspace? This is a simple quest to enlighten people that may or may not have glanced at a feature (personally i've not looked at cardspace yet). More... 11. 1) download AVG free edition from here 2) run the setup, select Custom Installation, disable the "Resident Shield", "E-mail scanner" components and leave only the Office plugin checked (Plugin for Microsoft Office 2000/XP) 3) save the following text in a .REG file and run it: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Attachments] "ScanWithAntiVirus"=dword:00000002 4) close all IE windows 5) open this address in a new IE window: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm 6) download one of the eicar.com at the bottom of the page, if everything went well AVG should warn you that the file is infected now you can have AVG scan all the files downloaded from IE, including ActiveX components before they get installed, without having to keep any resident/network scanner. since e-mail attachments and office documents are also scanned you can avoid keeping bloated antivirus engines running thus saving a lot of system resources :O I chose AVG because it's the only common free antivirus that has an office plugin but if you have norton, mcafee, kaspersky they all have one with this "trick" my eee PC is now a lot faster because I got rid of resident AV bloatware running in background thanks to Bruce Morgan for letting me know of this windows policy (the one set with the .reg file) I never heard about :O More... 17. Here's some psuedo code... int[] ids = new int[1000]; string[] names = new string[1000] for (int i = 0 ; i < 1000 ; i++) { // open customer001txt through customer999.txt // update the id and name array avariables } This is a VERY simplified version.. the real project consists of opening up hundereds of encrypted database files that must be decrypted, parsed, and then arrays in the parent class/thread need to be updated with info... The problem is the single thread version now works fine, but takes forever.. most of the burden is decrypting and unpacking the database files.. if I could multi-thread this I could cut down processing time big time I believe.. Right now I am trying to use QueueUserWorkItem() and just load up all the file names using the object state var.. but because my worker function is static, I cant figure out how to update the arrays in the parent thread safely.. This seems like it would be a fairly common task.. use threads to pull a bunch of information from hundereds of files/databases and populate a parent table/structure with info... I'm not looking to be spoon fed, just a little guidance. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Please help. Thanks! More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  21. I've got an app which carries out some messaging over TCP/IP.* In the course of running the app, I spawn all sorts of threads.* I'm running into cases where the port is already in use.* I'd like to check that the port is avilable before I spin the entire application into gear. After a bit of googling, I haven't seen any better suggestions than just trying to create a socket and catching the SocketException if the port is already in use.* Is there a "proper" way to check that the port is open and avoid using the catch for control flow? 25. From Effective C++, Thrid Edition: TR1 ("Technical Report 1") is a specification for new functionality being added to C++'s standard library. This functionality takes the form of new class and function templates for things like hash tables, reference-counting smart pointers, regular expressions, and more. TR1 itself is just a document. As I write this in early 2005, the document has not been finalized, and its URL is subject to change. So, what does this mean for Microsoft's Visual C++? What's being added to our suite of native libraries to support TR1? What new features will you find most useful? Stephan T. Lavavej is a developer on the VC++ team who is implementing some of the features that will ship as part of a TR1 VC++*"CTP" some time in the near future... He's really passionate about C++ and here we dig into some of his favorite new TR1 features and he explains how they work and why C++ developers should use them by default. Much of the time is spent on the whiteboard. One of the really interesting new features of TR1 is shared_ptr (shared pointer) which provides some useful automation (memory safety) for native developers playing with pointers. shared_ptr is also performant as well as predictable. Good stuff. Learn. Enjoy. Click here for low res download file. Listen to the podcast(MP3) Listen to the podcast(WMA) Download the Video Watch the Video More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
