my computer has been 'taken over' by this error message, supposedly from Microsoft support. it claims that there is a hacker and if I close the page/ignore the message Microsoft will be forced to disable my computer, shut it down to protect their network. how can I verify that this is a ligitimate message from Microsoft? it's asking me to call a 833 number listed so they can walk me thru the process of removing the virus. the message says it's a too free number for Free Checkup. then it asks for my user name and password. i'm suspicious. I turned my computer on and this warning pops up telling me to call their support team, apparently my computer has been compromised or so I was gathering. The lady on the other end told me to press the windows key along with R. After doing so I clicked ok and something else popped up. After having a bad feeling about it I lied to her my computer shut down and would not turn back on. Have I opened up my computer for them? If so what should i do? More...

Currently, Windows Defender flags the EaseUS Todo Backup Free software installer executable as a Potentially Unwanted Software if you have enabled PUA Protection through PowerShell. It is a popular and widely used backup tool so I would like to get to the bottom of if it is a legitimate detection or a false positive. Screenshot of the detection: https://i.gyazo.com/8097338f12fcab6db1ba33c3e96d3e17.png I sent the file in for analysis and this was my first attempt here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/submission/301d75ab-ad73-46af-812c-5c712b0965d0 The response was they were unable to detect it and wanted me to reply with more info...Seeing no option on the page to reply I simply went ahead to create a new submission with more details. In the second submission I provided screenshots as well as an explanation of it being detected as a PUA but was completely brushed off: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/submission/017acc37-248f-4373-8703-df8eb09b9171 As you can see in this second submission, whoever on the Windows Defender team that looked at this submission cannot read and thought I was submitting an inquiry for a new detection - it clearly says "Incorrect detection" in my submission. This is beginning to turn into a waste of my time and patience, I am asking if someone competent can help look into this? Thank you, Mike More...

I'm wondering if I need to use the Kaspersky uninstall removal tool. I uninstalled it through Programs, but am wondering if "remnants" of it are preventing Defender from turning on. I've already tried the tips about manually starting it through command prompt and going through the Action Center. Tried to reinstall Defender, but it wouldn't, as it's already installed, but won't turn on. Any thoughts out there? I'm trying to do this for an elderly lady. Very frustrating!! Thanks, Chris More...

Hello, I was pointed here by an MS rep during a live chat and I am not sure if it is the right place (or category) but here goes. I am launching a standalone exe (test version) of a visual designer and generating the following error: "Error message is: Access Violation at 0x00486773 (tried to read from 0x00000010), program terminated. LastCP is 'RF' The standard, current working version of the application works ine as I imagine that it asks for elevated privileges during install and thus works fine. From research, I think the error is from trying to write to the keystore from a non priveleged application and so it fails. But what can I do about it? I recently installed windows 10 and wish to take full advantage of the security, hence i need to protect myself from ransomware by creating a one drive account. apparently my email address is associated with two accounts, one personal that i just created and one business that i don't recall creating. At any rate, when i try to set up one drive, it won't accept my email with the new password i set up for personal account, so i try to change password and it tells me the email address is not associated with an account. what should i try now? https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.com/api/images/af179370-494d-4a5b-b8d0-980dc916d947?upload=true This is a screenshot I took of a window that has been appearing out of nowhere on my computer for no reason at all, saying that there is spyware and a virus on my laptop, and that I visited an illegal website that I would end up in prison for, and asking for my username and password. When it first appeared a week ago, I assumed it was just a scam, and I shut down my laptop so it would go away. Also, on Monday this exact same window appeared again saying the exact same thing and asked for my username and password. In response, I shut down my laptop again so it would go away. A few minutes ago today it appeared again, and I have handled it the same way again. However, since this window has been frequently appearing on my laptop for no reason at all, it is making me anxious. I know I have asked this before, but I want to ask again just to be absolutely sure. Is this a real warning from Microsoft about a virus and spyware on my laptop, or is it just a scam? More...

Just in the last couple of days, a laptop that my husband was using had several popups. One is one of the red screen alerts and another was an automated recording with a place to put your Microsoft user id and password. In the recording it kept saying that my laptop had a security breech that contained pornographic content and it was stealing all the information on my laptop including pictures, financial information, passwords, and personal information. It also said if I clicked out of the window my computer would be shut down and all information stored on that computer would be lost. It gave the number of 855-202-6733 to call immediately for an operator to help walk us thru to get rid of the hack/virus and to protect the computer. When my husband called the number, all he got was a busy signal. He did this before he let me know about any of this. We ended up having to shut the computer completely down, unplug it, and reboot it an hour later where we immediately ran a deep detailed security scan of the computer. I'd like to know if this is truly a scam or if it is real and I just happened to do the right thing by shutting down the computer and then running the scan. We have Norton security software as MacAfee does not seam to work with Microsoft Edge and was constantly giving us false warnings and alerts. With MacAfee, we also had a computer crash due to their programming that had been hacked as well as was harassed with phone calls and emails stating our computer was under attack by people who did not speak good English and were very belligerent with us. We finally had to contact our state's office that deals with harassment of this sort after we started logging the number of calls and emails we'd received. I do not trust MacAfee. Thank you for your patience and I look forward to hearing from you soon regarding this issue. Ela Johnson More...
