In addition to the iPlayer BBC programmes are now available on iTunes. Joe Duffy, Huseyin Yildiz, Daan Leijen, Stephen Toub and I gathered in a conference room in building 122 to dig into the Task Parallel Library infrastructure. You've heard about the Parallel Computing Platform that Microsoft is working a few months ago in an interview with Anders Hejlsberg and Joe Duffy. We didn't go too deep in that talk. It was an introduction to the Parallel Computing Platform. Here, we take a dive down into the technical rabbit hole with Daan, Joe, Stephen and Huseyin. Daan is an MSR reseacher who's work has been instrumental in bringing TPL and the Parallel Extensions for .NET to life. Of course, Joe is the guy who invented PLINQ (he*wrote the original Think Week paper on it*and Bill*was impressed!)*and is a lead developer on the Parallel Computing Platform team. Stephen is the Program Manager (and is the one driving and scheduling many of the interviews you will see covering*Parallel Computing Platform here on C9*- Thanks, Stephen!)*and Huseyin is a developer who recently joined the group and is already making a big impact. Most of the time here*is spent on the whiteboard with Daan. Make some time for this conversation. There's an awful lot to learn here. Enjoy! Click here for the low res download. Hey niners, I had just recently installed Vista Ultimate. After installing, I noticed that my second HD became a read only drive. I can see the drive and I can read files off of the drive, but I can't write anything to the drive. I gave the Users group Full control in terms of permissions, but the drive is still marked as read only. Any suggestions (I'd like to stay away from formatting please.)? More... Hello, I am planning on developing a lot of Word templates for a current project i'm working on but i'm very worried about compatability. I am writing my documents in Docx format and writing some default template text in the documents which will more than likley be changed by my users. My software is going to perform a mail merge and fill the documents with data. My problem is this, can my software talk to the Docx document without having Word 2007 installed? The vast majority of my clients are using Office 2000 and 2003 but I can install compatability packs on their machines so they can open the Docx file. Will they be able to edit the Docx file in Word 2000/2003? Cheers, Rob More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I'm using visual studio 2008 to do my school work. I have a question about the "Project->linker" property. In my program, I include some libs "wsock32.lib" "opengl32.lib" "fltkd.lib" "fltkgld.lib" "comctl32.lib" by adding them in the "Project->Linker->input->Additional Dependencies" row. When I debug, release and run the program in my computer, everything goes well. But when I copy the .exe file to another computer, the program can not execute. Do I have to put those *.lib files along with my .exe so that the exeutable file can run on other computers?:s More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=10176607 Message from the Commander in Chief Dear compatriots: Last Friday, February 15, I promised you that in my next reflectionI would deal with an issue of interest to many compatriots. Thus, thisnow is rather a message. The moment has come to nominate and elect the State Council, its President, its Vice-Presidents and Secretary. For many years I have occupied the honorable position of President. On February 15, 1976 the Socialist Constitution was approved with thefree, direct and secret vote of over 95% of the people with the rightto cast a vote. The first National Assembly was established on December 2nd thatsame year; this elected the State Council and its presidency. Beforethat, I had been a Prime Minister for almost 18 years. I always had thenecessary prerogatives to carry forward the revolutionary work with thesupport of the overwhelming majority of the people. There were those overseas who, aware of my critical healthcondition, thought that my provisional resignation, on July 31, 2006,to the position of President of the State Council, which I left toFirst Vice-President Raul Castro Ruz, was final. But Raul, who is also minister of the Armed Forces on account of hisown personal merits, and the other comrades of the Party and Stateleadership were unwilling to consider me out of public life despite myunstable health condition. It was an uncomfortable situation for me vis--vis an adversary whichhad done everything possible to get rid of me, and I felt reluctant tocomply. Later, in my necessary retreat, I was able to recover the fullcommand of my mind as well as the possibility for much reading andmeditation. I had enough physical strength to write for many hours, which I shared with the corresponding rehabilitation and recoveryprograms. Basic common sense indicated that such activity was within my reach. On the other hand, when referring to my health I was extremely carefulto avoid raising expectations since I felt that an adverse ending wouldbring traumatic news to our people in the midst of the battle. Thus, my first duty was to prepare our people both politically andpsychologically for my absence after so many years of struggle. I keptsaying that my recovery "was not without risks." My wishes have always been to discharge my duties to my last breath. That's all I can offer. To my dearest compatriots, who have recently honored me so much byelecting me a member of the Parliament where so many agreements shouldbe adopted of utmost importance to the destiny of our Revolution, I amsaying that I will neither aspire to nor accept, I repeat, I willneither aspire to nor accept the positions of President of the StateCouncil and Commander in Chief. In short letters addressed to Randy Alonso, Director of the RoundTable National TV Program, --letters which at my request were madepublic -- I discreetly introduced elements of this message I am writingtoday, when not even the addressee of such letters was aware of myintention. ... Following are some paragraphs chosen from the letter addressed to Randy on December 17, 2007: ... "My elemental duty is not to cling to positions, much less tostand in the way of younger persons, but rather to contribute my ownexperience and ideas whose modest value comes from the exceptional erathat I had the privilege of living in. .... Letter from January 8, 2008: "I am a firm supporter of the united vote (a principle thatpreserves the unknown merits), which allowed us to avoid the tendencyto copy what came to us from countries of the former socialist bloc, including the portrait of the one candidate, as singular as hissolidarity towards Cuba. I deeply respect that first attempt atbuilding socialism, thanks to which we were able to continue along thepath we had chosen." And I reiterated in that letter that "I never forget that 'all of the world's glory fits in a kernel of corn." Therefore, it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept aresponsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I amphysically able to offer. This I say devoid of all drama. Fortunately, our Revolution can still count on cadres from the oldguard and others who were very young in the early stages of theprocess. Some were very young, almost children, when they joined thefight on the mountains and later they have given glory to the countrywith their heroic performance and their internationalist missions. Theyhave the authority and the experience to guarantee the replacement. There is also the intermediate generation which learned togetherwith us the basics of the complex and almost unattainable art oforganizing and leading a revolution. The path will always be difficult and require from everyone'sintelligent effort ... The adversary to be defeated is extremelystrong; however, we have been able to keep it at bay for half a century. This is not my farewell to you. My only wish is to fight as asoldier in the battle of ideas. I shall continue to write under theheading of 'Reflections by comrade Fidel.' It will be just anotherweapon you can count on. Perhaps my voice will be heard. I shall becareful. Thanks. Fidel Castro Ruz February 18, 2008, 5:30 p.m. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Just reading the roadmap from DevExpress http://www.devexpress.com/Home/Announces/Roadmap2008.xml it is pretty clear that that sales for Windows Forms are still very high. This has meant that investment in the Windows Forms*platform is to continue. The principal problem with WPF for LOB applications, is that you need to pay for a designer, and they do no come cheap. In a six month turnaround application that can easily be £60,000 or much much more.*With most LOB applications, you purchase presentation layer components from Infragistics, DevExpress, Component One etc, and your developers thrash out*the necessary business logic with the Office 2007 UI or whatever UI is flavour-of-the-month. Because Microsoft have just created the fluent interface in the Office 2007 ribbon, I cannot see a significant change to this UI in the next office version. Office is still written in C/C++ and I don't see a re-write for the next office version.*As a result most applications written in windows forms today*will continue to be relevant. Look at Visual Studio, the toolbar components are pretty much the same as Office 2003, even down to the icons that have not been changed for years. Visual Studio is a tool, and most LOB applications are tools. Differentiated UI is a big risk in LOB applications, because you usually have a workforce with varying IT skills. You can safely assume that most users are familiar with Outlook, so creating an application with a similar look and feel lessens the learning curve.*WPF opens up new doors, and for me in LOB applications, only the subtle use of it with nice 3D charting or reports is the way to go. If you move too far away from the familiar, you will end up with users struggling to learn*the application. The net resultant is increased training costs for the application, for no real business value. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
