  2. ...and most likely impossible, impractical or just plain wrong.. but I thought i post what i was thinking about to help make things less "allow?" and more just.. allow. >>>>>>>>> I'm the first to admit I really do not have a clue how security works in Windows. Currently, it seems to be that it asks you each and every time - by dialogue - to Allow or not - confusing some users into just saying yes all the time. It also has the black screen fade - which can be jarring - or sluggish on more than one monitor or both. The Windows I remember liking the most (security/network wise) was Windows98se.* Yes it blue screened... but in general it seemed to be set up for users (everything turned on by default).* Then came the internet, viruses, trojans, worms.. so the security increased in Windows (as it should) but it seems every security measure - made it harder for uses to get stuff to run as they had in the past.* Examples like the removal of web within windows explorer, the yellow bars, the fullscreen mandatory toolbars (status / zone / close / address)... There were reasons that all of these were good (for security) but in each case it made Windows either harder to use or not as fun. So pretend for a moment - we are back at Win98se - and have to come up with a secure solution for Windows, but that preserves the ease of use and fun that 98 allowed. Again - im not sure how this works - but I've made a premise that there are 2 areas in windows: an install shell and a saferoom So below - (rough) everything behind security wall 2 is wide open / trusted / no logging in / no pop-ups to agree or allow / no notifications. http://www.channel9.ca/security/1.jpg So for example lets turn on computer - the login comes up (mandatory) sort of like now...* you log in... http://www.channel9.ca/security/2.jpg then - instead of it loading your desktop - it shows it to you within the Install Shell.*(sort of like youtube - grayed out - with play button)*This is sort of like if taskmanager and control panel combined to create a layer in front of the user experience/desktop (saferoom) If you click "Click to open".... http://www.channel9.ca/security/3.jpg ...it would open your desktop (normal like now) but in this mode there are NO pop-ups, notifications, allow, black screens, admin privilege etc.. as you've been through that area already. this is the FUN no bullcrap area of Windows http://www.channel9.ca/security/4.jpg So your working away and download a plugin let's say - or go to install and EXE...* at that point - instead of black screen / allow bla bla it just "zooms out" to here again: http://www.channel9.ca/security/3.jpg *.."showing" the user what is going on (in an environment set up to make it clear they are loading / unloading etc. After the app or plug in loads - it would say Complete.* and youd click to go back into the Saferoom (desktop) If this was set up on all the machines you have - then it would be easy for the windows network to just look for other "saferooms" - and then connect to them no holds barred* /* no per machine configuring across network as it is done already: http://www.channel9.ca/security/5.jpg So at the end of the day - while not perfect, to me it would: - create a new top level environment for security / installing / network / users * This means you dont go into windows - then look around for it in CP * It is right there - in your face - the install shell - Once saferoom is entered - it can connect to other saferooms (shares/printers etc) without interruptions and prompts >>> so does anything above make any sense at all?* There must be room for improving the usability of security - without sacrificing it ? edit: ..yes its sort of Facebook-ish.. ;) More... 3. Hi guys, I just cannot get AJAX Update panel to perform as I expect. I am in VS2008, a new ASP.NET website, add a ScriptManager add an UpdatePanel Inside Update Panel, add a button In the buttons OnClick() event, add the following Button1.Text = DateTime.Now.ToString(); Problem: Every time I press the button, I get a full postback!!! I have tried lots of examples from the web and get full postbacks on all of them.* I am using the built in webserver with VS2008 Update:* Just noticed also, that for a micro second I get the "Done but with Errors on Page" flash in the status bar.* I can also run demo AJAX pages from websites without fault. Can anyone point me in a direction to investigate ?* Full code to webform below. 6. Has anyone else noticed problems with sleep after installing VPC? Sleep used to work perfectly, having checked the logs the computer stopped sleeping the day I installed VPC. If I hit sleep the monitor shuts off but the computer doesn't, 5-10mins later if I hit a key the logon screen comes up, but I can't hit a key immeadiately after sleeping, that has no effect. I miss sleep :( More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  7. According to Reuters, Toshiba is getting ready to write off hundreds of millions of dollars to exit the HD-DVD business. As supporters fell by the wayside in quick succession, even the 'we will fight on' press statements from Tosh, were sounding less and less hopeful. Does make you think though. Sony builds a Blu-Ray drive inside the PS3 - that was pretty damn confident. Microsoft edges their bets and keeps the HD-DVD drive outside the XBox360 - that was pretty damn sensible. Any guesses as to when MS wil announce the Blu-Ray drive for the XBox that is no doubt waiting behind the curtain? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  8. I need to store x, y, z for each user. Here's the catch : each user will have multiple x, y, z variables. What would be the recommened DB Structure for storing this? I was thinking about taking the lazy way out and doing a single cell and having the data as "x,y,z/x,y,z/" then splitting it to show it to the user. I soon found out that this would be a stupid method because it would be hard to update the variables. Now I am thinking of doing this: Username** ID** X** Y** Z dylan** ** ** * 1*** a** b** c dylan** ** ** * 2*** b** a** c The second method seems much more logical to me since I can easily retrieve the data and easily update it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  9. I have downloaded an installed the MSN Remote Recording Service onto my Vista Ultimate PC.* (In fact, I've done this on 2 PC's, both running Vista Ultimate, to test this out.)* Then I started the process of trying and to get it to work, so I can download a TV program over the Internet and watch it later. However, here is where the problem starts.* According to the instructions when I downloaded MSN Remote Recording Service, I have to configure the TV tuner and that requires test it.* For a Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate PC the instructions to configure the TV tuner are as follows (straight off of Microsoft's website): On the Start menu, click Tasks Click Settings Click TV Click Set Up TV Signal I get stopped on step #1.* There is NO "Tasks" on any of my Vista Ultimate machines under the Start menu! * How in heck am I supposed to set anything up if the instructions are wrong???????* I can not read minds, I do not know where the Settings | TV | Set Up TV Signal dialog is supposed to be under this missing "Tasks" option under the Start menu.*I would appreciate knowing what it is these instructions are supposed to mean/say, so that I can actually setup and configure MSN Remote Recording Service and TV Tuner. 11. From a conversation with Sven: http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif Messenger Conversation wrote:[David] hey [sven]* hi [David] I think I've stumbled upon an idea, can I gauge your opinion? [sven]* sure [David] a "Contact Me" service. Say you want someone to email you, but you don't want them having your email address. So you register with this service which records your email address, it then gives you a unique URL you can pass to the other person so they can send you the message via a contact form that URL points to [sven]* The only problem I see is that those people probably don't want to give their address to your site either.* [David] not necessarily [David] say you want people to contact you, but you don't want to put your email address up for fear of spambots [sven]* What's to prevent spambots (or human spammers) from using your form? [David] a math captcha [David] well, for human spammers you would set a "message limit" [David] so each URL can only be used x number of times [David] and of course a maximum of n messages per hour [sven]* In theory it sounds nice, but I have no idea whether people would use that. [David] I could also put out a javascript which auto-inserts a Contact Me form on someone's website [David] so people who want "contact me" on their homepages, but don't know PHP or whatever could get it [sven]* If you do, please make it compatible with XHTML. :) [David] naturally I could easily build a service like this in a couple of days, complete with authentic web 2.0-ish look. But would you use it? What would make you use it? Oh, and the following are a-given: Monetarily free One text-mode Google ad banner somewhere Email address database totally separate complete with enforced expiriry Transparency with internal affairs More...
