vista os x and win7 upgrade
Tootech replied to origami-sheep's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Taken from the Vista OSX site..... -
DHCP is the way a router assigns an IP address to your computer, so not having an IP and not be able to contact DHCP server make sense. Who has responsibility for the router setup? It may be that the router DHCP is switched off and IP addresses are set manually for some reason. What model router is it?

I have seen hard disks fail a diagnostic check, not because they were faulty, but because the memory was faulty. Also, install issues on a new drive are often memory related. So do a memory check before going any further. Download, burn the ISO and boot from Memetest. http://www.memtest.org/download/4.00/memtest86+-4.00.iso.zip - thats a direct link. Let it run through its tests. Bad parts of memory will flag up in red, and it would need replacing. Also, what install CD are you using - is it the Dell original, or another CD?

Hi, I'm not a gamer so I can't offer any guide as to what games will run at what res on what system, but I can tell you that your board will take up to a 4000+ CPU, which isn't much faster than you have, and also it is a Socket 939 board which is getting on now. Being Windows XP it should be reasonably speedy, and you could add a video card say like a GT200 to give you some more video grunt. Is it worth it? Don't spend too much on it, is what I think. Post your gaming wishes and someone should be able to help you further.

You are!! :) Virgin do both. Where I live, I have cable, DN32 area, also in the DN38 area they have cable. Two major towns. All of the other towns and villages locallly don't have cable and they can use Virgin ADSL as part of the phone package. Broadband wherever you live - Broadband - Virgin Media Perhaps I assumed too much, guess we will find out soon.

Just been reading through this lot...... Your new computer...did it replace an older one that utilised the same broadband connection? If so, how was the Internet with the old PC? Also, your speed is too low, way down on an acceptable service. Is it slow 24/7 or is at peak times? What is model of your router? You will no doubt be using ADSL max, not the old fixed rate ADSL, your router could well be an issue. I've seen it on the new BT 20MB connection, a standard ADSL router is awful, add a BT hub or business hub and it flies. It is worth considering other problems too - check your telephone number on the ADSL checker for a guide to what speed you should expect. There's no point asking Virgin to upgrade if you can't actually get more than 1MB/s say. BT Broadband ADSL Checker

Just to make sure we understand what equipment you have...... The adapters you have are they USB? When you installed them did you use the install CD that came with them? Can you post the make/model of the adapters (useful to know as some come with connection software). Have a look up the start menu, look for any software relating to the wireless adapters and uninstall it. Reboot and plug your preferred adapter in, wait for Windows to find it and see if you can find any networks. If not, go to Device Manager and see of there is a yellow question mark or cross over any devices. Look in the Network Adapter section - can you see your wireless adapter listed?

XP to Windows 7 using Viao Upgrade CD
Tootech replied to dazzac1965's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Yes. ATI don't list Windows 7 drivers for that chipset, but I have read that the Vista drivers work. Thats 32 bit btw - really don't know about 64 bit. Can't advise you any more than that, if it was mine, I'd have a go at it. -
Hmmmm - I followed JB's link and found the connection to network page. There's no mention of wireless - just a normal ethernet cable connection. Here's the link Televisions and ProjectorsÂ*|Â* KDL-46W5810Â*|Â*Sony Support Europe Do you have any more info about the wireless capabilities of your TV Bob?

Thats it then - either your PSU is dead or your board is dead, or worst case, PSU died and took the board with it. Only way to tell is have your PSU tested or swap it for another. BTW - is your "300w EPOWER psu" up to power all the gear you said you added. I would say not. To be on the safe side, 450 or 500W. There is a big surge of required current when a PC fires up, adding more gear, fans, drives and/or video card could have pushed your PSU too far.
-
Back to basics I'm afraid..... Disconnect your DVD drive(s), hard drive, extra fans, video card (if you have onboard also), and wireless card. Check your connections to the motherboard carefully- especially the front panel wiring. Disconnect the mainboard conenctors, re connect them. Take out the memory and refit. Will it fire up now? If not reset the BIOS by removing the battery for 30 seconds and refitting - make sure the mains is off at the plug. Will the board fire up now?

Banning a user from my BTHomeHub2
Tootech replied to AlarifHashem's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
You should be able to either: only allow certain computers, or dissallow certain computer using their MAC address as identification. Yip, just checked - there is something called access control whereby you can set times that a PC can or can't access the net. -
Its a 40GB drive - take the 37.25 disk manager reports multiply by 1024 three times and you have the full 40GB. The FAT and FAT32 partitions are boot and recovery partitions respectively. Being nearly full I'd check the user accounts My Documents folders - most likely place to find big files and either back them up on flash drive/external hard drive or delete them.

Hi bob, Your board isn't a standard MSI board, it looks like it is based on an MSI i945P Neo board, which do have support for all the new CPU's. BUT.......it is an OEM board, built for Medion - it is different and it looks like it may have a different BIOS. General consensus is that an upgrade won't work. Next bit of bad news, it is a uBTX format board - thats a format that came along, was used for a while by Dell, Medion etc and seems to have gone away again. A standard uATX motherboard will not fit. You would need a new case. I'd leave it all alone.
-
I have a GT220, it doesn't have any extra power connectors, and it runs on a bog standard 400W PSU. Does yours have any additional power connectors on the back edge - if it has, and they are not connected it may not fire up.
-
Take you card out, run on the onboard video for now. Then uninstall all video drivers - both your 6100 and GT220 drivers if installed. Reboot, then go straight into the BIOS. Set the initial display device to PCI-E and if there is an option to, disable the onboard video. Shutdown the PC. Install the GT220, plug the monitor in to it, reboot - do you see the POST screen - ie the BIOS screen? If so, it will boot and then you can install your display drivers for the new card.

Move over to Win 7 and you won't regret it - it's like a breath of fresh air. I know what you mean about XP, it's pretty stable now and works well on mid range/older hardware. I have to say I was one of those that tried Vista - paid good money for it and got rid of it within 3 months of installing it, and went back to XP. Once you have run 7 for while, there really is no going back. I still pine for XP now and then lol, but I think another 2 years or so and it will feel like Win 98 did 5 years ago.......old :)

What is the part number of the memory - there are a few on th their website, some @ 1.5Volts, some @ 1.65 Volts.

networking virgin cable to a DSL router
Tootech replied to nils_coram's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Forget the BT ADSL router, it won't work correctly. Leave the cable modem attached, connect it to this router using the ethernet cable. Use the CD wizard to set it up and you are done :) Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Cable G54 Mbps Wireless Router - Buy cheap Netgear DSL wireless routers at PC World -
NAS Drive Remote Connection
Tootech replied to bucko1986's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I've come across a similar problem with a NAS box. If I remember correctly I had to login to the NAS locally, and change the user permissions so everyone could access the share. Sorry I can't be of any more help - it's over a year ago that I did it. -
Which version of Logmein are you using? My version allows me to log in remotely, it times out but I can log back in and carry on from where I was. I don't need anyone at the other end. If it times out and you attempt a reconnect, Logmein will take you back to the remote computer login screen, then you can log on again. Sometimes you will get thrown off when your work computer goes in to standby - PseFrank's info should sort that for you.

Hi jinkie I don't know what the problem is - I have done excactly what I described to you and I'm writing this from Ubuntu running on USB stick. Can you go through how you have got this far please. You should have: 1) downloaded your ISO image of Ubuntu ( I think you sorted that ok) 2) downloaded the program I linked to. 3) made sure your USB disk was formatted/clean and ready use 4) run the linux to USB installer, selected the Ubuntu file you downloaded. 5) selected the USN stick to install it to and let it get on - may take 20 mins or so. 6) booted your web book from USB stick to run Ubuntu. 7) then double clicked the installer on the Desktop to install it your hard drive. Let us know if thats how you did it please.

Two Laptops - which one is better?
Tootech replied to sxc656's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Don't know about the gaming side apart from the fact that for £400 you won't get much of gaming video card. For older games there shouldn't be a problem. The Acer is a nice machine - I set two of them up recently and they seem good value for money. I'm a bit wary of HP laptops as some of them have had some serious quality issues over the last 3 years or so - they may be ok, but I'd go with the Acer :) -
Wouldn't Disk Manager show the full picture of the disk without taking up more space?
-
You shouldn't use the computer - you should take the drive out, connect it to another computer as a slave drive or with a USB connector and recover from there. If you continue to use it the areas that are storing your data, even though you can't see it will be overwritten gradually. End of the story.... Try Getbackdata - its free to try. I've used it successfully on reformatted drives. Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products
