  1. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Did it recognise and play any DVD before you did the factory restore? Do you have a drivers disk? it should have come with the machine, or if recovery disks were made when new, and should have been used during the restore process. Have a look in device manager and see if there are any red or yellow marks by the CD/DVD drives. to get to device manager click "start", then "Run" type or copy and paste into the box devmgmt.msc click ok or hit enter. Scroll down to the DVD/CD drives and click any + next to the entry to expand to all devices of that type. Let us know what you find. Nev.
  2. Hi, follow Totechs advice and have a look here for a description of the battery and what it looks like- Replacing the Motherboard Battery | Hardware Secrets
  3. Hi Chris, if all you want is the data off the drive, you could try removing the drive and connecting it to another computer as an external drive using an adapter cable. This will convert the SATA to USB. Hopefully you should be able to get the data that way. Alternatively to a cable, a full caddy that you can fit the drive into, and make it a permanent external drive, can also be done if not bothered about the rest of the old computer.. Let us know if you wish to try either, and I or one of our other members can provide links to sites where adapters or caddies are available. Nev.
  4. Hi, I had a look round and found this site offering a few good looking free programs, including the Virtual dub you already have, have a look here and scroll down the list. Free Video Capture and Recording Software (thefreecountry.com) You are obviously a bit further into video than myself, being nothing more than a home video maker in a small way. However, I like some of the freeware that is available, and if it doesn't work, just uninstall it and try something else. After all it costs nothing except a bit of time. Nev.
  5. I will add that Epson are now well known for rejecting alternative so called compatible cartridges, they obviously want you to buy only their own cartridges at their prices, not cheaper from someone else. Nev.
  6. Thanks for the update. That is another thing to think about when faced with a similar problem, so thanks for letting us know. I dare say it is one of those things that If I had been sat in front of your computer, I may have found it right away as your friend did. However when in a remote situation as this is, it can so easily be missed. Thanks once gain, Nev.
  7. For now I would try the WinDV program. If any problem, The Panasonic program you have, does that also have the ability to capture from DV? I have one of the Panasonic programs but it came with my SD card camcorder, so doesn't appear to have the ability to capture from DV, only from the SD cards. However there are many programs available for free that may do the job. I assume it has to capture from a DV input via the IEEE1394 cable and input card? If you want, I will have a search, but I cannot guarantee that any free programs I find will work as you want them too. Nev.
  8. Hi Geoff, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I have moved your post to a new thread, asking for help at the end of an old thread may not be seen, so it is always best to start a new thread, you can always link to an old thread if there is something of relevance in it. Now to your problem, If I understand this, the speech is at high speed at first, but then slows down? This may be due to an incorrect installation of the new webcam. Did it come with any software on a disk? if so, uninstall the software and remove the webcam. Then re install the software first, then plug in the webcam afterwards. Quite often the software may prompt you to plug the camera in. See if that helps. Nev.
  9. Hi and welcome to free PC help. This may be an overheating issue. Is the computer a desk top or laptop, and can you tell us what make and model it is please. next is do the fans come on and are they all running? if this is a desktop machine, turn off the power and remove the cover, have a look at the fan or fans, is there any dust or fluff in the fins of the heatsink? If there is any dust or fluff try cleaning it out with a can of compressed air (obtainable from most computer outlets). Do not use a vacuum cleaner, it can cause static damage, or worse, suck something vital off the mother board. Nev.
  10. I like it, and this time you can have the burnt end of the hot dog Randy:D
  11. Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. At what point does the screen fill with zero's, is it the first thing that comes on screen or at some point after? Do you hear any beeps and if so what order are the beeps in? Are you sure you have fitted the right type of new memory, and have you tried with the old memory removed and just the new one in? Nev.
  12. Hi, for my two pence worth, the odd mails I wish to keep, I get them out of the mail system altogether by doing a copy and paste into a word doc, I now have loads of pages of word docs, but saved to the external drive. I feel that is much safer for the important stuff. Nev.
  13. I wouldn't trust that drive as it has been in a Sky box already and may have been removed because it is damaged. The problem you have which is due to the power disconnection, may well have done damage to the motherboard as well, but first start with a good and new drive, the fact that it did at least give you a message that the drive is corrupt, looks promising and the BIOS is at least OK. so it may be worth a new hard drive, after all they aren't that expensive and once installed, as Maynard said, the Windows disk should then do all that is needed. Nev.
  14. Hi Chris, can you go inside the case, and check all connections to the drive, remove and replace each to make sure connections are OK. If no good, can you go back into set up and tell us everything in the message on screen, it may give us a clue. Also can you navigate round set up and find out what order the boot sequence is set to, is the SATA drive first or one of the CD/DVD drives or even a floppy drive first? Nev.
  15. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. The best place to ask will be the hard drives section of the hardware forum, post your question there with as much relevant information as possible, and I am sure we will be able to offer some advice there, thanks. Nev.
  16. OK, any thing else you want to know just ask. If you have Windows Movie Maker installed, you will find that once connected to the computer and Movie Maker has been pointed in the right direction, you can control the camera from the computer for playback and upload to the computer. Nev.
  17. Hi, I assume the video camera is equipped with a IEEE1394 (firewire) connector? if so you will need the same on your computer and not anything connected to your sound system. A PCI IEEE1394 card is the best option if there is not a connection on the computer already. They are not too expensive and easily fitted providing there is a free PCI slot on your mother board. Have a look here- Belkin FireWire 3-Port PCI Card FireWire adapter: Read product information and write a Belkin FireWire 3-Port PCI Card FireWire adapter review There is a three port one for just over £11-00 and I fitted one about a year ago for exactly the same purpose. Nev.
  18. Although everything is correct that Tootech has supplied regarding the computer itself, actual DVD or CD recordings taken from legitimate sites such as Youtube can be tricky. A lot depends then on what use that recording is put to, also the legal aspect of the material recorded. Although Youtube and other sites may well be legitimate, and the owners do their best to respect the law regarding copyright, they cannot properly control the full legitimacy of all the material on offer. So, the big question, what do you intend doing with that recording? If it is for personal use and can be shown that you downloaded it in good faith, there is very likely no problem except that the recording may be confiscated if it was proved the original was illegal. However, if you download any material, then make multiple recordings for sale, or even to just give away, then you will certainly be in some form of trouble for breach of copyright laws. As far as traceability of those recordings, more than likely the old fashioned methods will be used, such as, "where did you get this from?" Oh I bought it off him on the market! Sooner or later, there will be the heavy handed knock on your door. It is then that your computer will be taken for scrutiny as Tootech states. I hope that clarifies things a little. The copyright laws in general though are a minefield, so much so, that quite often each case is dealt with individually by the relevant authorities. The next thing is the quite definitely illegal material such as child pornography, stuff that can be shown to be terrorist related, or other material that can be shown to be in direct conflict with the law. You only need to see the news reports to realise that the minute any such recording becomes known about, the law will hit like the ton of bricks. Nev.
  19. Hi Kenny, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I am not sure about what you mean about trying an old CD player? was this a computer type similar to what you already have or do you mean something else? However it sounds a lot like a filter issue, or a bad stroke of luck and both drives have broken at once:mad: I hope not the latter, have a look in device manager first. To get there, click "Start"( Bottom left of screen) then click "Run" type in or copy and paste- devmgmt.msc then click OK or the enter key, look down the list for DVD/CD-ROM Drives, click the little + in the box, are there any yellow or red exclamation marks or question marks, and by which entry? Nev.
  20. Hi Kev, good to see you back, Windows 7 being still so new there seems to be quite a few odd issues with the upgrade, so you aren't on your own. However I can only suggest looking in, or doing a search of, the windows old. files. look for any reference to Windows Live, but also any mail titles, as it may have saved just the mail with each of the mails title only. Not yet got familiar with W7 myself, and still running XP, so hopefully someone else may know of other file titles to look for. Nev.
  21. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Do you wish to start again on our malware removal section, as Match suggested, (thanks Match) or do you wish me or other moderator to move this post over there for you? You will get the help you need there as it does need a malware (virus) expert to sort that problem. Please let us know which way you wish to go, and all the best to you. Nev.
  22. Yesterday, I was presented with an update for Apples Quick time, OK I don't use it much except for MIDI file downloads, but took on board the update as there is a security issue resolved within it. I also was presented with the option to download and install their browser Safari, so having heard a little about it decided to give it a try. Initial feelings are that it is quite different in operation from Firefox or Internet Exploder, sorry Explorer, so what are the views of others that may have experimented with and tried Safari? Do you like it or hate it? Nev.
  23. Hi, thanks for the update and glad it was that easy. Nev.
  24. Thanks for the update, I know perhaps it wasn't the answer you expected, but in cases where a machine is either brand new, or as in this case straight from repair, any other suggestions for a fix to the problem could invalidate any warranty on the machine, and we don't want you finding that out if it should go wrong again. So we always recommend taking it back in order that the warranty is maintained. That way it doesn't cost you any more than a little time. Far better than perhaps having to buy expensive new drives or other hardware/software, which could be the outcome on an older machine out of its warranty period. Nev.
  25. Hi, Windows can only do that if cyrillic scripts are in the fonts list. If not there on your computer, you may have to find a source to install it to your list. Nev.
