It is that you downloaded it, we have no proof this is a legal copy. As far as I know Microsoft Office in any of its versions is only available as a disk in its legal form. For this reason and the possible breach of forum rules number 4 References, questions, signatures or subjects posted with regard to or containing software cracks, rips, hacks, warez, porn, non-genuine, pirated and illegal software etc, may be removed, the thread closed and the originating poster possibly being banned. attatching photo's to e-mail
Plastic Nev replied to Trace's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Again, an other idea perhaps and given to me by a fellow moderator and administrator, would be to put your photo's on a file sharing site. Two or three come to mind, there is the well known Photobucket, dedicated to photos and image files here- Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket And two general purpose file hosting and sharing sites, in both cases files can be protected by password so it is just a matter of passing the password to your mum. Both sites here- 2shared - About Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire Hope that may be of help. Nev. -
attatching photo's to e-mail
Plastic Nev replied to Trace's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Trace, I am afraid photo's in JPG format will not compress much smaller without losing too much quality, you could try using windows own zipping facility but I doubt the total file will be much smaller, sorry about that, but to keep the quality of each photo you will be better going the long way round I am afraid. If I read this correctly, you are trying to get the machine into hibernate or standby but with it still connected to the net. Try disconnecting, it may be the odd server requests reactivating things. Nev. -

Hi Trace and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, we all had to start at the beginning, and you aren't doing too bad if you found your way round in sorting partitions. -
Well you caught me out there then Bob, I was convinced it was a reflection :D

Hi again, I have two questions now as it seems you have something really nasty in there that cannot be removed by our conventional means. First is, have you fully backed up all your data, preferably before you got hit with this malware? The disks you have should be able to reinstall windows from a full reformat of your system if you do have that backup, as a reformat will and should wipe the entire system of everything including the malware. Let us know and we can direct you in the reformat and reinstallation of your operating system. Secondly, If you do not have a back up and therefore wish to not do a full reformat, there is only one way open left. It may take some time though as you will be asked to perform perhaps many different tasks, and show the logs from them. This is one of the very rare times we ask you to go to a specialist malware removal forum here- MalWare Removal • Index page you will have to register as a normal procedure, but then follow all instructions given. I hope that you can recover your system from there. Nev.

Hi Jinkie, First off you need the service tag for your machine, you should find this as a label on the back or underneath the machine. Then go to the Dell site here- Dell - Drivers and Downloads Enter the service tag, you should get a specific list of all drivers for your machine, find the one for your graphics. Let us know how you get on please. Nev.

Hi Quaytec. Please follow this exactly, First you will need access to a clean and unaffected computer, and a memory stick or pen drive. Next totally uninstall or delete all traces of existing Malwarebytes on the affected computer. Then use the clean computer to download the malwarebytes file. Once downloaded, change its name, then copy or transfer the renamed file to the pen drive. Once you have done that, insert the pen drive in the affected computer and transfer the file to a folder of your choice. With luck it will then open and install from that file. Let us know if that works, then you can do the same with the SAS file. If still no good, again let us know, we will take it from there. I doubt that system restore is going to work at all until we can get shut of whatever infection you have. Nev.

Hi quaytec, did you manage to get Malwarebytes to install and run? If you still cannot get Malwarebytes to run, we need to know to be able to go further.

PC CONSTANTLY RESTARTING!!
Plastic Nev replied to Haymaker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi again, it looks like you were posting while I was writing as well. If indeed it isn't long since you cleaned things out, when you do look in this time, remember to turn it off from the power, then check all the plugs and cable connections inside. Make sure they are properly connected, unplug, then re fit each one in turn, (do one at a time then nothing gets mixed up) to make sure there are no poor or bad connections. Let us know how it behaves after that. -
PC CONSTANTLY RESTARTING!!
Plastic Nev replied to Haymaker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK the temperatures do look OK at the moment, but has it been cleaned out recently any way? I really do think you should at least look! Also have you recently installed anything? New program perhaps, or new video card or sound card? Nev. -
PC CONSTANTLY RESTARTING!!
Plastic Nev replied to Haymaker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK, Haymaker, lets start with the simple stuff first. It may be overheating due to dust and fluff inside, especially if your computer is more than a couple of years old. First, is this a desktop computer or a laptop? If it is a laptop I recommend taking it for repair to a reputable repair shop, laptops are far to fiddly for anyone except a technician. However if it is a desktop computer, you will need to remove the cover and check for dust and fluff. The best and safest way to remove it is by using a soft one inch paint brush to loosen the dust, fluff, or general dirt, then blow it out with a can of compressed air (You can get these from most computer shops) Let us know how you get on and if there is any problem with doing that. Just to add, and hopefully reduce confusion, first do as Wolfey said, create some folders within My Pictures and name them, then search for the misplaced photo's, once found, click on the file, in the box on the left titled "File and folder tasks" you should see "Move this file" click that, you will then get a drop down list, find "My Pictures" in that list, click the expansion button and find the appropriate folder, click on that one, then click the " move" button. That should do it. If you do get the message "File 00001 (or other name) already exists, replace this file?" click cancel, then go back to the misplaced file and change the name to something else first. Nev.

Epson Stylus Photo R300 no power
Plastic Nev replied to bob12a's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Bob mate, it looks like the internal power supply has gone, for the price of a repair against the price of a new printer it isn't worth bothering, so recommend you buy a new one mate. Stick to Epson or perhaps a Canon or HP. Nev. -
Hi, sorry for the delay in answering as I have been busy elsewhere. The graphics card I am not too sure about whether it will physically fit without actually seeing the two together, but if the card will fit it should work. As far as the extra RAM is concerned, the best thing to do is visit the Crucial website and let it scan the machine, it will tell you what amount of RAM can be fitted, the make, and type. have a look at- RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com The scan and test of your system will only work directly if you are using Internet Explorer, other browsers will not, and will mean downloading the scanning program. keyboard problem on laptop
Plastic Nev replied to roberto3's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Roberto. If you can get a can of compressed air, then direct a jet of air directly under the affected keys, this may loosen or blow away any dust that may be the cause of the problem. The cans of compressed air can be bought at most computer dealers and especially computer parts dealers. If that doesn't help I am afraid it may mean either a new keyboard or at least fully dismantling to repair. Laptops being so difficult to get into, it is best to get an expert to do that. Nev. -
OK I will try explaining a little more, and as simply as I can. Avast and AVG are anti virus software. All antivirus software runs continuously, that is what they are made to do in order to provide continuous protection. If more than one antivirus software is running at the same time they will cause conflicts and basically wage a little war between themselves. The reason is because of the way they work, one sees the other as a potential virus so tries to stop it working, the same goes the other way round. The result is the two antivirus programs can't catch any virus because one is trying to turn the other off, back and forth all the time, and therefore isn't on long enough to do anything useful. Also using your computers resources and slowing it down as well. However antimalware software like SAS and Malwarebytes work in an entirely different way from antivirus programs for a start. Secondly they are not actually on all the time as antivirus programs are. Antimalware programs only actually do any work when you tell them to do a scan and look for malware. Providing you don't try to have two of them scanning at once, then there can not be any conflicts between them, and because they work differently they won't conflict with an antivirus program either. Then there are blocking programs like SpywareBlaster, they are programs set up to continuously compare all incoming data and traffic with a vast library of malware file signatures, they will block any file that has a signature similar or exactly the same as one in the library. This is again a different type of program and therefore doesn't conflict with anything else. Please do not try and use two antivirus programs at once and do take notice of what we say, we are here to help you, and many other people as well. Some of us with many qualifications and long experience with computers both in industry and with home computers. We don't spout rubbish, what we say comes from a tremendous amount of real knowledge. I hope we can help you and that you will both understand, learn a little, and find that we do in the end help you sort your problems. Nev.

PC automatically comes out of standly.
Plastic Nev replied to JB3's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Please take note of my post on the thread that link goes to. Even when shut down, there is still power being used by the power supply, also the monitor, printer (if you have one) etc. I was being presented with power bills in the hundreds till I started shutting down and then fully powering everything off. Now I get a reasonable bill down in the fifties and sixties, for such things as lighting and for the time when my computer is on and in use. I don't use that much electrical power otherwise than lighting, washing machine, fridge freezer, and a few other odds and things. My heating and cooking is all gas so I expect a high gas bill during the winter months with a little bit lighter during summer, but certainly not a high electricity bill. Nev. -
Hi Alli, I will try to explain. First, as has already been said peer to peer services and programs are now so well hacked by those intent on getting as much info off simple folk like yourself, that it is very near certain that by now your machine will be full of trojans worms and worse, probably very well hidden rootkits as well. With all of this, even though now you have removed all the P2P programs, I am afraid it is now probably too late. Secondly, you have been using Auslogics Bootspeed, was this in its registry cleaning mode? Sorry, but nearly all registry cleaners are a rip off at best, and using them usually does damage to your registry. In all honesty there is no need for any cleaning of the registry, odd bits left behind by removed programs or other things are ignored by Windows XP and above, and so do not slow your computer nor interfere with its normal running. Thirdly, you say you have both Avast and AVG running. Bad move there my friend, two antivirus programs conflict with each other, usually resulting in any protection provided being compromised by this conflict. My advise is dump AVG and stick with Avast, its better any way. Next issue being a firewall, do you have one? are you using Windows firewall? It is OK ish but there are better, see our recommendations from link below. Next and last, do you have any anti spyware or anti malware programs on? These are different to anti virus programs but in these trying times are now more essential than just an anti virus. Fortunately they can be installed side by side because they only run when you ask them to do a scan, and as long as they are only scanning one at a time, they will not conflict. Two we recommend amongst some others are Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware. I also suggest a real time blocking program such as Spywareblaster as well. For more info on which security programs we recommend have a look here-- http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html Nev.

Hi, First to go a bit further we would need to know how much RAM is there in your laptop now. We could then tell you the recommended amount of virtual memory you should have. To explain what virtual memory is,-- It is when Windows runs out of real memory or RAM to use, it then uses a portion of the hard drive to store what it needs while doing a task. When the warning pops up that virtual memory is running low, Windows shifts even more data around from RAM to hard drive and back to RAM to try to compensate while doing whatever you have asked it to do. Therefore taking up time to do it. This is why you find the biggest and best recommendation for increasing overall speed and performance is to "A" find out if there is room for more RAM, and secondly buy and fit more if there is. To find out if more memory or RAM can be fitted, how much extra you can install, and the price of it, have a look at - RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com If you need extra help, don't be afraid to ask. Nev.
