  1. Hi quaytecc, Please do not tell us what the key is, we just need to know where you got the key from, also what it says on the disk you have installed Vista with. Nev.
  2. OK the one in my music is the still uninstalled download, am I right? If so, you could try risking a double click to open it for installing from there! Or single click to highlight it, then over on the left, click move this file and select the "My downloads" folder or similar, then double click it to open it once it is there. When the installation wizard starts to run, at some point it will ask or tell you its destination, it should be "C:-program files" or similar. If not, there is usually the option to either browse or select where you want the program file in order to make sure it goes to the "C" drive program files destination. Nev.
  3. Yes, Do have a look at the link in Kens post, any problem in deciding what you need from there, let us know. Nev.
  4. Hi again Abilouise, Try a copy and paste of this into the run box -- devmgmt.msc Did you include the ".msc" last time? Nev.
  5. Hi Abilouise and welcome. First thing to try is a system restore back to a time previous to when you lent the machine out to your friend. If that can't be done or doesn't work, can you have a look in device management and look for sound video and game controllers. click on the expansion + to see the list, are there any yellow ! marks or red X next to anything? To get to device management click start, then run, and type in the box devmgmt and click OK. Nev.

  7. Ok just to add to Wolfey, I know you now have what is the same as a new toy and want to play with it :D I would be the same, however a bit of patience, just to avoid the unlikely chance of damage. It will be much better to get either the new hard drive, or at least reformat the existing one first, and start with a clean system. We can help with that if needed first, then we can go on with the installation of the new processor after that. Nev.
  8. Hi, Did you not get a separate drivers disk with the computer when new? You will probably need to install drivers for the sound, and maybe quite a few other things as well after reinstalling the OS only. Have a look here for the drivers you may need. Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Desktop, Acer Aspire M1640/M3640/M5640
  9. First I will agree with tootech, wherever a program is installed, if it is scheduled to run at start up it will slow things down. You will need to configure the program to not start until needed or even get rid if not needed. However to answer how to install to the different drive, you need to know which letter it is assigned. An example being, the main drive that has the operating system is normally assigned the letter "C", other drives such as CD or DVD drives will be given the letters "D" and "E" etc. When installing a program in most cases the installation wizard will at some point tell you it will be going to "C:- Program files" or similar. It is at this point that you change the drive letter to whatever letter the second drive has, say for example it is "F", so you would change the path to read "F:- program files" You may firstly have to create a program files folder in Drive "F" though. I will stand corrected if I have missed something or got it slightly wrong. Nev.
  10. Hi, it looks like things have got really messed up, the probably best thing to do here now would be to save or back up all the important stuff to disk or external hard drive, then totally reformat the hard drive again. That will sort all the problems, because I think when you tried the so called free X box thing, it was really a trojan and probably one of the worst. Lesson learned I hope. Nothing is free when it is an obviously pirated copy you think you are getting! Nev.
  11. Slightly puzzled by this, the fan should attach to the heat sink, or at least sit over the top of it, did you get a new heat sink with the processor and fan? Nev.
  12. OK Adrian thanks for the update and glad all is now OK with the new monitor. If disposing of the old monitor, please take it for recycling, thanks. Nev.
  13. We now can no longer give any advice or help. You have now quite openly admitted you are operating illegally and using illegal software. That is the most important part and the reason this thread is now also closed. Nev.
  14. Further to Kens post above, have you as yet installed any or all the windows updates? If not but intend doing so, please do not as yet install service pack 3. There are some issues with service pack 3 interfering with driver installation if the sound system is the Intel AC97 or later editions. If you already have installed service pack 3, let us know please. Nev.
  15. To add my two pence worth, I agree with all you have at the moment, though AdAware is getting a bit behind these days it is still a part of the overall armour. No single antispyware program can catch them all, it is better to have more than one and run scans consecutively one after the other, that way the next to run may catch those the first one missed. You are right in a sense about SpywareBlaster, it sits there in the background blocking the spyware it is configured to catch. In all cases, update each before running a scan, as most freeware does not include automatic updating, and in the case of SpywareBlaster, update regularly anyway as there is no scanning function, it is always "on". As to when to run scans, it is entirely down to your own preferences and should take into account whatever you do or use on the internet and how often, but as a rough guide once a week or even more frequently if you or your family are heavy users, especially if the younger generation are downloading music on a regular basis. I will also warn against the use of what is known as Peer to Peer websites, not only are they now a real threat in regard to including malware in whatever you download from them, a lot of content is also illegal and / or in breach of copyright laws. Hope that is of further help to you. Nev.
  16. Hi ed, have a look at the free (and some paid for) products we recommend here - http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html Nev.
  17. Hi Snake, it now looks like the drive itself may be duff and will need replacing! Have you looked in the BIOS to see if it is recognised there? Nev.
  18. Thanks also from me Danzil, it is important to remember that this great site can only exist because of any cash coming in. There are costs which mainly go to the server and the maintenance of the service provided by the server. We would certainly not be able to enjoy the features of this site without the income provided, either by donation or the little that advertising provides. As said, every little helps! Nev.
  19. That does put things in a different light. I wonder if Google can launch a full OS in time to be competitive with Windows7 when Microsoft launch it later this year?
  20. As far as I know, you will have to get the thermal compound separately, it doesn't come with the new CPU. I will also add that the existing stuff will probably have dried and may even need scraping (lightly and with care so as to not remove metal) so old thermal paste will not work. I know you are on a limited budget, but do be prepared to buy good paste and not just any cheap stuff. You may regret it later. Have you thought about upgrading the heat sink and fan to a better one too? that also will be a good investment rather than using the old one. Why remove power plugs and leads from the mother board? You should have the mains power turned off where the computer connects to the mains, unless a plug or lead is in the way, there should be no need to remove them from the board. Nev.
  21. It does indeed seem strange, but there may be a problem in the monitor that only happens once it has warmed up a little. We know now there is nothing wrong with your computer as a friends monitor works OK, as also you can get everything to come up on your TV. So I suggest taking your monitor round to your friends and trying your monitor on his computer. If it does the same thing then, it must be your monitor. Nev.
  22. I think Maynard means that any processor you want to fit must be the same as your motherboard a "Socket 775" I am not that well up on these things, but I assume a socket 478 CPU may not be compatible. Nev.
  23. Hi Dunsdale, I am back again. I was going in a round about way to a similar goal but my friend Tootech beat me too it.:) What we are seeing now is still a total shutdown but no warning or messages, even with the automatic restart disabled, yes? If so I am afraid it is more likely to be a hardware fault inside your computer. Considering the other CD drive is also affected, I am thinking the same way as Danzil now and it could be nothing more than the cable or cables inside that connect the two drives to the mother board. If you wish to go further yourself, don't be too concerned about treading new ground, we can describe in simple terms what to do, where to look, and how to do it all safely. All it takes is the simple removal of two screws and remove the lid to start. However if you don't feel confident enough and wish to take it elsewhere for repair, don't worry, it is also a thing to be recommended. Nev.
  24. Another day out in the good weather. I found my way in a round about sort of fashion, to the village of Dent in the Yorkshire Dales. It is a very old world sort of place with the main road through the middle still preserved as the original cobbled surface, using stone from the local river bed. Quite a common practice for rural roadways at one time. This first shot is of the main street at a junction, with the pub on the corner being one of those that brews its own beers. The second is a water fountain erected in the memory of Adam Sedgewick. He was one of the first in the field of geology, and was born in the village. The third shot is the main street or road bending off to the left past a recently refurbished building.
  25. Hi, can you answer my questions about makes and types please, without knowing them we can't help much. Nev.
