I also have it installed on my Windows 7 also with no problems so far, though I haven't had a need to install anything since that update. Considering it affects the MSI installer format which most installs use, I might see a problem then, just wait and see till I need to install something. Right at the moment I am contemplating doing the opposite, I have too much junk installed on here at the moment. Nev.

Must add, that RAM in the picture is not even DDR, it is only SD RAM as it has two notches, DDR, or Double Data Rate, has only one notch. Programs have disappeared from Control Panel
Plastic Nev replied to Guitarman's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK Jack, just to be sure that it is or isn't Avast or is a windows update instead, you will need to turn all updates to manual and not automatic. First find Windows Updates in the control panel. (I think Windows 8 is similar to 7 which Is all that I know) You should find "Change settings" click on that and then click the drop down menu and select "Check for updates, but let me choose Whether to download and install them" That will give you the choice when Windows updates are presented to untick them all except one, let that one download and install, then check the system, if still OK continue till all are done, if it is a Windows download you will find it that way. If it turns out to be a Windows update, right click on it and you will see the option to hide it so it can't be downloaded and installed again. Also check within Avast if there is an option to make update downloads and installation a manual process, that way you can prevent the update from downloading. Not having had Avast free or otherwise for some time, I cannot be sure if there is away to make updates manual. I will leave Starbuck to recommend which antivirus is currently regarded the best or at least good. Nev. -
Programs have disappeared from Control Panel

Hi Guitarman, now we have seen the logs from those cleaners, and after you have removed them as Starbuck asked, some more things to consider. I noticed two things, first you said that all was OK after doing a system restore, then some update then turned it all off again. The next thing I noticed is that you are running Avast. Is it the free version? We have stopped recommending avast due to far too many updates to the program causing problems, one other person I know of, the recent updates shut down her internet connection, also after some messing from the Avast technicians she found a paid for program no longer working and still no internet unless she turns Avast off, and it is the paid for version she is running. If you are running the free version, I would get rid and go for a different antivirus. First thing is do another system restore to a time everything was OK, Disconnect it from the internet to prevent that Avast update from coming in, then make sure you turn Avast off and uninstall it. First then is turn on Windows defender so you can safely reconnect to the internet, and then find a different antivirus. Nev. -
Programs have disappeared from Control Panel

Ok, first thing to now check is exactly where did the reinstall of Python go, did it go to the ordinary drive or to the C drive, which is where I would expect it to be unless you redirected it during the install. The programs on the ordinary drive do still open and work do they? Ken may be right if you ran C.Cleaner with the registry cleaner part, it may well have deleted registry redirects. They will have been put in place by the original install when you directed the installer to install it on the ordinary drive. Those redirects will have been put there so that windows knows where to open the program from when asked for it, as Windows normally works on the assumption that all programs will be installed to the C drive. If those programs still open and work OK from the other drive, I wouldn't worry too much as eventually Windows might put redirects back into the registry as you use the programs. Nev. -
No Problem George, let us know how you get on with it and any problems with it, we are here to help. Nev.

I would think yours will be George. The size is actually a reference to the actual disk inside, so once you have the drive out you can check, the case is around 2.75 or 70mm wide with length being around 4" or 102mm. approximately. I don't know of any laptop that ever used a 3.5 inch drive, though maybe some very early, or perhaps industrial strength things might have. A 3.5 inch drive is actually approximately 4 inches wide and just under 6 inches long. The one shown in that video I linked to looks a standard 2.5 inch one to me any way. Nev.

Hi, are you sure you are using the right hand side mouse button and not the left, as that which you are seeing is what you will get if using the ordinary left click button. It must be the right button when you see the cmd.exe. If all you are seeing is just cmd, and no .exe after it you may be only using an ordinary user account and not an administrator account in the first place. You must choose an administrator account at boot up if you have password access set. If that is not possible for whatever reason, then the other way is to get to the command prompt window from safe mode. first restart the computer and start tapping the F8 key, that should get you the advanced boot options page. Once that is opened up, use the up and down keyboard keys to move the highlight down to "Safe mode with command prompt", then click the enter key. It will take a short time first showing a list of drivers then the windows loading page, eventually you will see the administrator cmd.exe black with white writing page as I showed earlier, you can then type in the sfc /scannow as above. try that and let us know if that works for you please. Nev.

Hi George, indeed it can, or better still keep the hard drive and let the buyer find his or her own. You will of course have to remove the hard drive from it any way to do anything about cleaning it off considering the laptop is basically dead.. However if wishing to let the drive go with the dud laptop, first it will have to come out of the laptop, then it can be connected to a working computer. To do that connection an adapter to USB will be needed. Once connected, a simple format will prevent ordinary users from accessing the data, or if wishing to be sure it is definitely not able to be accessed by any one, there is software that can be used to write rubbish over the entire drive therefore wiping your data as it does so. However first things first, do you already know how to get the drive out of the laptop? We can hopefully look it up if not sure. Next thing is an adapter or caddy/enclosure. If intending keeping the drive, a caddy or enclosure is best so you can later use it as an external hard drive. Just to give you an idea of what to look for, here is an ordinary USB to SATA or IDE adapter, http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-external/harddriveenclosures/zht01..html Or a complete enclosure, which for some strange reason they are slightly cheaper than adapters. http://www.amazon.co.uk/2-5-Sata-eSata-External-Enclosure/dp/B000S89NQG once you have it connected, you can access all the data, (Providing of course the hard drive is OK and not the reason for the previous failures) Or, completely reformat it, if keeping it for your own future use, that will be good enough, however if you are going to sell it off with the rest of the laptop, and to prevent someone using data recovery software, you will need to use a data deleting software. A good description and good recommendations for free data destroying software from this site, http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/free-data-destruction-software.htm An edit to add, though you might already know how to remove the hard drive, it is I think the third, or maybe fourth thing this guy removes in this video, Hope that is all of some help George. Miracast on Windows 8.1
Plastic Nev replied to Andrea8411's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Andrea. We will need to know the make and model number of your PC as it may actually be a case that there isn't the hardware installed in it, or it may need hardware drivers updating if the hardware can work with it. So please let us know that make and model number of your computer so we can find out for you. Nev. -
Hi, Is this computer running Windows 7 ? You just might have got something slightly wrong, here are some screen shots of what you should see for each stage. After typing cmd.exe in the search bar, you should first see this. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Elevatedcmdp1_zps092b792a.png As shown right click on the cmd.exe and you should then see this box open up, ordinary left click on "Run as administrator" http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Elevatedcmdp2_zps07be95a5.png You will possibly see the security window asking if you wish to run this program, click on "Yes" if you do, and you should then see this window opens. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Elevatedcmdp3_zps07be95a5.png No need to click anything, just type sfc /scannow, make sure of the space between sfc and the /scannow as shown here, http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Elevatedcmdp4_zps758f7b9b.png next is to hit the enter key on the keyboard, the system file check will start, let it run till it finishes. Let us know please if anything is still not as shown and if possible can you show us a screen shot. If it works this time, let us know the result at the end of the check. Nev.

The simple answer is to explain that if running Windows 7 he should install the latest version of IE 11. He is risking his security running such an earlier version any way. Nev.

[Solved] re-install problems
Plastic Nev replied to Bringe's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, if you can, follow Kens advice regarding obtaining a USB wifi adapter, that will get you on line so that the drivers can be downloaded from its own search. Nev. -
Hi, the lines on the screen may not be a part of the present problem and are entirely separate. If they don't show on an external monitor, in this case your TV, I suspect a faulty screen. The other problem that has just surfaced could be an operating system glitch, or worse a hard drive glitch. So to start lets see what a system file check finds and if it can, repairs under an elevated command prompt. Click the start orb and type in the search box,-- cmd.exe That should then appear at the top of the list. You must right click on it and select "Run as administrator" you may get the window asking to allow the program to run, click yes. In the window at the flashing cursor type-- sfc /scannow please note there must be a space between the sfc and the / Click on the enter key, it will then check and attempt to repair any damaged files within the system. It will take some time and should display a percentage of its check while it runs. Let us know if it finds anything. If it does and reports it can't fix some files, run it again and even one or two times more as it does sometimes fix things on the second or third attempt. Nev.

Just remembered this thread, I did obtain the same model camera as DSTM, the Canon SX50HS, the zoom is astonishing so back to ordinary photography with a couple of shots of that large chunk of rock we call the moon. These were taken some time since in mid July with zoom at around 150 X or above, and are of the moon on the wane, (you get a better picture of the craters on the edge of the sunlight then) http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/68/69/96/w_moon10.jpg http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/68/69/96/w_moon11.jpg http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/68/69/96/w_moon12.jpg http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/14/68/69/96/w_moon13.jpg

[Solved] re-install problems
Plastic Nev replied to Bringe's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, if you have access to a working computer that can connect, download it to the desktop or somewhere you know where it is, than copy or transfer it to a flash drive to install to the computer we are working on. However from the description and photo's, it looks like the network device is integrated on the motherboard. If not clear who made it and model number, can you refresh us on the computer make and model, we might be able to find out from knowing that. Nev. -
[Solved] re-install problems
Plastic Nev replied to Bringe's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Speccy may be able to help in identifying the device too. Speccy is an analytic program that gives you information about most things within your computer. You can download and install the free version of Speccy from here :- http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/standard Instal the program and while doing so make sure to remove any ticks for things you don't want such as toolbars or free security scans etc. if there are any. Once installed, open the program, it will analyse your system and give you many results for different things, however the one we are interested in is to click on "Network" in the left hand column, it should show you what networking system is installed and maybe even what bit isn't working. You can highlight and copy the result to the thread. Nev. -
Hi, Although I don't know of that Lotus Smartsuite software, I suspect it is set up to use the Windows sound font. There are quite a lot of different sounds which were on XP that are not there or at least slightly different in Windows 7. So some sounds may never be recovered or usable. Lets take a look at what is there that may be able to be either modified or used. Typical of Windows there are at least two ways to get to the same point, you can either right click on the white speaker icon on the bottom task bar and then select "Sound" Or open the control panel and again select "Sound" in the window that then opens, make sure the "Sounds" tab is selected. There is a tremendously long list starting with Windows, Asterisk, Close program, Critical battery alarm, and so on. If you scroll down the list there are many different sounds associated with many aspects of Windows, and other programs. There are useful but basic instructions in that window as to how to set up a custom set of sounds and how to add or remove them, so have a look and see if there are entries for your program, but will possibly be without a speaker icon next to them. For sounds that are there you can click on the entry and then the "Test" button to hear it. If you create a custom set of sounds, you can make and add your own and make sure the sound you create is in the WAV format so that you can insert it. You can have a lot of fun with other sounds too, I created one for my E Mail notifier, which does startle folks visiting when it goes off. Nev.
-
Ah, it does still need to be set at "0" in the registry, that at least will enable internet connection, as we said at first, it isn't connected to the sound system, but it is needed to be working for internet. The sound problem itself and is the only thing you can find wrong are sounds your diary should make. Am I correct or is there other sounds missing? Which diary is it? Is it software you installed or some other diary that is part of Windows? Nev.

Hi, I have a direct download link for the Revo free version, which saves trying to make sure you have the free version, the page opens and straight away you will see the box asking where you wish the download to go, if downloads are already set to go to your downloads folder, or somewhere you know where they are, just click on the "Save File" button. Here is the link. www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-version.php Worth keeping that link yourself Ken. Nev. -
If any help, my system being OK with no problems and following the path as described, I find there is no "Disabled components" showing. That suggests that if you follow the instructions, it should then become the same as mine. As Ken said, no harm in having a look and also posting further screen shots, especially of what shows up if following the path by clicking on the "Disabled Components" (I think that should be a right click, try it if an ordinary left click does nothing) If you don't change anything in there yet all will be OK. Nev.

This is rather odd, it doesn't actually have anything to do with sound, or at least not directly. I have found there is quite a lot about this problem with the teredo tunnelling adapter and all the fixes I find are registry jobs which I am reluctant to offer, as the wrong thing done in there can cause more problems than fix any. I hope Ken may have a suggestion here so I will ask him to have a look, though it may well need that registry fix any way. Nev.
