  1. Hi, although I know of some differences in Windows 8.1 and the way Firefox shows some options, I wonder if you have this. Open tools, then select "Options", select the "Privacy" tab, in the lower part of that window for history, do you have a tick box for "Clear history when Firefox closes" if so and there is a tick in the box, remove the tick. Nev.
  2. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Bertie. Can you please read and follow the instructions here on this link, then post the results. One of our security and malware removal guys will move this thread to the malware removal forum once you have done so. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/10689-Before-posting-for-Malware-Removal-help-WinXP-Vista-and-Win7#.U4RkQig1CCA Nev.
  3. We as forum staff mark them as solved Jimmy, but I will leave this for a day or so, just in case you need to come back if a problem surfaces later. Otherwise glad to have helped. Nev.
  4. Ah, yes, that clock. thanks for letting us know. If you try to do anything it does of course disappear again, however, remember the trick of the print screen key if needing a picture of any thing of that nature, drop down menus etc. it can come in handy for anyone wanting to show us contents of drop downs, or even anything to do with that clock. Nev.
  5. Actually, the "My Conputer" properties window is only the properties of a shortcut, for example an icon on the desktop, it is not showing the properties of the computer itself. If you click on the start, then right click on computer or my computer in the list there, and then properties, you should get the full system window open. Though not having Windows 8 I can't be sure of that. However, as Ken said, you haven't apparently done anything with the accidental hit of "Copy" instead of "Paste". My guess is that whatever was copied, just went to the normal hidden clipboard, just the same as anything copied does. When the computer was shut down, the clipboard automatically empties itself so nothing should have changed. If your daughter and grandchildren have access to your computer while connected to your WiFi, then the computer is actually in a network with them during that time. If that is the case, they (Daughter and children) can see everything on your computer while they are connected, that is because as it seems the whole computer is in a shared status. That can be changed if required by clicking on the "Sharing" and "security" tabs, we can possibly help if required to change anything. Nev.
  6. I don't understand exactly what has happened here, hitting "Copy" instead of "Paste", should only have put copies of files in the clipboard, not shifted files around, and in fact if nothing was highlighted or selected, it shouldn't have copied anything. However, I would look at trying a system restore back to before you did this, hopefully things will return to where they were. Nev.
  7. Hi, just so we all understand now, your internet connection enters the house upstairs in an attic office, and into a router provided by UPC your internet provider. You then have a cable connecting to the original router downstairs. At this stage it might help if you can tell us the make and model number of both routers so we can look up the details. As Ray said, in this instance, one or both routers may require settings changed, so we will need that information to explain how. Nev.
  8. If I can just slip in here, for future reference, to find "C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86)" Click the start orb, then click on "Computer", at the top of the window it will show the drives and how full each one is if more than one, in my case it says "Packard Bell, (C: ) and also Data (D: ) a double click on the (C: ) will open the list of contents and both "Program files" and "Program files (x86)" will be there. That is just if required in the future. For now, please follow Starbucks instructions. Nev.
  9. Just to add to KenB's advise, look around your existing hard drive first to see if the total of used space has doubled, and if so look deeper to see if Macrium put the clone on or in to some odd folder somewhere. Considering it took around the usual time, it must have put the clone somewhere. If that has happened, and you find it, it may be best to delete it as the next full clone will of course include it otherwise.
  10. Hi, I meant to ask, what file format is shown for the files you have created, is it .wav or .mp3 ? I also found a few complaints about that player/digitiser listed on various sites via Google. To be quite honest, if you have already got a decent cassette player with a stereo 3mm output jack, connect that to a line in or other audio input jack on your computer, (Not digital input) Windows own media player or the free open source Audacity will record a use-able file with no problem. You could of course try Audacity with that digitiser as well, so if you don't have Audacity, here is the download site. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ I must also warn to watch out for unwanted bundled software and remove ticks from boxes where the download or install offers these unwanted things, also if a choice of automatic or advanced for both download or install, use the advanced as that is where you will find the junk which would get installed without your knowledge if using the automatic function. That warning is now standard for all downloads of free softwares. Once Audacity is installed, there is a button to select the input device, it should show the digitiser there, if not there is definitely something wrong with it. Nev.
  11. OK, I only spoke to a salesman type, who did know basic technology which is better than some, however, the signal is not satellite and is ground based using mobile telephone type masts for distribution. Encryption to a hundred and something bit which is supposedly the same security used by the banks for their wireless high speed systems for data between banks, which apparently has been in use for some time. My ISP, which is Supanet are offering various deals which are available for slower speeds of around 12MB/s up to at least 30MB/s or higher, pricing being around a two year contract at just over £12 a month for the first year, then goes to around £21 a month, that is for the 30MB/s. Most of it is based around either the HS4 or 6G services according to the leaflets I have been given. Not much more info available on here :- http://www.thebroadbandshop.co.uk/ Looking at the deal for HS4 as a direct thing, it looks like My ISP, "Supanet" are working with them to be offering the 30MB/s , however I now see there is a 500 GB cap on downloads, that is something I forgot to ask about while in the shop. However, considering my hard drive is also 500GB, I doubt I would ever download that much over a month. Nice idea Ken, though I doubt I would get that sort of deal from them, however I will ask and see if I can twist an arm or two. :D Nev.
  12. Hi, beginning to suspect a fault, either with the actual hardware, or the accompanying software here. The file or files you have created so far, right click one and select properties, on the general tab it should tell you the size of the file and the size on disk, if you can let me know that, plus the actual playing time of the song please. For example, a six minute piece of music I have, has a file size of over 6MB, if your file size for similar length of playing time is only a few KB, it obviously hasn't actually recorded any sound data. Can you also please give me details of the cassette digitiser, make and model number, then I can look up for information thanks. Nev.
  13. I first learned about this from a telephone call from the ISP which due to being busy I had to cut it short. However the company does run a shop in the town and I am hoping to get in and discuss the whole thing at much greater length. At present I have a pretty basic standard over the telephone line service which at its best is around 7 to 8MB/s, at its worst, slower than dial up. They are promising speeds up to 30MB/s via the wireless connection. From information found elsewhere, the service is a little like a giant hotspot similar to the smaller coverage you can find in internet cafe's or similar. I assume they must have antenna on the mobile phone masts dotted about round the town. Anyway, once I can have a talk with these people and learn more about it, it is looking like I might be the guinea pig to try this out perhaps.
  14. Hi, these cassettes, I assume they are music and not video as well? If video and that is showing, but no sound? I have to assume they are music or other sound only for the moment. so let's see where your settings are. With the digitiser plugged in and ready to be used, right click on the loudspeaker icon bottom right of the task bar, and then click on "Recording devices" In the window that then opens, it should show the digitiser, if it does click on it to highlight it. Properties should then become active and not greyed out, so click on it and another window should open. Click the tab for "Listen" You should see a tick box for "Listen to this device", put a tick in that box, then click "Apply," then OK to close out. See if it actually does record sound then. Nev.
  15. Hi Mokles, I assume the cassette digitiser is plugged into a USB port, let me know if otherwise please. However, if indeed it is plugged into a USB port, a few things to look into as it may require some settings changing in your sound system. I will go through those once I know for sure it is via USB. In the mean time, first of all do you know where the digital sound file is being put, and if so, once recorded does the file play through a media player? Nev.
  16. Hi all, for once it is me asking for a little information and if anyone else has any experience of this. My ISP got in touch to tell me they are now running a new service, being an independent service provider they have no access to the cable network and therefore provide broadband via the BT telephone lines. In view of the fact that the BT line is always going to be slow they have installed a wi fi system in the area and I can sign up for a connection speed much higher than it is at present. All it will involve is a technician will install an antenna to pick up the wi fi signal and I assume a router for a one off charge of around £20 to £30. Just wondered if anyone else is on a similar connection, and what their views on it are. Nev.
  17. Hi again Doug, no problem for now, you are of course right about XP, it has run its course and to be honest she may be better off either buying a new computer with either Windows 7 or 8 on it, or doing the same as you and running two different flavours of Linux and removing the XP altogether, though whichever way she goes should back up all data, documents, pictures, music, etc preferably on an external hard drive so it isn't lost in whatever move she makes. Nev.
  18. No problem DSTM, it may be all that is required any way. Firstly Teresa, please do not post any more in other forums, we will continue from here then it is all in one place, I shall delete the other posts you have made on old threads. Next if the suggestion by DSTM doesn't work, can you please tell us which antivirus and which antimalware you have already used to save us asking you to use the same again. Also have you tried a different mouse, or the same mouse on a different computer, and if so what were the results? If you can answer those questions for us and if we do have to look into a malware problem, we can then go further. One of our malware experts will be along to help you shortly if that is required.. Nev.
  19. Hi Doug, Your friends problem should really be a new thread then we don't get confused as to which machine we are dealing with. However, for now, if all you have for the XP side of it is the recovery disk, I am afraid a repair is not possible with that, only a full reinstall, which will of course wipe that partition. It needs a full Microsoft XP disk to do an XP repair, recovery disks will not. Nev.
  20. Hi again Peter, information seems a little hard to obtain as possibly the 545 and 546 may be fairly new on the market. However the 541 colour cartridge looks similar and here is a video I found for that one. A bit difficult to see being black plastic, however if you watch carefully, three holes need to be drilled, one near the top middle, with one to the left lower down and one to the right lower down. Although he filled each with blue in the left, red in the middle and yellow in the right, be careful to check. Once the holes are drilled, push in a needle or fine wire, then wipe it on some paper to check the colour is correct for each hole before injecting fresh ink in. Sorry, but unless someone else has some practical experience and can give further advice, it is the best I can do. Nev.
  21. Hi James, just to add, if you do need to start a new thread about your RAM, please tell us as much as you can find out about the existing RAM that you have, plus all details of the new RAM, add to that as well the make of motherboard or at least full details of the computer if not a custom build. Nev.
  22. Hi Sooty, like Ken I am also a lot in the dark and know nothing about the Linux distro's, however if it was a windows machine there is a disk management tool where you can see the disk and the partitions on it. It is in there that a partition can be reformatted. Do you have access in the linux systems to similar? One thing to be careful of, whichever partition you wish to format, do make sure it is not the partition you are actually running from. Also if there is data on that partition that you wish to keep, do make sure you store it somewhere else first. Nev.
  23. Thanks once again DSTM, and now having read through that page you linked to, plus knowing already that Macrium automatically formats the drive before installing the clone, Macrium Reflect should be all that you need James, there should be no need to format the drive again first, as Macrium will do that for you. Nev
  24. Ah, thanks DSTM, the ability to enlarge or create full sized partitions may be a fairly recent addition to Macrium Reflect. It certainly wasn't available on the earlier free versions of it when I was first doing clones. Nev.
  25. Edited, as KenB posted seconds before me, this is as a follow on from Kens advice. Hi, to go back to what DSTM said, firstly reformat the hard drive, then create a 500GB partition to install the clone onto, then activate the unallocated space as a second active partition. To do that I would recommend a third party partition making program rather than the all too basic Windows own program, which may be the reason why you had trouble. I have used the EasUS Partition master free version with good success from here :- http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm Unless you fancy all the bells and whistles of the paid for version, you do only need the free one. There are of course quite a few other good partitioning programs, entirely up to you which you use. Whichever program you download and use, please watch out for unwanted bundled junk wares, wherever you see an option for "Custom" download or install, use it, as the automatic systems is where they hide the junk, some of which can be difficult to remove later, and in some cases the junk has proven to be downloaders for full on malwares. Once you have created the respective partitions onto the hard drive, install the clone onto the first 500GB partition, because the other 500GB is also an active partition, you first shrink that second partition leaving space in between the two partitions, then expand or resize the clone partition into the space. I expanded a 250GB (C: ) drive into the other 250GB (D: ) Data drive on a 500GB drive doing it that way with no trouble using the EasUS partition master. You can shrink the second partition down to a couple of KB or more for storing stuff that you wish to be sure you still have a copy in case of an inadvertent deletion. I shrank mine to 50 GB as I wanted the space for important stuff. Or completely shrink it to virtually nothing if you wish. Nev.
