  1. Nasty indeed, if the hackers can get malware into a malware removal tool, what next? Nev.
  2. And thanks from me too, might be a good idea to warn folk when advising to install the real malwarebytes to beware of this fake, and be sure they get the right website. Nev.
  3. Hi, which computer is this happening on, make model etc please. If it doesn't have much in the way of RAM, or a slow processor, it may be the playing of the Youtube video is hogging resources, so it then has to wait till something is free enough to allow whatever key command you put in. If you have other video such as a DVD, or one stored on the hard drive, do you see similar symptoms when playing one of them? Try a look in Task Manager, if W7 a quick way is open the "Run command window with the Windows flag key and the letter "R" together, copy and paste - taskmgr into the Open bar and click OK, once it opens click the Performance tab, then while running a Youtube video check both the CPU graph and the memory graph, if both or either show high usage, there is the reason for wayward responses to key strokes. Nev.
  4. Hi Claw and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Nev.
  5. Synapse mentioned the safe to remove, it is always a good idea to use that. If a USB drive is removed while the system is still accessing data on the drive, it can sometimes result in the corruption of files you appear to have suffered. The safe to remove option can also be used from the Windows explorer window, as the drive will show on the bottom left hand side, right click on the drive, then select "Eject" you will then get the small window on the bottom right telling you it is safe to remove the drive. 6. Hi kaos, have a look at this thread, http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/14803-Can-I-add-RAM-and-Upgrade-to-Windows-7 Follow what our Randy suggested, that should let you know if it can be upgraded or not. Nev.
  7. Try entering the file name into the search window and see if the little doggy finds it on your computer, the folder it is in may give more clues. Nev.
  8. Hi, after all that has been done so far is the data now there or still not showing? I must admit, I forgot this was in FAT32 file system and Maynard is correct though, which makes me annoyed at myself for not spotting that earlier. I am however still lost now as to how we can access those files though, but hopefully Ken may have another idea. There is software available and free, but that is usually only used for retrieving deleted files, and may not even work in this case. So I am reluctant to suggest that until Ken has had another look. Nev.
  9. At least it looks like we are going in the right direction, though now beyond my limits of knowledge, I will have to leave you with Ken and hopefully it can be resolved for you. Nev.
  10. Hi, OK, it just might be a matter of permissions, open that Properties window again, then click the security tab as in this screen shot. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/Diskpropertiessecurity.jpg In the top listing you should see various types of user, in my case I clicked on Administrators, for myself. In the bottom list as in the screen shot, there should be the row of ticks. If not, click the edit button, select which account you wish to have those controls in the top list, then place ticks in all boxes, click apply, then OK. A window should open showing security, and changing settings, or similar. let it run and all should be OK. Hopefully that is all is wrong. Nev.
  11. Hi, for chkdsk to run you need administrator privileges. To get that for an external drive I am not too sure about, easy for your internal as that is just a right click and choose to run as administrator.
  12. Hi, curiouser and curiouser, as Alice said. OK it should show you those if there is nothing else after the AVI, jpg, MP3 etc. lets see what is actually happening first. When you connect the hard drive, does autoplay open a window? If so can you show us a screen shot of what does come up please. If no window opens, click on Windows explorer and open that, the "F" drive should show there under Computer, right click on the drive, does it show "Open Autoplay", It will of course be in your language but if it does show, click on it and then show us a screen shot please. if you do see the autoplay window what then opens if you click "Open folder to view files" ? In Windows explorer an ordinary left click on the "F" drive should also open the folders anyway. Let us know what you see whichever way you go. Nev.
  13. Hi, not too sure where the Mac idea comes from, but as a direct result from Corsair themselves, they say it is guaranteed to work on Intel or AMD, that to me means any operating systems, Windows, Mac, Linux or any other, shouldn't make any difference. Have a look at their own specifications for it here= http://www.corsair.com/en/corsair-memory-4gb-ddr3-sodimm-memory-cmso4gx3m1a1333c9.html Nev.
  14. Hi, well everything shows up OK as far as used space is concerned, I can only guess now and ask does your TV show you the file type and extensions, they just may not be of a type that Windows can recognise without perhaps some third party software, but to know that we need to know the file type and extension. Nev.
  15. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Have you looked either in "Computer", or "Disk management" and does it actually show up in there? If in "Computer" right click and select properties of it and let us know what it says. For Disk management with the external drive not connected, a quick way to get there is press the Windows flag key and the letter R, this will open the "Run" command box, then copy in = diskmgmt.msc Then click OK. Then connect the external drive, it should then show up, this is a screen shot of my small 180GB drive connected, (highlighted in Yellow) in my shot it shows NTFS as "File system", if yours is still formatted as FAT32 it should say so, I am hoping it doesn't say RAW. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/plasticpig/DiskManagement.jpg Let us know what you find please, Nev.
  16. Hi, first try all of RandyL's suggestions as you didn't say if that copy of Windows 7 is just that or Windows 7 service pack 1. If that SP1 isn't in, then later updates will cause confusion to the system. The update trouble shooter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358#method1 or the System Update Readiness Tool should help in that, but if not, you may need to find Service Pack 1 and install that first. Nev.
  17. Hi Shvensk, I looked up that error code for you and it just may be tied to a security update, have a look at this Microsoft help page, see if any of it applies. Check out also other things that are linked in that write up too. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904423 Being also tied to SCVHost, it may also be a possible malware problem, but we will worry about that if the Microsft article doesn't help. Nev.
  18. I am still convinced the original drive is sticking at first power up and not spinning up to speed or is doing so too slowly, hence the normal start of the BIOS, but then the black screen. The Bios has found a drive or you would get the message "No Bootable volume" It just can't read it if the disk is running too slowly, or hasn't got up to normal speed. A way to find out perhaps would be to dismount it from the case, leave it connected or reconnect the electrical cables, and hold it in your hand as you boot the computer, if it spins up you will feel very slight vibration as the disk spins up, no vibration and it obviously hasn't done, a slight tap on its case with a small screwdriver handle at that point and see if it spins up then. Nev.
  19. Thanks Ken for popping in with that advice. All good idea's. Nev.
  20. Hi, sorry but games and overclocking is way over my head, I am more a hardware and sounds guy, so can't really help. You might just be better off starting a new thread, maybe in the games section or forum, but link back to this thread so whoever takes up the help will know to look here first. Nev.
  21. Hi, OK we can try and see if we can transfer the entire set up onto the new drive. You say it is a 1TB, which is fine as it is twice the size of the original, once we get the complete system transferred onto it the existing partitions can either be expanded, or the unused other 500GB can be made into a different partition, however we will discuss that later. First the RAM question, is it a 32 bit system you installed or 64 bit? If 32 bit then 4GB is the maximum anyway, if 64 bit it then depends on the motherboard. A good way to find out is to go to the crucial website and get it to run a scan to tell you the maximum you can install, with recommendations as to the type of RAM as well. It is best to use internet explorer as the scanner will work directly, any other browser, you will have to download and install the scanner. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ Now for the transfer of your system to the new drive. Once you have got it to boot and as long as it stays running after that, you need to download one of the free imaging programs, there are several such as "EasUS To Do", which I don't know that well, or there is "Macrium Reflect", this I use as a periodic back up myself. You will need your external drive connected with at least the same size available in free space as the amount of data you already have on the computer, and preferably the full 500GB size of the computers internal drive. Next is to download the Macrium Reflect software and here I will point you to KenB's own forum as he wrote a full description and gave the link for the free version of Macrium reflect. http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6963042/1/#new And also the second half of how to use it to rescue or in your case install to a fresh new drive. http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6963042/1/#new You will see in the second half he mentions the rescue disk, ideally that should be created straight after creating the image onto your external hard drive. I will also add that I found the Linux disk to not work with my system and external hard drive, for some reason it couldn't find or recognise my external drive. So I will recommend you download and create the Windows PE disk, even though it can take up to two hours to download and burn the disk, it is well worth doing as that disk will work with all and any hard drive. once you have created the image, and made the disk, connect your new drive into place and remove the old drive or at least disconnect all cables to it. Next is to go to the BIOS of your system and make sure it is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive, put the rescue disk in the drive, make sure the external hard drive is connected, then tell the computer to boot up normally, follow the instructions as per the link from there. Read everything through in those links and anything you are not sure about please ask before you start, it may be too late to ask once you have started the process. Myself or KenB will be able to answer you so no problems there and I will ask Ken to keep an eye on this thread as tomorrow I am at work all day. Nev.
  22. An old Cherokee told his grandson, "My son there is a battle between two wolves inside us all" "Ones is Evil! It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth." The grandson thought about this for a while, and then asked "Which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed" -Author unknown. Nev.
  23. Hi, that is still all random isn't it, suggesting a possibly sticking at start up hard drive. However, I have looked up that ngen.exe error and found it is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework if genuine. Have a look here about it= http://www.file.net/process/ngen.exe.html I feel that may be a red herring though and if I am right about the main hard drive sticking, once it does start to spin, if slow there may well be read errors. I see from your first post you tried a chkdsk and it found no problems, but have you tried running the system file checker, SFC Scannow? Nev.
  24. Hi, thanks for the feedback and please let us know how you get on. Just out of curiosity, which software and midi controllers if any are you using, I play around and still learning as there is a lot to learn, but do have Finale 2012, and on an older XP machine, also Sibelius and band in a box. I am trying to get my head round the subltle art of arranging, I can write a tune, just can't seem to get it right after that. Nev.
  25. Hi, first a welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Next is a little advice, there is no need to post the same question everywhere on the forum, I now have to delete all the other random and useless, not to mention confusing posts. Although I know little about Windows 8 as I have not yet even tried it so can't help, but someone with the right knowledge will be along soon. Please remember this forum is run by volunteers just like me and cannot be on hand twenty four seven. So a little more patience will be rewarded, after all you have had the problem for a week, a few more hours isn't going to be the end of the world is it? Nev.
