1. It would be a challenge indeed Ken, but can we make do with pictures for now? Here is a nice arctic roll and strawberries. http://i28.servimg.com/u/f28/14/68/69/96/arctic10.jpg
2. Hi, as has been said, It really does need a good deal of upgrading and all round as suggested. I also deal quite a bit in video and recently bought a HD capable camera. As video technology improves, such as the high resolution HD formats available now, and no doubt will get even better, we are getting to the point where high end gaming machines are the way to go in order to handle all the extra data that these video's contain. I already have Windows 7 64bit, a quad core CPU, 4GB RAM, and a 7,200 RPM Seagate HDD, but not yet got a graphics card and relying as yet on the graphics chips on the motherboard. (Intend doing a build later to improve on RAM, so a card will be obtained then.) Editing using the latest Windows Moviemaker, and during playback in that there is some odd stuttering, however once the video has been saved after editing, it does play well, and uploaded a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway on to youtube for friends to view. If interested to view quality, it is here= unfortunately it is only WMV high definition and not a better format available, as the only paid for video editor I have actually needs higher specs to work well. The end of it all though, it means even I should look at an upgrade of at least buying a graphics card to improve the handling. Because I am limited by the motherboard, more RAM is not possible, so intend a new build as and when the other bills have been paid. However as an interim thing for yourself, a better graphics card might help a little, and at least if you intend building in the future, it will already be there to use then. Nev.
3. Hi, yes in Kens absence, do carry on doing it that way, enable one each time you reboot, hopefully that should then show up which is the problem. Nev.
4. Hi, we are seeing quite a few odd glitches with the Windows 7 backup system, myself included, as I could never get a backup to actually do anything, it told me it had, it put a folder on the external hard drive, but the folder was empty. I gave up on it and now use third party imaging software that I know does work and works well. There are quite a few free ones to choose from, including Easus Todo backup, and Macrium Reflect. If wanting any more information on that please ask, as I went for the Macrium Reflect, so can guide you through the install and use. Nev.
5. Hi, Sorry to say but the BIOS chip is not a plug in but is soldered directly into the motherboard in most circumstances. If as you say there is no response at all from the Dell key, it looks like the whole BIOS is dead and beyond normal recovery. I have found instructions to perform recovery, in one case it does require specialist equipment if an older machine, however these instructions refer to a desktop machine and not a laptop, which of course is a lot more difficult to access the motherboard unless you know exactly what you are doing. Have a look here= http://www.technibble.com/how-to-recover-from-a-bad-bios-update/ If any of that applies and you are confident in dismantling your laptop to do it, plus you did first copy the BIOS update to disk, as you will need it, then give it a try. Otherwise I suggest ringing round a few repair specialists, explain where you are at, and ask if they can sort it and how much they will charge, try a few different places to get a good idea of what is needed. Nev.
6. Hi and welcome from me too, we are all here to help, not criticise. We all started off knowing nothing, and learned from there on. As said, post wherever you think is the right place, it normally is for most folk anyway, and we will take it from there. Just try to tell us as much as you know about the problem, and if known, the make, model, and type the problem computer is. Nev.
7. Hi and welcome Pinchy, if as it sounds is a browser problem, then post in that section, or stick to Vista if you wish. Post as much information that you can please, which browser you are using, Internet Explorer, Firefox, or other, and though may seem not much, the make and model of your computer sometimes helps. Nev.
8. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. It is not looking good I am afraid as it does now look that you stopping it half way through has left you with a BIOS or CMOS chip with no firmware at all. Have you tried a reboot, and start tapping Del or delete key right from pushing the start button? If so what result? Nev.
9. Hi Brian and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Firstly I may have to remove that E Mail address if it is public. That is for your protection as spammers search for that sort of thing and will then inundate your mail with spam. If someone does get in contact, it is safest to use our Private Message system for passing addresses. next is where best to post your problem, I would suggest posting and starting a thread in either Windows 2000 and XP, or if earlier equipment and computers, then perhaps Dos 95, 98. to ME. Start anew thread there and tell us as much as possible, the type of program you need to run, and what computer or computers do you have at present, plus list the hardware you have for connecting to these radio's. Nev. Edit to add, your E Mail doesn't show to the public so all is fine. Nev.
10. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help John. Can you please tell us exactly which model and number (if any) please. How did you perform the reset to factory settings? If done from a recovery partition it should have either reinstalled Windows 7 or left the operating system alone. When new did you create any system restore disk or disks? In most cases where that is needed there is a warning at or from first start up to do so, did you get anything like that from new? If Windows 7 has been lost and is not on the recovery partition, you may have to write to Acer for them to send replacement disks, which they may charge a small fee for. Let us know any answers to my questions and we will see if we can go further. Nev.
11. Why exactly are you running a completed project through an encoder? I have not fully understood the purpose of those and what exactly it does any way. Help me on that and I may be able to help you find either a better way or quicker, but bear in mind all processing takes time. But I did answer the processing side of the question here= http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/13718-How-can-I-make-rendering-faster
12. Let us know how that goes please, and if still no change we will go back to Starbuck and see if his other option can work for you. I will let him know if that is the case. Nev.
13. For the benefit of others, this was resolved in our software section here= http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/13713-Solved-Black-bars-on-video-after-rendering-help! Nev.
14. Hi Can you not print the document then scan it back in? or do you not yet have a printer/scanner? The option of Open Office as mentioned by KenB is probably best, however if Open Office has problems let us know, as there are ways to make Open Office accept documents from the Microsoft Office programs where it may refuse them. A final way round is to highlight all the document via "Select all" or via mouse pointer, copy it, then paste to a fresh page. Nev.
15. If you want quality, which for your purposes yes you do, so patience is the word, any introduction of speed in rendering drops frames, or causes pixel reduction. Sorry but as yet, there is no magic wand other than massive upgrades of harware, things like multiple core (as in 6 or more) CPU running at more than 3GHz, a lot more RAM, and motherboard plus operating system for 64bit, a good fast top end graphics card, and also a SSD drive, even then processing video will still take time. Nev.
16. Hum, I seem to remember answering this on another thread somewhere, however it looks like I got part of it wrong now as I also thought it was Youtube and not the editing software. At least you sorted it and thanks for letting us know. Nev.
17. Being two separate programs I don't know of any way to synchronise startup of both together, however Audacity being an editable recording, I suggest starting that first, then Fraps, once recording is finished and before you combine the two, edit out or delete the unused section at the start in Audacity. Nev.
18. Hi and thanks for that, yours having 8GB of RAM it looks like there are two 4GB sticks, there is a description of how to access them in this downloadable manual here= http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/M17x/en/mm/mm_en.pdf Give it time to download all of the manual as some other parts of it may be useful to you at some other time, just click the up down keys to change pages. The link goes to page 32, the start of the removal and upgrade sections. Scroll down each page till you get to the one titled "Upgrading/Replacing Memory" you will see from that where the cover is, that it is held on with two small screws and instructions how to remove the two sticks. I suggest removing one, then swapping with the other and run up with just one in at a time. There may be some slowness with one stick in but if there is a fault on one it will possibly be even slower or refuse to run at all. Do please take note of the safety instructions at the start of the section before removing the cover, and disconnect the mains powered supply and the battery, plus any other connections such as ethernet cables or other connections. Nev.
19. Video of the train ride is now up here=
20. You need something like this to make 'em jump out of the way, sneak up behind 'em and give 'em a blast. http://i48.servimg.com/u/f48/14/68/69/96/horn_c10.jpg
21. Hi, till now I hadn't realised this was a laptop machine, my bad and should have looked a bit closer at the logs, there are clues there I missed. OK so there should be a small plate underneath, quite often with a chip logo either stamped or moulded into the cover surface, if the RAM is of the removable type it usually slides out. (Power off and battery removed for safety) can you tell us what make and model the laptop is and we can research into how or what needs to be done to access the RAM. Nev.
22. Hi, from the user manual I can't see exactly how to open that subwoofer, other than the four screws on the main input/output and control panel, so assume the whole unit may slide out of the box. As for what you find once that is done I cannot say except to be careful of cables going to the subwoofer speaker which is obviously mounted on the main box itself. Once you have got that far, check for obvious things like connectors loose and partly out of their socket, any signs of burning especially on any part of the circuit cards, and also check capacitors for either split open tops or gunge leaking out of the bases. If signs of either of the last two things I mention, you may be best trying an electronics repair specialist, especially as the latter, blown capacitors can have a knock on effect damaging other components. In fact if that is found, I would be sending it back to whoever you bought it from and ask for a refund, as plainly it isn't in working order if that sort of thing is found. Let us know what you find first please once you have opened it up. Nev.
23. Hi, I put in an edit just after you logged back in so you might not have seen that I found a link for the user manual, is that of any help for you? I will have a look at it myself first before answering if there is a chance of sorting it yourself. Nev.
24. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, this is quite an old system so I assume you bought it as second hand. There should be from what I gather from what I can find about it, one large box that connects to the sound card output port, then five speakers that connect to the box. You are saying that one speaker is not working, but will if plugged into another port. I go along with the chance of a damaged port, or amplifier feeding that port, if that is what is happening, does any speaker out of the five work in that particular port? or do all of them not work in it? In fact, because you say you can hear static noise on a speaker plugged into that port, I will guess it is actually the amplifier at fault. Edit to add, I found a source for the user manual if you didn't get it with the system, have a look here= http://download.cambridgesoundworks.com/manuals/DTT2200.pdf Nev.
25. Hi, until Starbuck gets chance to look through again, I notice in one report there is some removable memory connected? I assume that is either a flash card or pen drive, and is the drive you used to run the first recovery program, is it still connected? if so remove it for now and check if doing so improves things. (Don't forget to use the safely remove hardware system, right click on the drive and select "Eject") Also, once Starbuck has reported back, and only after that, I now think there may be a memory problem in the main RAM, again that shows in the reports as being 8GB, how is that arranged, is it four modules of 2GB or some other arrangement? To rule out if there is a problem, it will mean taking all modules or sticks out, clean all contacts with a pencil eraser, then just put one stick back and run the machine. It will be slow, but if no instability, take that one back out, then try another until all sticks have been tried one at a time, hopefully, if a damaged one is present it will show up straight away. Please wait till Starbuck gives us an answer though before proceeding with that. Nev.
