A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph 's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?" The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302." The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room." After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news." The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?" The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me anything here!"

Hi if by metal thing, you mean the heat sink, then if that has been removed, it should be cleaned and new paste applied before fitting it back. If you have or even haven't disturbed it, it is still a good idea to replace the thermal compound anyway. I would certainly be doing it if I was having such high temperature issues as your are. There are many tutorial video's on how best to clean off the old paste and replace it with new paste, this guy shows a good way to do it. Though you will see there are many other video's in the right hand listing on the Youtube page. Nev.

Windows has suddenly stopped working
Plastic Nev replied to busylizzie's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Lets look at the chance of a virus or other malware being responsible as it does sound very likely. Click on this link, and first read all the instructions, then please follow them. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/10689-Before-posting-for-Malware-Removal-help. Once you have the requested logs, start a new thread and post the explanation you have given here, or link back to this thread, and post the logs here= http://extremetechsupport.com/forums/141-Malware-Infection-Removal One of our malware experts will look after you from there. For now stick to the copy MSI sent, though I feel that is likely to only be a recovery disk and may not carry a full copy of Windows 7. Though I may be wrong about that as they sent two disks. However, now I have had chance to read this again and your first post, I am a little worried about the BIOS itself. You say you managed to get into the laptop OK, did you notice if there is one of the coin cells fitted to the laptop motherboard, you may need to look on the component side of the motherboard for it if there is one. If there is, and I assume power is off and battery removed at this point, remove that coin cell and leave it out for five minutes, then replace, making sure it goes back in the same way up that it came out. That should at least reset the BIOS to default settings and hopefully be able to at least get to the BIOS settings page. Also check that the first time you looked didn't disconnect anything. It may still not boot if my assumption is correct about the hard drive. If so, the way to be sure one way or the other is to remove the hard drive and then connect it to a 2-1/2 inch SATA to USB adapter to then connect to another but working computer. You can at least then retrieve any important data from the drive if it will work at all. If it won't and the other computer doesn't recognise a drive is connected, that will confirm it is dead. Nev.

Hi, to all involved here, and a warning, Hotmail accounts have been targeted quite a lot recently and the way the hackers have been doing it is by using random password generators. These things run through what are mainly commonly used types of password and they are then fired at the account they will have got your name and address for. These are usually harvested off those E Mails you get that are the type where you are asked to pass them on. By the time you see it there are many addresses on the top of it as to where it has been already, and the hacker who generated the E Mail in the first place is usually one of them and collecting all those extra addresses. So, the answer is to not bother with sending these things on and delete them, that way the hacker won't get your address, and secondly and most importantly is create a strong password. That is best done with random letters, interspersed with random numbers. The Password generators will certainly be very unlikely to guess it in the time allowed by the MSN or Hotmail server computers. Also change that password on a regular basis too so that even if they do gain access and use your account for spamming, they won't for very long if you have changed the password. Also, be aware this is happening, and if a friend or contact asks or even moans he has received spam or junk mail supposedly from you, change your password straight away. The same should be done for friends or contacts who seemingly send you spam and junk, let them know and tell them to change their password. As for slow mail sending, I would try to get in touch personally and ask if there is a reason, as it may well be the Hotmail people monitoring that it doesn't carry the typical spam signatures, before allowing it to go on. USB through a NES controller port
Plastic Nev replied to KeNnO's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hum, one thing I am not sure about as I have never taken a USB plug or port to bits, however I would assume that the screen or shielding may well be connected to one of the contacts in the USB plug, that is providing there is a shield on the cable in the first place. As I say I haven't gone that far to check it out. However if the shielding is connected to one of the USB connections, then it will have to be connected to the similar NES connection. If you have a meter that can be set to continuity, once you have cut a USB plug off, (Leave enough cable to strip the outer off and bare the internal wires) you should be able to find what is what. Thinking about it, the shield would possibly be connected to the metal outer of the USB plug. The USB plug itself has four connections, how many are there on the NES ports? if more, then use one of them for the screen or shield, just make sure that the same connection pin inside the case is connected to the metal of the case. Best of luck as that soldering is going to be fine work to be sure you get it right. Nev. -
Hi and welcome to both of you to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Firstly Coronaadvances, can you please start a thread of your own as your problem is quite likely to be entirely different to this one, thanks. Stgall. I am afraid your problem sounds a lot too much like a failed hard drive, but I must also ask you where did you download the copy of Windows 7 from please? Nev.

Hi again, OK I understand now and think that MSN actually may have closed your account. Have any friends you communicate with via MSN complained about E Mail supposedly sent from you but actually not? I can only suggest you write to MSN and ask for details. There has been a lot of accounts hacked with the hacker then using the hacked account to send spam E Mails. when MSN are notified this is happening they close the hacked account. They may have done this with you if a hacker got access to your password. Nev.

USB through a NES controller port
Plastic Nev replied to KeNnO's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Re reading this after finding out you are trying to convert an old Nintendo case, and I am puzzled about why you want to use these older ports, the motherboard you have is set up for USB and so also is the controllers, why not stick to USB? Just set the motherboard up and fix it in such a way that you can get at and use the USB ports mounted on the motherboard. OK it may mean cutting a slot in the case perhaps, but that is simpler than the very small soldering of connections is going to be. Not to mention the risk of getting wires crossed and causing damage. Nev. -
Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I assume it was working OK till you changed the password, is that correct? If so, are you absolutely sure of the new password and that it was put into the new password box correctly? Also that you are using that exact same password now? After that, the only other recourse is to get in touch with MSN and ask for it to be sorted out from there, as we cannot go much further in advice regarding passwords. Nev.

USB through a NES controller port
Plastic Nev replied to KeNnO's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I should think that the real issues will be the type of data, I know little about NES, but USB data will no doubt be a lot different so the system may not work at all. Add to that, there is a powerful 5 volts DC voltage present on USB connections from the motherboard that your NES equipment may not be able to handle and could fry it. Nev. -
Hi a quick look at specifications shows that the Acer is 64bit with Windows 7 installed. Have a look here at the specification= http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/acer-aspire-5750g-956703/review However be careful with the Asus, although from what I can find it is capable of running Windows 7 64bit, it may not have it installed and only has a DOS system on it. Have a look here regarding the specification.= http://www.asus.ee/en/product/87617 In all though with both being capable of running 64bit operating systems, if they are installed then the 8GB of RAM is OK. Hi, I moved this to here to save people getting confused with two threads on the same subject. Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. First can you be a little more descriptive of the sound you heard, secondly, how far into the start sequence does it go before going off again, in other words does it get far enough to show something on screen? If so what does it show? Next but not last, please tell us all you know about the computer, make and model, ETC. Nev.

replacement laptop advice
Plastic Nev replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Acer can be a bit poor in their technical support but in general not too bad a machine, though one review I have looked at suggested the processor was a bit slow, but if not used for high intensity stuff such as games then it shouldn't be a problem. Nev. -
replacement laptop advice
Plastic Nev replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, a lot actually depends on what it is intended to be used for. Considering the biggest majority use these small machines for not much more than surfing and E Mails then any low priced machine is OK. However if games are needed, that really puts things up and quite a lot, depending on the level of games required. Refurbished machines can be OK, but do pay attention to any warranty and how long it is for, as in some cases there isn't very much given. Say three months is one I have seen, so watch out for that. Always go for a full twelve months cover, especially being a refurbished machine. As for make? well go by your own instincts and knowledge, though I believe Asus, being a major motherboard manufacturer, have a good reputation. Let us know a bit more about the intended use, and we may be able to offer more advice regarding the more nitty gritty stuff such as processor, RAM, Hard drive, ETC. Nev. -
Quite often MS are OK about that sort of thing providing it is as a repair operation, and will gladly sort out key's for you in those circumstances. As to what you want to do, if it can be called a repair, I will leave you to call MS about it if needed, best of luck. Nev.

Swapping hard drives around shouldn't cause any physical damage providing it is done with care of course. In this instance it may not work, and because of copyright laws may not be legal either. I have to be careful and point that out, and cannot help in any way regarding something that may be a breach of copyrights, hope you understand. Nev.

Hi, I am not too sure about the legalities of that, even if it works. The operating system on your computer will no doubt be an OEM install. That means that legally it is tied to that computer and not transferable. Moving the hard drive into another computer, complete with an operating system is a transfer you see. Also there is the difference of processors, plus Dell quite often made changes to their motherboards, even in the same model, that may mean the Windows operating system may see the processor and associated motherboard as a different environment and refuse to boot any way. Nev.

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I am not sure what you mean by "A simple jack from the sub to the jack on my PC" Do you mean a connection from the line out from PC to line in on the external sound card? Or do you mean the USB to USB connection? If it is the first, then I don't think you will get full outputs front and back. If however it is the latter and you are using the provided USB to USB mini cable, you should get the full sound provided that both the computer and the computers sound card recognise the device is plugged in. Have a look in "Computer" from the start menu and see if it shows up there. Have you looked at the set up in the sounds on your computer while the external card is plugged in via the USB lead? Just go to "Control Panel" and the main Windows sound system should be there, also I see from the specs for the computer it has Intel HD, or the optional Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD. Whichever is there should also have its own controls within the control panel. What are you seeing there please. Nev.

I agree with Ken here, please obtain the correct cable and connect to the router with that, and do the speed tests again, both morning and evening as that will tell us if there is a wireless problem or not. Nev.

Hi, Sorry to barge in like this guys, but indeed this also may be an overall connection problem regarding the service you are using. I am on a fairly slow service and do see slowness on Youtube or other large downloads at certain times of day. Can you explain a little more about the Youtube problem you are seeing please, for example does the picture and sound stop for a short time, then continue? do you see any small swirling circle on the frozen or stopped picture? If yes to any of the above, which company is your Internet service provider, and if not cable based, but one on the existing telephone line, roughly how far from the exchange are you? Also what connection speed are you promised or paying for? Have you ever done a connection speed test? If not try this and let us know the result you get in the mornings and also the result in the afternoon. Click on this link= http://www.speedtest.net/ Once it has opened, do not click anything other than the green, "Begin Test". Anything else is an advert hoping you may buy some product or other. Let us know the results of the test, Ping, download, and Upload, both once you have the cable as mentioned above, but also with the existing connection which I assume is wireless. Nev.

[Solved] something stopping this computer operating
Plastic Nev replied to mij's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Being in this position I try a tremendous amount of different freeware programs, just to verify they are OK or not for the purpose so advise can be given when needed. I always use Revo to uninstall them afterwards Jim, it certainly is a cracking tool which does leave the drive a lot cleaner of junk than the ordinary Windows uninstaller. Nev. -
Cant log in via Peppermint
Plastic Nev replied to truedol's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
To add a little. It is Linux and one of the many free versions available. All Linux operating systems are free to download, install, and use. As is the case with all Linux that I have tried, you must use a password to start it up which your friend must have put into it and therefore only your friend knows it. As stated by Ken, we cannot help any more with password issues, sorry about that. Once you have resolved that issue though, don't hesitate to ask for further help if needed. Nev. -
[Solved] something stopping this computer operating
Plastic Nev replied to mij's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Jim, I have already seen that Starbuck has taken this up. Go along with him first, I think Revo as suggested may do the job, if not, Starbuck will be able to give the right fixes for removing the rubbish. Then do install a decent antivirus. Hopefully that should sort it out. Nev.
