  1. Last night (02/14/2013) I installed a set of 11 updates (one optional, the rest important), and upon restarting my machine, after the boot-logo, my computer screen just began flashing from black to grey (when grey, I could see my cursor, could move it, but couldn't do anything else).....It did that for almost an hour before I finally managed to load System Restore by inserting my bought Windows 8 Pro x64 disc. Not only did this happen to my desktop pc (an HP Pavillion p6620f), but it also happened exactly the same on my wife's laptop when I updated it with the same updates later last night. Her laptop in an HP Pavillion g7-1310us Notebook pc. Needless to say, I again had to do a System Restore on her lappy too. ********************************************************* The updates that I had downloaded for both computers on 02/14/2013 are as follows: Important: 1) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2792100) 2) Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2797052) 3) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 for x64-based Systems (KB2789650) 4) Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 for x64-based Systems (KB2789649) 5) Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2778344) 6)Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2790655) 7) Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2799494) 8) Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2805940) 9) Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2795944) 10) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 x64-based Systems - February 2013 (KB890830) optional: 11) Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2793210) ********************************************************* I would really like someone to be able to help me with this. I bought Windows 8 Pro for my computer, my wife's laptop, and also 3 other copies for my father-in-law's machines....and now I've had to disable Windows Updates for all of them because of this! All of our computers are HP, maybe that has something to do with it? I don't know. Or perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the machines didn't originally come with Win8 pre-installed (like I said above, I bought the discs at retail---5 of them). I really enjoy using Windows 8, and don't want to have to downgrade to Win7 after all my hard work and spent $$$. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE ASAP!!!! View this thread

  4. I have previously posted, this question: I did have an answer thank you, with my basic knowledge, I think that I must have pressed the tick box as though I had succeeded, in fact I failed. I tried eskimo3 question(asked on 02/02/2013) and followed instruction fully with Microsoft Hot Fix. I was able to locate for first time 91 updates only up to 16/06/2012 once the computer is switched off these disappear, and the process has to be undertaken again. When the updates are being installed, there is no indication on the progress bar, only after approx 20 minutes saying completed.Another contributor raised a question: mMahale on 01/07/2012 and support engineer, Vinjin V set out three methods for this contributor to try.Run the SFC ( System File Checker ) I had the message Windows Resource Protection could not start repair service. I asked my daughter to try the other methods 2&3 as I am not confident enough, several times she tried the command prompts but on each occasion it was not recognized. I tried the Debug method and noted that File in Notepad, msert was missing. I have tried at least 5 types Microsoft Mr Fixit, these report Fixes have been completed, only this is not the case. I have checked automatic update is on; I have been the Administrator, I had someone turn off the Spyware/Virus as instructed previously. I can say by now I would have given up, I think what gives me determination to succeed is that as I only have a very basic understanding of computers that I persevere. I am hoping that someone can assist with an answer.Thank you Ian View this thread
  5. Hello everyone, I'm unsure about whether MSE is fully protecting me as it should be, can someone please shine a bit of light please? Right now, there are no messages saying that I need to turn on MSE, install an AV etc. My PC is acting completely normal atm. Thankyou, Terish. View this thread
  6. I can't install the update "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2792100)". Windows Update ends with error code 80070246. Some other updates succeeded. I had other problems last week, which I finally tracked down to bad expansion RAM, which I then removed. That removed the problems I was having at that time. But now, a week later, I'm seeig this problem with Windows Update, which may or may not be a consequence of some damage that was inflicted by the earlier RAM problem. Before I discovered that RAM was the cause of the problems I was seeing at that time, I also restored a previous System Restore Point for an update that was being installed at that time the RAM problem started. Now I was planning to go back to an earlier System Restore Point before the RAM problem, to see if that would fix Windows Update. But now there are no restore points old enough for that remaining. I've searched this forum and read previous answers about code 80070246, but the ones I've been able to try so far haven't helped. I ran the tools in the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 . The problem still remains. Some answers refer to a GlobalInstallorder.xml in a specific directory in WindowsWinsxs, but those answers seem to pertain to Windows Vista. The directory mentioned does not exist. Other similar directories with that file do exist, but the file GlobalInstallorder.xml is the same in several of them, so there doesn't seem to be any random damage to only one of them to try fixing. Some answers say install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) to be able to replace some Winsxs files. I haven't been able to download that yet, since I'm on a slow Internet connection and the download is big. And I haven't found out which files to replace, anyway. I wish Windows Update would tell me which file the error code refers too... I tried the System Update Readiness Tool. The log file windowsLogsCBSCheckSUR.log mentions "Found 30 errors", "Fixed 11 errors". I don't know if that means there are remaining errors that still need fixing? And I don't know what to do about the issues logged anyway. The log ends with: CSI Manifest and S256H Do Not Match Total count: 1 CSI Missing Pinned Component Key Total count: 5 Fixed: CSI Missing Pinned Component Key. 12. Hello everyone, so I was looking at my Windows Update history, and I saw an important update. So I viewed it and it said it was a MSE 'Important' update. Usually in the update history it was optional. So I installed it, now I'm beginning to worry about it because checking the history. There are no other MSE updates stated as 'Important'. Can someone clarify whether this update was fake? or not. The MSE important update: Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB28804527 (4.2.223.1). Also, when I goto the shutdown button. It has the shield with the ! mark on it. But I dont have any other important updates to be installed. Thankyou, Terish. View this thread
